I got a bag of TC "Training" feed today http://triplecrownfeed.com/training.php I'm hoping it will be the end of my quest to find a feed that is everything the finicky new horse needs. Anyway, the first test has been passed. The horse likes it :D

Wow, I LIKE the profile.

And... drumroll... it's alfalfa free! Still has soy, but... it's a start!

Interesting. Thanks for posting about it!

I am SO EXCITED about this feed. I can't wait to try it for Blush. I hope she likes it as much as your horse!

My feedstore told me they might be getting on their next truck from Triple Crown, which come in 3 weeks.

Very cool! I saw this feed for the first time at a Triple Crown stand awhile ago and was really excited to try in on my hard keeper when it finally hit stores. But when my feed store finally got a bag in to try, I was so appalled at the price that I wouldn't even give it a second look. Mind if I ask what kind of price you guys are seeing?

I have no idea what my feedstore will charge for this TC feed, but I'm paying $19.50 a bag for Senior.

I'll have to check the receipt, but I think it was $23  That's about what I'm paying for 30% and Complete is $19.55 for me right now. It's worth it to me if he'll eat it and it will help him put on some weight. I'm so tired of worrying about this horse and food.....

Get out of my brain! Do you have any idea how many times I've said this with regard to Blush?

What have you been feeding, and how much of it?

Blush gets 9 qts of TC Senior and 3 qts of oats a day, plus a cup of oil, which is getting a little rediculous. She doesn't usually eat it all...she does get most of the oats and leaves about 1-3 qts of Senior a day.

This guy went on strike a while back and decided to stop eating Complete. Out of frustration, I let him tell me which of the other feeds I had that he would like. He could choose between Complete, Legends 11%, and TC Senior. I knew I'd be adding oats and alfalfa no matter what. He chose the Legends.

It's not at all what I would have chosen for him. It has waaayy too many fillers and middlings. Anyway, he was getting about 4# of the Legends, 1 1/2# of oats, and 1 1/2# of alfalfa pellets twice a day. That's about as much as I can give him. He doesn't always eat everything, but if I give him more he never cleans it up. Evidently, he has a maximum volume of feed that he thinks he should consume  He is eating lots of hay, so that's something. The kid and I think we have seen a bit more meat on his bones lately.

I'm hoping to get him back on a beet pulp based feed and I'm starting to replace the Legends with the Training. If he'll keep eating it, I'd like to replace the oats too. I'll keep the alfalfa until I feel good about his (not quite) ulcer situation.

maybe he'll stop being so picky when his ulcers are healed?

I think my feed store quoted me something like $26, which scared my husband to death. He looked terrified that I was going to order some bags for myself.

But BeastieSlave, I completely understand why it would be worth it to you. I swear that the hard keeper I once owned could read my feed store receipts. If it wasn't the expensive stuff, she turned up her nose.

Keep us updated on how the TC training works out for your horse.

YIKES! And you feed HOW much per day? again!

Mine get 2 lbs per day of Triumph 10% at $9.80 per bag. Feeding them some every day keeps them coming up so I can get my hands on them when I want to.
If they want to eat more than two pounds, there's 40 acres of pasture they can go graze in. Maybe mine thrive under these spartan conditions because they don't know any better?

Yeah, I've had easy keepers, too. It's nice, isn't it?

My current horse (and I imagine BeastieSlave's horse) is a hard keeper. They just have to be managed and fed differently than easy keepers.

Yes, it is painful  Bless your heart, I hope you know how lucky you are to only have easy keepers.

As for horses thriving in spartan conditions because they don't know better.... I can only hope you're joking.

Thankfully, the rest of my herd is easier to manage than this beastie. I also have a couple who get grain mainly because the others are, and they'd be unhappy to be left out. That's what the oats, ration balancer, and Legends are for. Mike, I'm sure you know not all horses are the same and some do require special care. I'm hoping that once the ulcers are under control and the spring grass has come in, this guy will be easier to manage too. Until his needs change, I'll give this hard-working horse that my daughter adores (and I have a lot invested in) all the special treatment and feed he needs!
