My young horse is now 15.2hh at 17 months old, any idea how tall he will be?
His dam was about 17.2, sire about 16.2hh. He is a Trakehner if that helps :)

Between 16.2 and 17.2......
seriously though...I would take a stab at ~16.3 since my 15.1H 07 colt should mature at about 16.2.......

Measure from the middle of the knee to the cornet band. If it comes out 16 1/4 inches then bet he will be around 16.1....That is how you do the string test...:)

I once owned a 17HH3 horse that was 16HH0 at 18 months, dam was 16HH3 and sire, 16HH0.

Hi, thanks for the replies!
No I havent string tested him yet, but I thought it was from the elbow to the fetlock??
If I measure from middle of the knee to coronet, do I follow the line of the leg, or just pull the tape straight?
I"m actually afraid he won't be tall enough for me, I'm 5"11, but you guys seems to think he'll still grow quite a bit?

pull taut
another gross rule of thumb is to add a hand to the 24 month height/2 hands to the yearling height

My horse has ended up being 17 hands out of a 16 hmare and by a 16.1h stallion. At 20 months he was 15.2 hands.

I have one who is about 16.2 now as a 20 month old. Sire 17.1-2, Dam, a 'stunted' 17 hands. I am not sure how big this bay will get... but he just wont stop growing. Everyone thinks I am lying when I say he wont be 2 till the end of April. See for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bp7PKpuj2cA (the girl in the video is 5'6"). I am scared at the string test as it says 17.3 hands. Could that even be???

Pull the measuring tape straight from coronet to the middle of the knee. You should know that sometimes this will be off if the horse has a shorter or longer than average cannon bone. Another good estimate is the one already mentioned. Add 2 hh to their height at 12 months or 1hh to their height at 24 months.
If your horse was 15.2hh at 17 months I don't think you will have any problem at all with this horse being tall enough for you at maturity.

I string tested mine from her elbow to her fetlock, I know there are a couple methods.

The adding a hand at 24 months seems like it is going to work for my Arab. He was 14.3h, and now at 32 months he is 15.1 1/2. He string tested at about 15.3h too as a long yearling.
And no, I don't have the magic Arab measuring stick. His mom was 15.3h, but dad was 14.3h. Full sister is *barely* 15h. I measured him today right after I trimmed his hooves.

I have an 18mo holsteiner who's 15.1h right now and string tests to 16.2h (out of a 16.2h mare and by a 16.2h stallion).

I've got a 9month old Georgian Grande filly who was "sticked" by the vet at 8 months of age at 14.3hh (a little highter at the butt). Now at 9 months she is 15hh. She is out of a 15.2hh mare, and by a 16.1 hh stallion. When I did the string test on her at 6 months of age it showed 17.2hh I kind of laughed it off, but now I'm starting to think that it just might be the case. Does the string test work at "any age"??????? Or is there are certain time frame inwhich it is accurate?????
