Sorry. Title too long. I'm looking at this book:

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Equine-Breeding-Management-and-Artificial-Insemination/Juan-C-Samper/e/9781416052340/?itm=1

But it is expensive enough that I wanted to see if anyone has read it or if you have another book you would recommend. I'm looking for current and in-depth information though.

I would love to attend the equine repo seminars mentioned, but I doubt they get to my neck of the woods!

I bought that book last month and have only had time to scan it. As a mare owner, I have found "Equine Reproduction" by Samper, McKinnon, and Pycock to be an invaluable resource, so I was eager to get the latest version from Dr. Samper. I love books and that is the first one I turn to when I have questions. I would also highly recommend "Color Atlas of Diseases and Disorders of the Foal".

Juan Samper was quite an expert and the publication date is recent, so that might be a good purchase. Ditto Tuckaway on the McKinnon tome. It is very detailed.

I highly recommend attending one of Equine-Reproductio.com's seminars. The class notes alone are worth the price of attending and the info is cutting edge.

I suspect the book Tuckaway is referencing is the recent one that the trio did. It's NOT the huge "tome" that you are referencing, Mary Lou, which "is" the book we usually suggest breeders get and keep as a reference. That one is McKinnon & Voss' Equine Reproduction - we pretty much consider that one the "bible" of horse breeding, but definitely NOT light reading. The more recent one, I believe was published in 2007 and is quite good, as well, but isn't as broad in its coverage as the McKinnon and Voss book.

And Trot, we have a course next weekend in Illinois. Don't know if that helps you, but at least an option.

Hope that helps!

Kathy, I'm glad you posted, I was hoping you would!

IL is still a good day's drive...you should hit Minneapolis/St. Paul. I could do that...why that's a great idea. You can just schedule for my convenience...lol.

Only a day???? Quit whining! <lol>. We'll be coming from Maryland to do that course. But, Rebecca/Sonesta is correct in that we are probably going to be cutting wayyyy back on the courses we'll be doing. We'll probably still do the three day courses at some of the universities, but will be doing fewer of the two day courses.

You make me laugh. That's really two days driving plus the learning part. I'm holding out for Minneapolis....come on...

I've have Samper's book and really enjoyed it (very informative) however, I must warn that it is very technical and may have a bit more detail than what some people are looking for. Perhaps more so than most people are looking for.

<smile>...Probably isn't going to happen. As noted, we're doing fewer courses, not more. Probably the next closest one will be in Arkansas next year.
