View Full Version : superficial question about hair & helmets in the hunter world - to cut or not to cut?

So right now I have long hair (well below my shoulders), and for months I have been eyeballing this inverted bob haircut: http://www.hairfinder.com/hair3/jenny-bob1.jpg
I've always had long hair so not sure how I would put my hair up in my helmet with this haircut? (I would probably have it 1/2-1 inch longer than in the pic though)
I don't show very often so am not *that* worried about hunter hair, but I still put my hair up in the ponytail-and-flip fashion when I ride daily.
Soooo.... to cut or not to cut? Anyone have luck with putting your hair up w/ this type of haircut?

Go for the haircut! It looks great! Slap on a thicker hairnet, secure at the nape with an elastic and put your helmet on rocking it from back to front.

First I would worry about whether or not you want to cut your hair. Frankly if you've always had long hair - shucks - liberate yourself and chop it off - there is nothing like a great haircut... then worry about your hair. With the new helmets - w/ that bob you'll probably need a few hairclips/bobbypins & hairnet but shouldn't matter - look at Meredith Michaels Beerbaum - she has shortish hair - and it's definitely not affecting her riding any
the main thing is not to worry about your hair w/ a helmet - worry about what its like w/o the helmet.

You'll be fine helmet-wise. Just buy a thing of bobby pins and keep it in your trunk.

being someone with super thick long hair who puts their hair up daily in their helmet....will your helmet still fit? I know my hair gets to thick for my helmet sometimes. when I get it cut I tell my hair dresser to thin it out and make sure I still can get something of a pony tail, this keeps my IRH in place as I bought it to put my hair up!!! other then she does what she wants! If I have a lot of layers or what not that are loose I get a stretchy headband then my hair net then my helmet and everything stays in place!

I got this type of cut back in April and was able to make it work. I had my stylist do a sharper angle from front to back so I had enough length to cover the tops of my ears. Then I went so short in the back that my helmet covered it all. I'd put on the hairnet, drape it over my ears, then I'd barrette my hair and the hairnet together since I didn't have much hair left in the back for it to hold. Then I'd spray away with a cheapo can of aquanet. It wasn't as fluffy as it used to be when I had longer hair but it certainly got the job done.
And yes, I took a hunter hair photo, hairnet and my helmet into the salon with me. I'm sure they thought I was nuts but we got the job done.

I've had a similar cut before that I managed. I would just use two hairnets (the really thick ones) and then sort of maneuver my hair over my ears after they were on. Worked well, really.

I can honestly say I've never once noticed someone's hair if it is neatly contained in their hat in some way, whether it's "hunter hair" or not... the only time I've noticed someones hair is if it is out of control or flopping in a loose braid or pony tail.
As someone else said, you may need to get a new, smaller helmet once you don't have all that hair in it.

Rebel that I am, I had my long hair cut YEARS ago and have had a very short 'do ever since. There is definetly not enough hair to fake the hunter hair look and I am not going to mess around with gobs of hairnests, pantyhose and hair pins and products. I just plunk my helmet down and off I go, never once having my hair as an issue on whether I win or not! LOL! Day is done, helmet comes off, I run my fingers thru the hair and away I go, baseball cap optional! I do go to get a trim right before shows so I don't ahve any strays running amok !

i have my hair cut similarly, although it isn't quite as short in the back.
i can do hunter hair just the same as when i had longer (nearly shoulder-length) hair. hairnet, ponytail (although it's a pitiful stump of mostly hairnet now), put on helmet back to front.
the only thing i would be concerned about is your helmet not fitting anymore! if it fit with your longer hair up, it most likely will be WAY too big for you now. you may have to get a new helmet, or find a way to pad up the one you have.

I did the same thing last winter (cut my hair from below my shoulders to just below my chin) and had to buy a new helmet.
While my hair was growing out, one trick that worked for me was to do "pigtails" within the hairnet - put the hairnet on, then secure two pigtails catching the hairnet and the hair underneath. This helps you catch more of your hair in the net (since the shorter front pieces will not reach all the way to a base of the neck ponytail) and prevents having to use a zillion bobby pins to keep your hair in!
I'd say go for it - the cut is very cute!
(In the interest of full disclosure, I have been growing my hair out ever since because I couldn't stand the short cut. I realized too late that I'm not big on not being able to catch my hair up in a ponytail to keep it off my neck....)

I've done it and just don't worry about putting the hair over the ears. Hell, I've never worried about that, but I can still flip it up in the back.

I just got a short haircut similar to this one and was worried about my hunter hair too! I showed this past weekend...and here's what I did.
One hairnet put on from front to back. My hair is way too short to make a ponytail, so I make a pretend ponytail with the hairnet...twist it in the back into a little ponytail. Then I pin that up with two bobby pins. Then lots more bobby pins all around the bottom and voila! You have psuedo hunter hair!

I got the haircut! Very similar to the picture but about an inch longer - I can still get it into a nub of a ponytail to pin up in my helmet - I love it!! I'll consider going a tad shorter or more layered next time ;) Thanks for all the advice!!!

Hey,
I recently had my hair cut. I donated it to cancer, it was almost to my elbows. It was so thick, my hairdresser was able to cut it into 3 sections to make 3 wigs! I have never had short hair before, i was really worried that it would look like an afro! So i searched on the internet for weeks to find the perfect haircut. I found this one,
http://www.imagecows.com/uploads/454b-Eva%20Longoria.jpg I found that i could still put it up in a little pony tail, and a half pony tail, for when i was riding.

I have that haircut, plus bangs. for schooling, I wear an elastic headband to hold it back some (my trainer can be picky!) and go on. For shows, I use a heavy hairnet and it looks fine. I have done the whole "hunter hair for short hair" but don't usually. The short hair is MUCH easier than long IMO. ON a side note, my daughter also has a short bob, and she shows as well, using just a hairnet under her helmet.

I have that EXACT haircut and it works fine. Granted, I show dressage but I pull it into a low pony tail, and band it. from there, I bobbypin my bangs back, usually swept to the side. The layers get pinned too. From there, I empty about a gallon of hairspray onto it(okay not that much, but a fair amount).
I use a two net system. One gets wrapped around the pony and pinned, and then another goes over my entire head, pinned in appropriate places.
Don't you just love bob's? :)
