View Full Version : Buddy can you spare some vibes? update post 22

Some of you may know we have gotten hit hard with an ice storm in central KY. I've been without power for three days. It's supposed to get pretty cold tonight so I dutifully left a little water running but I reluctantly left four of my cats in the house. The three boys get along and should be able to keep each other warm. I'm a little concerned about the female. She burrows under a throw on the chair so I put an extra blanket over where she goes and I'm hoping for the best. I'm living at my office with the dogs (so I can take them potty). I brought her last night but she was trying to scratch the furniture. Vet suggested carrier but she's a female flame point Siamese and would probably keep the entire building awake in the carrier. I hope I've not made a major mistake with the running water and with the cat. :(
Now the really major vibes. One of my other cats (my little love) is in the hospital. He's 6 1/2 and has been diagnosed with diabetes. They are trying to get him stabilized but it's touch and go. Doesn't help that the vet clinic hasn't had power.
My coming 6 yo was put on muscle relaxers to see if that helps her reluctance to trot. (we're thinking maybe sore back). After spending $$ for the meds, there is no way I can get on her to see if it's made a difference. Her coming 5 yo sister has a lumpy knee. I had it x-rayed last week and there is no damage to the knee so we are waiting to see if the lump goes down.
I haven't had a shower in 3 days (whew) and am trying to reach a friend that has power with no luck so far. I'm living in my office. I've lost $$$ in food and I'm heart broken over my kitty. Can you please spare some jingles? Ironically, last year this week a tree fell on my house and my roof needed to be replaced. I'm kind of at my wits and my $$ end.

More Jingles from Florida! I think it might be worse to have no power in the winter, than what we go through down here in hurricane season.
Hope your luck changes for the better soon!

Many, many jingles and prayers. Gives new meaning to never raining but pouring.
First of all, your kitties will be FINE. I promise. They have loffly fur coats and will curl up together or in a blanket or whatever. They WILL be fine. Truly.
During the Ice Storm of '98 I had a broken leg/fractured ankle. Which was healing well--but I had a solid cast, and would slip on the ice and fall. A lot.
I had a few tantrums. One major meltdown. I'll tell the story sometime about the horses getting stuck out on the ice in the middle of the pasture.
The things like a hot shower become luxuries you'd sell your soul for.
The stress is way over the top, and it doesn't help one bit that you've got issues with your pony too.
You WILL make it. It sucks. It definitely falls into the 'what doesn't kill me makes me stronger' category. You will cry, you might cuss out someone whether it's deserved or not. It WILL pass. I promise.
((((hugs))))

I was hoping that 2009 would be a better year for everyone than was 2008, but this year has started off badly for everyone.
Hang it there. Hard to believe, but others have it worse than you do.
The diabetes kitty hopefully can be stablized and you can give the daily shots, you just have to monitor his food, etc.
And maybe if everyone just hangs on, things will get better later this year.

Ice-Cold Hoosier Jingles!!!!
& what PintoPiaffe said ;)
Don't stress about your kittys at home.
As long as they have that trickle of water and a warm place to huddle together they'll deal.
Sounds like your vet clinic is doing their best for your diabetic cat, so leave that in their hands for now.
Wonderful that you can bring your dogs to work - one Asshat I worked for would have smugly forbade me that little favor.
Your ponies will have to do without you (are they boarded?) for the time being, until the crisis at home gets some releif
Badback pony will not be better or worse until you can see if the meds worked and lumpyknee will hopefully heal up w/o complication.
In the meantime take a deep breath and do what we all have to do sometimes:

Beloved kitty still not eating. Purrs like mad when I'm there though and cries when I leave. Heartbreaking. Even with 9 other animals, it feels very lonely with him not there.
Horses seem to be doing perfectly fine in this weather. I'm feeding them twice a day but some days that's only a few hours apart. They are used to a not too regimented schedule so don't seem to care. It was a little warmer to today and a couple of them were feeling their oats.
So far so good on the kitties at home. If it's sunny tomorrow, I'll leave the door to the sunroom open. That will give them some great warmth.
No power yet but I'm not surprised. Oh, and 2dogsfarm, I haven't told my boss I'm bringing my dogs to work. ;)
Thanks everyone! Please send specific Nusie eating vibes!

Nusie, EAT darn it, your Mum is STRESSED. And I know you can tell she' stressed, but you need to EAT. That will HELP her feel *better* Nusie. Perhaps you are thinking you need to be worried since she is worried. That's not the case. If you can just relax a little, eat some... that will help your Mum.

No power yet and no sign of power trucks in our area. I don't begrudge them that as I know they are working around the clock. It was 8 degrees last night so house was a might chilly. Knock wood, pipes still running (I'm leaving a constant flow). Cat on the sun porch was not happy but seems to be doing fine. Cats in the house were playing. I left the sunporch door open as the sun has come out and the cats can bask in it.
Horses are fine. Were out grazing when I got there. Water will freeze up fast today so I'm making another trip out tonight.
Kitty in the hospital still not eating. His blood glucose level is now normal. They are concerned some internal function may be shutting down. Doing another blood test and if results good enough will give him an appetite stimulus shot that takes 24 - 48 hours to work. Not sure why that hasn't already been done unless it interfers with the medication. He spent 2 hours in my lap this morning. He watched the staff sweep the kennel, purred, and fussed at me when I put him away. If he looked to be in pain and just laying there, I'd have called it by now but he's alert, just not eating or moving around much. He doesn't seem to be having trouble sleeping but I am.
Heading to the gym for a REAL showed in a few minutes. Hope I can get in! Then I'm going to work on my taxes as I'll need my refund to pay the vet bill.

We put Nusie to sleep at 3:00 this afternoon. His kidney test was off the chart. Might have tried an appetite stimulant but it was a long shot and I felt he’d had enough. The vet that had been working with him was not on call but left volunteering at a shelter to come over and do it. Before he came, we put Nusie on his favorite blanket on my lap and there he stayed until he was gone. He purred for a bit while we waited for the vet. I’ve put up a tribute on my website:

Thanks Honu and Shea's Mom. And yes, Shea's Mom, can I come live with you? I used to live in Boone. Can I bring the other four cats, two dogs, and three horses? I really could use a change in scenery and routine here.
