Ok so I had to make the title slightly "E!" related. I looked back several pages and haven't found anything officially called a fashion thread. I know last year we had one right before Thermal, so lets go! What are new looks, coat colors or not? Helmets, pet peeves, preferences etc...
I have pet peeves! Hairnets that don't partially cover a riders ears with hair covering it. Yes, I like it to a T. Or when riders just tuck the hairnet behind their ear. Sure, it's not required, nor is it necessary but that's how I like it.
Still not digging the blingy belts, sorry. I have about 12 and I'm waiting to like them again.

Friends in the retail business tell me the only color hunt coat that they can really sell down at the winter circuits is....tadatadatada.
BLACK. Juniors just have to have one to feel they belong;).
Not the hard solid black, the kind with the subtle colors worked thru to soften the look and make matching a shirt more fun.
So those past a certain age-get to the back of that closet and fish that thing out.

Does anyone know what the new 'polo shirt' for the season is? For example, few years ago it was Joules then Big Pony and now...

I have a black coat that I use as a back up, now I feel so trendy! I never can follow trends, I really don't even try, I just buy what I can afford/actually like. Around here though, CO Hamptons and GR8's are becoming so popular, it's really weird to see anyone wearing a GPA now.

I won't buy the ones with the "3" but I have several Joules that look very much like a regular Ralph Lauren polo except instead of the tiny polo player logo on the breast they have a small dog. I like the fabric, it has a tiny bit of stretch in it so they are very comfortable and fit well and the colors are very pretty. In general I try to avoid anything with a large noticeable logo so I really like these.

I do love that the CO is "in". Especially since they are so much less money than the GPA it's nice for those who can't afford the GPA to be able to afford an "in" helmet.
One thing I can't stand is blue charels owens, I'm sorry I just do not understand why one would purchase a blue helmet. And IRH's, I grew up wearing the traditional black/gunmetal IRH, it was tiny and cute. The new ones are clunky big and ugly. Plus I've just never been a fan of the immitator , however protection for your head is protection!
I can't lie, I love 3 on the Jouls shirts. I like the big pony more though. You know what I really dislike about the two brands though is they shrink from top to bottom so you look like you're wearing baby gap after a few washes.
I hope everyone is over ugg boots for their horses in the eq, those fluffy puffy sheepskin boots. I love the traditional rubber lined (or even lightly and I mean very lightly sheepskin lined).
Kingsland breeches! Ariat schooling breeches! Tailored sportsman show breeches will never grow old.

if someone wanted to ride with you, but their head simply did not fit into a gpa would you say "get out, I won't be you trainer"?

Flogarty, that's exactly what I was thinking!
I had a GPA for a while that fit so bad, one day it slipped over my eyes in the ring! When I got off the horse my trainer took me straight to the vendors and said "You need a helmet that fits before you get back on that horse". I came back with a CO, the only one that fit. In my zone most of the really pretty hunter/eq riders wear the CO now anyway. So it sounds ridiculous that someone would say GPAs only.

You only "allow" GPA's? What if a rider cannot afford a GPA, or they do not fit a riders head. With the economy the co is almost a lifesaver for those who want to wear what's "in" but still save. Why only GPA? Are you one of those trainers who has to tell your clients what to wear and how down to the type of hairnet.
I'm describing myself here, but I've had to back off a lot realizing that with the economy the way that it is sometimes my favorite or my preference is not the riders. Maybe personally and financially. Don't let me forget to mention that it's just plain STUPID for a trainer to dictate what their riders wear. I understand suggestions, I always suggest my riders wear this and that when they are preparing to show, but good Lord! Let me know if you have any charels owen riders, ide gladly welcome them to our multi-helmetural family.

I usually just lurk on here, but I think this statement is so ignorant that I had to comment. As a trainer myself, an important part of my job is to make sure that each and every one of my students has a properly fitting nice helmet. As heads are shaped differently, helmets fit people differently also and what works for one may not work for another.
Unfortunate as it may be, this is a lawsuit driven society, and you are opening yourself up for issues if you really inforce such a stupid rule...

