View Full Version : Feed - 40 or 50 pound bags?

The barn changed feed for some of the horses - not mine.
I am always intrigued by feed - so read info on the bag - and it said 40 lbs.
I don't think I have ever seen that before. I have seen BP in 40 lbs but not horse feed.
I am so curious - I think I will call tomorrow and compare prices.
Granted - I would rather lug around 40 lb bags.
This reminded me of the old days when one bought a pound of coffee.
Then the "pound" kept getting smaller.

I never saw that until I moved to Oklahoma. It makes you think you're getting a bargain, but right off you're getting 20% less feed!! Often for the same or more money. I buy only from a mill where they sell in #50 bags. We call it "Redneck mathmatics"!!!

the only place i know of that sells feed in 40lbs bags is Atwoods with their Ranch Pro line of horse feeds.... but would never feed the stuff as i have a couple friends who have lost horses and llamas to that feed...so i wont feed it.
i get my oats and beet pulp in 40lbs sacks though

I *believe* it was Nutrena who went from 50lb bags to 40lb bags last year to "avoid raising prices."
I guess they figured their clients either:
a)Can't read
b)Never lift their own feed bags
c)Don't pay attention to how much feed they use
d)All of the above

I use Safe Choice and Empower and the bag size has not changed.

My bad for not realizing it was only some of their products, not all.

I think it was more of 'temporary' thing. I bought a bag or two of 40 pound Safe Choice last summer. The bags then went back to 50 pounds, and that's where they are now around here.

I paid attention when I bought mine all summer (because it was mentioned here about the lower weight bags) and I never saw a 40lb bag.

I started buying Wellsolve W/C last year and noticed that it was only 40lb. bags. I was a little put off considering the high price but then I realized how light the actual feed is and I get a lot more in the bag actually. A bag of Wellsolve lasts alot longer than a 50 lb. bag of my other horses grain although I feed the same size scoop.

That's why we feed by weight, not volume. ;)

ugh, i was quite irritated by this on Sunday...normally buy 50 lb bags of timothy pellets. This weekend I bought a bag at the normal price. Go to pick it up and think to myself "either i am getting really strong, or this is a bad bag".... glance down at bag and it says 40 lbs. Ugh.
