Lost my beautiful Roo and her unborn foal tonight

She was fine when I left for work this morning --left everyone in the barn because of the ice. When my helper arrived just before noon, she found Roo down in her stall and couldn't get her up. Vet came, recommended taking her to the local equine hospital. Long heartbreaking story short, they found a puzzle they couldn't solve, but my beautiful sweet girl was very, very sick. She went down hill so quickly and I can hardly believe she's gone. She was eight months pregnant. I am heartsick, I loved her so. This was to be her last foal and then a well-deserved retirement. She's not in pain any longer and I know in my head I did the right thing, but my heart isn't there yet.

Gosh, I don't even know what to say. I am so so sorry for the loss of your loved mare and her little one. At least you know she didn't suffer and if this had to happen, she was in her warm stall instead of the cold icy paddock. Godspeed, Roo and baby!

There just aren't any words that will suffice. I have had this happen before with a mare that we bred and it still hurts. Our mare's last foal is now 4 and we treasure her so much.

I know it probably won't offer much comfort, but.. I'll tell you what I tell myself every time I imagine what it's going to feel like when one of my pets (horses or cats) finally passes - I will tell myself that at least I offered a lifetime of wonderful care and affection. There are lots of horses out there who have never known the feeling of a cozy stall and soft bedding, the feel of a gentle touch and the taste of a yummy carrot...

Just take solace in the fact that you made her happy and comfortable until her passing. She was as lucky to have you as you were to have her.
