View Full Version : Popeye K foal temperment??? Out of hot mares???

Hey all,

I have a mare that I am looking into breeding this year, who is very hot though very talented.

She compliments Popeye K in everyway, but I am unsure what his foals temperments come out like.

The ones that I have met, have all been very kind, and not the hot type *(though I never met their dams).. BUT, being that the mare is hotter, does he tend to quiet them down any?

Any ideas?

I don't think you'd have a problem with the resulting foal....most Popeye's are a bit too laid back...

I've been around 7 closely, two of which were entire, and they've all been dead quiet and unspooky. Popeye himself is one of the easiest, quietest horses I've ever been around, regardless of gender. I'd be very surprised if the foal was at all hot, regardless of the temperament of the mare.

The two Popeye foals I had last year , Pop Quiz and Pin Up, are both back with me now to get ready for show season. They were body clipped yesterday ( they were the fuzziest babies I have ever seen. Pelts not just fur)
I was so impressed with how quietly they stood for the clipping. They are both about 7 mos old. No twitch, no drugs. Just stood there. The colt got a little tickilish when he had the insides of the hinds done but other than that they were awesome.
Easy, easy babies.

I have a filly by Popeye, she is 8 months old and out of a TB mare, she is the sweetest thing you have ever seen!
She will lick your face off if you let her, she is a quick learner and was reserve best young horse at her second horse show last week! Against 2 yr olds!! She's very fancy said Jimmy Wofford.

So is he producing offspring that can do the 4ft working hunters? What are his best qualities and worst qualities?

He is big (17+h), substantial, he has great hunter movement (very), and has superb bloodlines.. Not to mention his fabulous jump, and obvious brains!

Worst qualities in my book-- Little heavy on the front end, and his neck is a bit lower than I want. No other bad qualities (that have popped out at me)..

The mare I have chosen for him has a TON of suspension, and stride. Great refined neck, and very light on the front end. She also has a great rear end, which will help lighten his step and be more rounded with more spring and drive.

She has a great jump as well, so I am hoping for top jumping ability. I definitely expect 4'+.

I dont know if it is really that his neck is lower set, or just because he is a stallion, it is quite thick..

Sundown Farm - would you mind sharing the pedigree of your mare with me? Jazz has never come to my mind in conjunction with anything hunter or jumper related and I'm curious to see what in your mare's background changes that .....

I have a boarder who has a 5 year old popeye K mare who is out of a TB mare. THe horse is reliable, calm, and stunning. Interestingly, she's built very uphill with a TON of suspension. I had always assumed that was from her dad!

Thanks! She has been lovely to handle and ride, and I am very excited about her.

What are his best qualities and worst qualities?

Popeye's best qualities, in my opinion, start with the fact that he takes almost no prep to get to the ring, and is extremely easy to handle. To the point where I would say he was the easiest horse to handle, in all respects, in the entire barn. Never required a second thought. He also has a great round jump, a lot of scope, is very careful, and has a lot of step. Very good legs and feet, great back, great canter, great shoulder.

The only weak points I think he has is that his neck is just a hair short, so I wouldn't expect him to improve a neck. (I personally don't find it set low, however.) He has a "masculine" head that fits him perfectly, but he's not going to improve a head either. Also, his trot is athletic, not showy, which puts him low-hack-ribbon average in top company. He will produce good movers, but probably few real hack winners.

I have bred my tb mare 3 times to Popeye and both offspring (one is on the way :)) are sensible, easy to work with and have wonderful attitudes.

I can't say enough about my mare Nyla .....she is my dream mare...she is like an old soul in a young mares body. She is my future Adult/Ammy horse....I know she will take care of me and do it in style. She has hack winning movement and I have been told by a few dressage trainers we should show her in the dressage ring as well.

I am praying the next one is another keeper filly.

Her coming 6 year old brother Relevant has the scope and talent to to do the 4 foot hunter's if you ask me......
His owners have decided to go the jumper route with him right now because of his huge scope. They plan on doing level 4 and 5 this year in the jumpers and go up from there. He has a huge heart and wants to please....he really loves his job.

Not a great shot...a bit blurry...my camera did not want to work in the cold indoor arena but this was Relevant schooling last week..... http://inlinethumb07.webshots.com/42886/2351878510075568778S500x500Q85.jpg

"she is my dream mare...she is like an old soul in a young mares body."

I got to see Popeye K on a trip East. As some know, I am a face swirl-as-indicator-of-mentality devotee. Popeye K's swirl says exactly who he is: a naturally quiet and self-assured horse who owns the space he is in. His swirl is fairly simple (uncomplicated horse) and low enough to indicate a quiet nature, but the amazing thing is how far toward the left - self-assured direction - it is. I have never seen a swirl quite that far to the left (facing the horse).

I take big stock of swirls in stallions. Training can affect the impresssion the horse gives out, but the swirl indicates what is in that brain naturally and what will be reproduced.

I think he might be a good fit for my mare as well - I do have a breeding this year still to More Than Luck but Popeye K could be a good one for 2010.

I hope so too.

This may not be a popul;ar sentiment on here, but for me, the fact that he is only available frozen is a negative factor.

I think he really is only available with frozen, and from what I heard it was GREAT...he's mainly a show horse for an ammy, so I don't think he'll be available anytime soon with fresh. With the oxytocin protocol available and with the success rate of his frozen, I don't think its too hard to use...far less last-minute fire-drill to get the semen...

His frozen semen is fantastic. Not sure why his owner would feel the need to ship fresh semen.

My mare was fresh off the track, last race 1/15 confirmed preggo May 22.
First and only one straw. Vet said no way will she take but she did.
I'd say that unbelievable for frozen.

Well, the biggest reason why I would prefer fresh, is that my vet who does a great job with fresh can come to my farm...

To do frozen I have to drive 100 miles to the repro clinic with another vet.. And it is around $400 more minimum. I tried frozen last year (not with Popeye) on two mares, and all the straws were destroyed when they arrived (cracked from shipping)... Could scarcely put together a straw per mare per day (over two days)..

They definitely did not take, because we could not be sure that no water seeped in the straws durring thawing even though we snatched them out AS soon as the sound of the pressure released through thawing..

Its not always the semen itself that worries me, its EVERYTHING involved.

I will be freezing some of my boys in the near future, so I am not completely against it... Just a bit harder at times!

I don't quite understand why you have Popeye K on your short list if you are not comfortable using frozen semen. There are plenty of stallions available fresh cooled.

If you are having that much problem with frozen I would only be looking at fresh semen stallions.

With Popeye having a LFG...if there was ever a problem with straws being broken....Select Breeders (where Popeye semen is stored and handled) and Popeye's owner I am sure would take care of you. There goal is for you to have a foal on the ground and there service up to date has been fabulous.