$600 and up. They are still waiting on SEI approval, last I heard. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Antares saddle but couldn't see spending that much on a helmet. I recently bought a CO Hampton and I really like the way it fits, the price was more reasonable, and it is the closest thing to classic looking in the approved helmets.

From what I can see at the tack-stores and show-reports from my friends, it looks like it's going to be a very "back to basics" kind of year on the West coast. The light-colored coats are fewer in number, but there's a TON of people rocking various kinds of navy - herringbones, bold pinstripes, minimal pinstripes etc. Some black as well, but not a true-black-black, subtle windowpaning etc. More actual beige than puke-colored TS and even some brave souls in grey/silver breeches (looks DELIGHTFUL with a black coat).
Keeping my fingers crossed for MORE rust and for this to finally be the year that the shad-fad dies. Rock the stock!

Gag! I think those helmets are hedious! You might as well own one of those GPA Gimpi helmets or whatever those lovely things are called. To me, the "custom" Antares helmet just screams "I'm trying so hard!". Nobody really needs a custom helmet with a big Antares logo on it. even more than if the head doesnt fit, what about rider's that cannot afford $500 bucks for a helmet that doesnt fit? there are so many options. that would be a huge turnoff if my soon to be trainer said you cannot train her unless you have a GPA.
i like the fact that other helmets that are almost half the price are coming in style. i think the GPA is way overpriced! sadly though, the other helmets do not fit my head. so i ride in a GPA. i just got a new one and i really wish i could fit the other helmets.

If the GPA fits on the sides of my head, I feel like there is a vice grip on my forehead. Not exactly conducive to actually thinking while riding, as my head is going boom boom boom. My trainer was big on them but I pretty much put my foot down and one of the IRH imitations on my head. One of the barn mothers couldn't figure out why her child had a large crease on her forehead after every show. Ah, GPA + oval head.
If the hat fits, wear it.

Yeahhhh, I have a feeling that Mr. IlikeGPA's is probably not a trainer. I have never seen a show barn with such a strict dress code. Any trainer on the 'A' circuit finds both CO's and GPA's completely acceptable helmets for showing.

Ya has any one noticed you see more CO's than GPA's now... Most of the people I saw at the mclay were sporting CO's. Even the pros are picking up on the CO.
I owned both, and I doubt that some one would be so stupid to kick some one out of the barn due to a lack of a GPA helmet. Any one who does that obviously wouldn't have that many clients left, I would be the first one out ofthat barn since I HATE wearing my big ugly mushroom GPA.

Well, yes, CO's are the predominant helmet on the circuit right now. You will always see people wearing them even if they don't fit them just to keep up with the trend. The CO has been the 'it' helmet for the past two seasons or so.
It seriously doesn't matter though. If you like the way the helmet feels and fits you, go ahead and wear it, whether it be a CO of a GPA.

GPAs are round helmets...if the rider has an oval head the GPA will not fit the head. It will not only be uncomfy, but also not safe. COs are oval shaped helmets...they fit oval heads better. I could see banning motorcycle helmets from a barn, but not riding helmets due to personal preferrence instead of safety and fit.

I didn't care - wanted to get rid of the GPA dent in my head and my headache - and I just bought it cuz it was comfortable!!! I am cheering in hopes that rust will return. Love them...and they're practical! I think the "bling" is on it's way out....seems like everyone is more quiet and conservative right now. I hope my Pikeur "earth" breeches will catch on. Wow, I've never heard of anyone fitting both brands comfortably. There's a pretty big difference in shape between a GPA and CO. But then...there's a billion different cranium shapes out there too so there's bound to be a few that will fit both.
I couldn't wear a GPA ever...my brain-case is smaller than average and a narrow oval shape. I put on a GPA and I look like a lollipop, LOL! Even if it's tight as heck on my forehead I can still slide my fingers under the sides with room to spare.

