I have a few palominos on the place and 2 out of the 3 have spots. Just dark bay spots. Our stallion has about 4 and my filly seems to be getting more, but she has 3 that are noticeable as of now. I'm sure she has a few more now, I just noticed one by her ear. Now, her sire is the same way, and seems to pass it on to his foals, just random spots. Does anyone else run into this with their palominos?

Here is a picture of her, you can see the one spot on her hip.

I also owned a Palomino gelding about 7 years ago who had a huge one on his white sock, made it look like he had a poop stain on his sock. I even had a judge who asked me if I knew how to keep his socks clean... I just told him that if he knew how to change the color of his hair without hair dye, I would keep his socks white....

They're Bend Or spots. You see them sometimes with Chestnuts too.

So I take it that they are passed on? Our Stallion's dam was Chestnut. Would she be the one passing them on to him? I know that my filly's sire has them and all his foals have at least one and a load of white! LOL!

They're somewhat genetic, but they're not passed on in the typical Mendelian Dominant/Recessive way.

Mr. Blondie has spots on his neck - not dark enough to be called brown, though. Just darker than the rest of him. Especially in the winter when he's clipped, because he turns very very light when clipped.

My palomino mare has one on her withers, about the size of a grande cuppa from Starbucks. After finally determining that it was not dirt, I just called it her Gorbachev spot. It seems to have gotten maybe a bit lighter as she's aged?

I was going to ask- because my palomino turns white in the winter, and when I just clipped him for the 2nd time he had some dark palomino spots where his summer coat was growing in- but they were round spots, not like large areas!

Very strange stuff.

My Palomino has 3 dark spots, and one light one, nothing larger than 1 1/2 inches in diameter.

The Palomino show people called them smutty spots, if I remember right.

My Palomino doesn't have any. If he was kept inside all the time and never allowed to bleach he'd be world quality type for color.

Too bad his "smutty" conformation has already lead to some issues as only a teenage in light work.

Looks like a bend or spot to me. The spot in your horses sock was most likely an ermine spot.

This horse has tons and tons of them for example

Those, as mentioned, seem to be Bend Or spots:

There are also white spots, called Birdcatcher spots in sorrels and those on grays, called The Tetrach spots, as our last stallion had and passed on.

Around here, the cowboys call the dark ones "dollar spots".:)
Many of the better King Ranch horses used to have some and those horses were well liked and sold for more, maybe that is where that came from.

I'm glad that I'm not alone in the spots... LOL! Thanks also for the site. Makes for a good read tonight. I just find it interesting that they get them in so many different colors too. My filly's half sister has a wet mark, that is what it looks like, not a spot, on her hindquarter about as large as a basketball. Just on the one side, looks like she is wet or laid in something dark.

Oh no, the spot on my gelding was as large as a softball in the middle of his sock. It was just there.... LOL!
