Hi all. i *think* I finally have my stallions picked for the ladies this year....all except ONE!

This mare is a lovely, lovely girl who we just added to the program. By Castle Cove, out of an Aristos B mare. She is a touch on the small side (just under 16hh). She is an outstanding jumper who has also gotten some great hack prizes in good company. Beautiful head and neck, and well put together.

I am breeding this one for myself; hopefully something that can stand on the line then go onto the AA ring. I would like to keep her amateur friendly mind. I would like a stallion who is on the taller side who is quite typey. Solid jump and movement of course.

As this one will be for me, I would consider a younger stallion or one who is not the "stallion du jour". I need a special boy though, because I LOVE this mare and don't want to breed down.

I am waiting on her photos from WEF, but a few are available from the mares page at www.elitehuntersales.com, under Castle Bay.

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

How about this stallion. He certainly look like he produces what you are looking for.

Thanks for the suggestions thus far. Just the Best is on the top of my list, despite the fact that he is a smaller stallion.

I don't know Acord III well - does he have a lot of hunter offspring?

I also worry about the size factor with Escudo II, Chaleon and Cabardino. All lovely boys though.

I like Lotus T but just too much knee for my tastes.

What about Corlando? He is only frozen now but he is lovely.

I would breed that one to Popeye. You need the height and the mind, and, while the Aristos B blood probably gave some scope to the Castle Cove, I would be very careful that you don't breed it out with something limited.

Have you thought about Autocrat? A filly of his came second in the GG Cup this year and although he himself is aimed at the dressage ring I think depending on who he is bred to be can also produce hunter types. He is very modern and typey and 16.3 hands. I have used him twice, on a mare that was more of a dressage/ jumper type and ended up with one that was very similar to mare although he did improve her in the ways I wanted him to and the second is a capital H Hunter.

Beste Gold or Westporte would be considerations for this mare.

Beste Gold's niche is 'keepers" for AA or AO owners. His first offspring to hit the big show arena will be at WEF this winter. Her name is Capri and she will be shown by Julianna Starbuck ( Stepping Stone Farm). He has several others starting out as "first young prospects" for their owners that will be shown next year.

You might want to look at Ironman or his son, Ironrule.

I am going to say Everest. HunterRider who posts here has a LOVELY 4 year old by him. Everest embodies all that you seem to want, mind, disposition, will add height, refinement, knock out movement and has a solid jump. Also, Everest's rider sometimes posts here as well, I believe under MakeMeLaugh. I will send you a pm with his picture. The downside is that he doesn't have a website.

I also have to say that I have a filly by Le Mode, and he has a knock out jump and seems to pass along wonderful movement. My filly is 3 this year and I put her on the line last year in the HB and she did very well. Though Le Mode himself isn't very tall (16.1) he added a good deal of height onto my filly's dam. My filly string tests to be 16.1 1/2 and is currently 15.3 her dam wasn't quite 15.2. Le Mode definitely has some tall babies out there - not sure of all the mare height to be fair. My filly is super easy and brave, she was my first baby and my trainer and my handler have both commented on what a good brain she has.

Check out Le Mode and his offspring at www.SolomonFarm.com

If you contact Ann tell her that Lorelei's Mom sent you! There are pics of my filly in my webshots, the link is in my sig if you are interested.

Good luck!

Great choice. I have a mare that will be foaling a Just The Best in April. He is throwing height according to Tish, so that should put your mind at ease! Good Luck!

I don't know that I would worry about size with Cabardino. My friend has bred her very refined (no bone or body) 16.1 h TB mare to Balta' Czar, Just the Best, Rio Grande, and Cabardino. The Rio Grande is by far the tallest (already 17.0 h at 2 years), but the Cabardino is the biggest boned and bodied and should mature around 16.2 to 16.3 h. The Just the Best filly is coming 4 years old and will finish under 16.0 h. She is very refined. The Balta' Czar is also very refined and is right at 16.0 h. All of them are very nice hunter types.

I forgot we have some Corlando in the tank that we are not yet planning to use this year.

I figure he would keep or even improve the jump, and she moves very well.

Any thoughts? For some reason I need support on this decision! :)

Anyone have an opinion on Corlando????

I also have Alla'czar in the tank that might work for her. I am also talking to Rachel about doing another Popeye breeding. I can't decide!

Neighland has a pretty Corlando filly, Chimera who is an '06. You may want to ask her? NBFarm has 2 Alla'czar's including an up and coming stallion, Legaczy. He is also an '06 model who is having his first baby come in a month. You actually may want to take a peek at him, he is going to be special - he was Zone 3, VHSA & MHSA champion on the line. Chimera, Legaczy and my At Last (by Le Mode) all showed on the HB circuit last year as 2 year olds, all did well too.

Have you looked at Landfriese II?

I have a 2 year old Corlando gelding. He is very correct in structure and movement, kind, easy going guy out of a very nice Thoroughbred mare. His gaits are lovely -- he could be a dressage horse -- very cadenced, elastic trot and canter to die for. He is attractive (well, maybe not right now in his winter woolies and growing stages...). Very nice type -- I'm sure he could jump well, just haven't asked him -- although he has hopped over logs and a ditch in his field in stride. If you have it in the tank it might be the way to go considering the scores Corlando received on his jumping technique.