* Saltare jacket- black 3 button style (black on black herringbone style fabric (http://shopsaltare.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=92)), silver lining (http://saltareequestrian.com/styleGallery/L300.shtml), black collar, silver piping around collar, black satin buttons
* Saltare shirt- riding shirt with princess seams, covered placket, french cuffs, accent inside collar, V-point choker, silver/grey herringbone fabric with satin accents on choker and inside collar.
* can't decide on grey or beige breeches (if I had a grey horse then definitely grey- otherwise beige I believe)
* custom boots (with silver button embellishment)
* black on black antares helmet (or CO perhaps)
* black leather belt with silver nameplate
although- this coat is my crack: http://shopsaltare.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=434 but I'm certainly NOT a 2 short!

I really hate you. I am a 2 short and the $200 off of the coat just looks much too appealing *must not buy coat, must not buy coat*
makeasplash- Don't worry. I rode in a GPA for 4 years just fine and switched over to a GR8 during the summer and it fits great, too.

I would love to see the darker beige breeches, why don't they have those anymore? Or grey, grey would be nice. And rat catchers to come back, I have way too much hair to stick up, rat catchers held my pony tail very nicely years ago. Everything else has come back, bell bottoms and India cotton, why not rat catchers?

This makes me wonder. What did everyone do 5 years ago when the CO's were virtually obsolete? Did everyone just cram their heads into the GPA's and then rip them off when they were done showing?

I have a navy blue one similar to that on with white piping and silver lining and matching pin stripes! :) My mom put the piping on my old show jacket and now it looks really fancy again!
I am so excited to use it!
I have seen a lot more people have piping put on their coats, I think it is really pretty, and you can stand out in a good way amongst all the other navy blue coats with white show shirts. :D

I love my 'fawn' Ariat pro circuit breeches...Hands down the best breeches I have ever owned. They fit beautifully, are super comfy, and WILL NOT show dirt (perfect for hunting when horse tries to mob you with his nose and hounds are just so excited to see you and your clean breeches ) Plus the darker color and slightly looser fit is very flattering to less than fit thighs!

God I feel like my head must be made of play-dough but I fit in both the COs and GPAs with no issues what so ever...maybe my head is inbetween basketball and oval shapes?
I feel like regular leather belts and basic stuff will be back, thank goodness.
Me too! I thought I was the only one! I have a GPA, a CO Hampton and a CO Wellington, and they all fit perfectly.
And I feel like this will be a conservative year. Navy, and I guess black now that it isn't a taboo, jackets, muted conservative colored shirts, leather belts...nothing outragous and super trendy.

Black jackets, esp ones with hot colored lining. (I got a black/black pinstripe with hot pink lining... it's awesome.)
White shirts with colored inner cuffs.
The old school velvet hunt cap. The CO hampton.
Rust breeches.
I would like to see dark brown boots make a comeback, but I think that's a few years away.

Sigh...I really miss this time of year. I love going to the shops and seeing the new stuff, new coats, shirts and the like.
Since switching to dressage....it is so boring. White breeches, black or blue frock and white stock tie...boooorrrring.
One of these days I will revolt!!!! On the last day of me doing Fourth before the Shad!
So lets have it all girls...what else is new!
I wear a bright yellow waistcoat :D
I know it's not needed, but I like it, and it keeps me warm at winter shows.
I also have banana coloured jodhpurs that match (not wearing my coat, because it was a school show, and you have to wear school uniform, but my waistcoat is pretty much the same colour, and both are darker than that in real, but looks pretty good in a Hack Class  ) :

And I put Yellow, Navy, and Sky Blue ribbons in my hair, and sometimes in Taffy's tail for school Dressage shows.
If you want to be different, I would get something colourful, like a waistcoat, or a tie, or even stock tie, but I wouldn't make it to loud.

