Nothing real horrible happening. This was almost 20 years ago.

LOL. The era of the pure synthesizer-freestyles...LOL.

Doesn't seem to have quite the strength or finesse of the other riders who bested her. The transitions especially the more difficult ones lack a lot of finesse and finished quality and the work after the difficult transitions lacks rhythm and suppleness especially the piaffers after the difficult transitions are muddled and irregular.

Obviously she did know how to get the horse to do the stuff. Unfortunately that isn't enough at that level.

Karin Rehbein is next on Nektar. Despite some mistakes, and one very naughty moment (that is handled very calmly), that pair looks more collected in the collected work, has more suspension, and just generally looks less stuck in the neck and better over the back, moves with a little more freedom and ease. And scored above Wels.

Also is a very young Michael Klimke on Entertainer, a horse some people say his father just could not work with. Compared to Wel's performance, this horse also looks better in the neck, despite having a difficult shape of neck, and has more free, supple look to him, despite not really looking like a very naturally easy to supple horse. Despite getting very fresh after the diagonal (which would have figured little in the score) he still scored far better than Wels did. He almost won the class.

I can see why she did not best the higher placed riders.

I guess that after years and years of not quite breaking through, and jealously watching others do so, year after year, some people get angry, and start taking it out on the horses, and just trying to get some money out of the horses and customers as quickly as they can. She may also have a drinking problem, she seems to have stated something about that at one point as an excuse for her behavior. Kind of sad. Now, at 60, Wels is persona non grata in several countries. Where to from here, Christina Wels?

I hate to open up a can of tangent, but what do you see that's different?

maybe we should take this to another thread? because the short answer is the manner in which the horse is working and carrying itself is so completely different (for the most part) than today.

What i did see in this video of Catherine Wels was that the most mistakes came from rider-errors.

That's what I thought.

That's what I thought.

And as the commentators (an international judge and Tineke Bartels) stated, she did so much stupid things in her freestyle which got the horse "off track and off focus" on movements that even don't get judgescores.

The making of ..........................

So she had a badly designed freestyle and a lot of rider mistakes (and I also thought the general way of going of the horse was deficient, ie more basic things). Is that an inevitable train track to being an animal abuser?

LOL watching her I just kept hearing that old saying, "No need to stare at his head, if it falls off you'll be first to know!"