In a word...Yes. As soon as I was done with the class, my GPA would come off and a baseball cap would go on.
Now my CO that I wear now, I would wear all day. My head is distinctly oval. I was so happy when I tried these helmets on...I thought finally something that fits like the plastic velvet covered hunt caps we all used to wear.
Mandalea, love the idea unfortunately I am a bit of a conformist..."this is the uniform, I will wear the uniform." But the little girl inside is screaming to come out and shop!

a lot of my riders are starting to wear the rust colored breeches again. and i only allow gpa's in my barn. i cannot stand co's. as for hunt coats, i will not budge from my navy pinstripe and my tan pinstripe. i can wear any shirt with them. a lot of my riders are starting to get black with colored pinstripes though.
If I were to 'train' with this 'trainer' I would revolt by getting a traditional velvet huntcap looking helmet, canary breeches, plaid loud plaid with orange velvet colar, and brown fieldboots or dress boots. Maybe even newmarket boots...

You mean a show bow?
For Me:
I'm still waiting for hunter green to come back... though I suppose it's just as well that it's not "in" right now, as my green coat is far too small and will never fit again (unless I become anorexic and get a boob reduction) and I haven't the money to buy a new one. Nor have I the money to buy a olive or sage/moss green one, but those are lovely.
Working on getting a pair of rust breeches.
I have never really done the green-beige - always regular beige. I do like the fawn color.
I've always hated the look of GPAs... the CO GR8s are better, but I still won't wear one at a show. I still (and will always) rock the traditional velvet at a show (and school in my GR8, which I recently got a friend addicted to).
I'm also working on getting a burgundy shirt.
I would really love to rock a green coat, rust breeches, and a yellow shirt. And then put my horses in flat tack.
I was totally born in the wrong decade.
For Not Me:
Basically, I agree with lots of people here - we're going to see more "back to basics," stuff that's more traditional, more black, still navy, less brown/tan, and I think we'll see some more variations in breeches - a bigger rust comeback than in years previous, darker beiges, less green-beige, and some greys.

Sad.
Actually posting again to ask this: has anyone seen a black hunt coat with a subtle burgundy/cranberry overplaid? I've seen navy, but not black. I think I would really like something like this.
Or even just the fabric? I'm brave enough to try to make it myself...

Just got back from 2 weeks of WEF and here is what i saw allot of:
-Alessandro Albanese belts (no more Hermes H belts) and their white, front button breeches for the jumpers (hunters still look like they are Ariat/TS entrenched)
-V-neck sweaters while hacking or not showing--no more vests
-CO all black helmets (not sure which one that is, but the one that looks velvety with the tiny emblem on it)
-Everyone has backpacks too--not sure what you need to carry with you while you are on the horse, but everyone has one. As a simpleton, I just wear all my accoutrement, but it seems "in" to now carry it all in a backpack.
That's all I can think of now

GPA come in both round and oval. They have the textium and the titium. They are 2 totally different fitting helmets!

My question is - how do "those in the know" know *when* to change? Is there some secret code passed around the cognoscenti?
"Pssst - vests are O.U.T. Sweaters are in - pass it on!"
Is there one person who is so far ahead of the fashion trend that they cut a bow wave through everything and everyone else follows along behind like dinghies in the wake of an ocean liner?
And if so, who is that person?
Or is it more of a Borg collective mind meld? All of a sudden, the swarm changes. Into Allesandro and not Hermes.
Curiouser and curiouser.

I would guess that the poster would fix the top part of her hair like normal hunter hair, over her ears, but then tuck her ponytail down inside her shirt...and the ratcatcher collar came up high enough to disguise the fact that her hair wasn't flipped up into her helmet.
As a fellow rider with very long hair, I've definitely pulled this trick before ;)

That would drive me crazy having all that hair tucked into my collar and hanging down my back. But why does she want rat catchers to "come back" - everyone showing hunters and eq still wear them, as well as some jumper riders too.

If you're tall and then there's not much to hate about them! One of my girls just tried a pair on and bought then, wore them to her lesson today! No breaking in.
They're as close to customs as you'll get without the price, still pricey though!

I am a little late in posting but this is what I am seeing/hearing so far!
For hunters:
Very conservative coats and shirts: think NAVY NAVY NAVY and BLACK BLACK BLACK! Shirts are subtle blues, pinks or whites with printed inside collars.
Pikeur breeches are really in-the Ciara or the Victory. In "Safari" color (greenish gray beige...very interesting color, hard to describe)
Boots should be beyond tall. Like super tall...tallest you could imagine. (I get why, but ouch!)
Schooling will still see lots of Joules and Kingsland as well. And I have been noticing a little bit of a western influence around the barn and shows-cute western shirts over tanks with breeches.
For dressage:
Look forward to less conservative-hooray!
Coats, while still black or navy, are starting to have more fun collars and piping and the coat itself can have a subtle pattern. Think black with black stripe with a pretty grey collar (to match breeches below) and silver pipe.
Same boring white shirt-but a Pikeur or Cavallo with a light stripe and white collar is ok if you are wearing a coat over it!
Breeches can go Champagne again or white with a grey pipe down the side and matching seat.
Belts for everyone are going back to traditional leather with nameplates or clinchers.
Helmets I still see GPA and Charles Owen. Go with what fits you! :)

soo happy, i was at Beval's the other day trying stuff on to get at the sale (can you imagine trying to try on stuff during the sale? it's such a zoo!) and ended up with a gorgeous medium charcoal grand prix coat, with a really pretty purple lining. 2 essex shirts, 1 beacon hill, and 1 TS. well, i kind of put them on reserve (i'd have to be an idiot to buy them right before the sale..) but i'm also going to go pick up some new sponges and spurs. i'm thinking about getting those rolly rubber ended ones, cause my POW spurs are getting worn and icky. i clean them, but the silver is rubbing off and its copper underneath and it's not pretty (not very noticeable on the outside of the spur which is good but its practically all copper on the inside..) does anyone know if the black rubber on the end of the spur will like.. leave black rubs on my pony? he's white..
anywho, i am getting rusts and am wearing it with a tan jacket and a very light blue beacon hill shirt (found at bevals) then i got a white with pink pinstripe TS shirt (i think it was TS... maybe essex) and an aqua/lt blue striped essex shirt and a minty green essex checked shirt . all of these to wear with the new charcoal. woo ! i am so excited to wear the rust, though.

YBIAW: the Pikeurs are not too dark. I know in some pics they look more dark grey-but they actually look pretty normal when not directly next to a Tailored Sportsman green! :) The fit is so much better than some of the other brands. But, as with most things I am sure it depends on your body type.
I think we are seeing a pretty big trend with them. My local tack store started carrying them in white too. SO, they must be pretty popular!
luvs2ride: the navy coats are showing more linings of a darker or same color but they have a pattern to them. Like paisley or stripes. SOOOOO pretty!!!! And I just saw a totally stretch coat-even the outer fabric. It was really cool. I am not a jumper, but I think it would be ideal for that!

But anyways; this season I'll probably be wearing...
Navy Herringbone Jacket and Navy Jacket with a subtle Windowpane. Both with lighter colored linings (like champange or something).
CO Hampton Helmet (because I don't think that they'll ever go out of style).
White tone-on-tone Show Shirts; Also, suble patterned light pink and blue show shirts. All with accenting colors/patterns inside.
Light Fawn or Green-Beige breeches (I've never like the tan breeches very much.)
Super-tall Feild Boots.
Lighter colored Ribbons Belts and Leather Belts.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the grey breeches!! I wore them with my black and lavender windowpane hunt coat, lavender shirt, and black and charcoal GR8. It looked really nice on my grulla, bays, and greys!

As a pony rider in the early 80s, I remember the gray breeches trend. I was never crazy about it then, so I doubt I'd do it this time around. Now rust is another story...Will always love rust!
And for the snarky poster that said find eight spots. Really? I didn't realize that was the point of our sport. Hmmm, maybe you should lighten up, we're just trying to have some fun on this thread. Life is hard out there right now....there's nothing wrong with talking about something 'less' meaningful once in awhile. Your free to disagree, but I would advise not reading a thread about fashion then. :)
