Have 2 Amazon gift cards burning a hole in my pocket, meaning suggested books must be available upon Amazon for this buying spree.

Yes, I tried the COTH "search" feature for the last 15 minutes to no avail. So, please, humor me & make good suggestions. TIA

Looking for more along the line of learn to do it yourself type, though open to any good primer in general.

If it helps to know, my personal horses stay barefoot & out in pasture 365. Nope, not a barefoot freak. Simply not ridden, so why waste HUGE amounts of monies shoeing something that does not need shod? Any ranch horse that shows up to stay in this pasture arrives barefoot. (Never asked why, just happy they do, due to pecking order pissing matches.)

Happened across, "Hoof Problems," by Rob Van Nassua & it looked interesting. As one gelding is prone to blow outs in the coronet band, which is why I thought "Hoof Problems" might be interesting reading. 12 lovely acres of horse heaven & he blows out?

Pete Ramey's 10 DVD Set "Under the Horse" is one of the best buys you can make. I don't know that you can buy it on Amazon though honestly. You might be able to buy his first book, Making Natural Hoof Care Work for You. He's changed his thinking/methods slightly since the book was published but it's still an excellent resource. You can learn more on his site: www.hoofrehab.com

A totally free resource is: www.ironfreehoof.com Step by step on "trimming from the top"...an excellent trimming technique.

Maybe you can find KC's book, "The Chosen Road" in Amazon. If not, go to:

What titles have you managed to find so far on the subject you're intrested in?

Butlers "Priciples of Horseshoeing" is I'd say the best written on the subject. His latest one Volume III is excellent but a bit pricey as good books usually are. If that's out of your price range by all means go with Volume II. You'll probably be able to get a deal on that one and is just as good for what you want to know.

The Army Manual is also excellent. I'd highly recommend that as well.

Those are my 2 favorites. For an even more extensive list go to the wcf website www.wcf.org.uk. Look at the list of books recommended for test study. All excellent. Recommend them all. Forget about all this BUA stuff being pushed on here.

Matter of fact, with exception of Butler's I'd disregard anything written after 1990

Another resource is http://thehorseshoof.com

The information on the website is free-doesn't help you spend your amazon card but any of the trim articles by Yvonne and James are excellent.

I like No Hoof No Horse. Can't remember the author's name off hand.

AGAIN, I have about $50 in Amazon gift cards. If it is not on Amazon, & not about $50, it will not be purchased.

The Butler books are pricey. Volume II seems to start (used) at $140 & go up. Volume III really is not that much more costly than II. *ouch*

Still trying to Google the book by the ARMY. *banging head against wall*

Goodness, this is turning out to be such a trial that stress eating sounds far more fun. Wonder how much chocolate I can buy on Amazon for $50?

What basic searches have brought up on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=hoof+trimming

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Pete+ramey (This link also has a "10 Minute Trim" DVD. Really want a "picture book," but this seems like the only dvd on Amazon.)

If you know how to do a better Amazon search, please link it & give your specific recommendations found in the search. TIA

I really, really appreciate the links to the read it online free resources! Though still would like a book or two in my hot little hands just itching to spend these gift cards. I dunno it may come down chocolate after all.

THANK YOU

OK I looked at your amazon search:

Pete's book is great BU he has updated many things since he wrote the book-some updates are on his website (free)-but the mac-daddy IS his DVD series-which does not look to be on Amazon.

Jaime Jackon's book is also a great read, full of information but *I* would not use it as a sole piece of information for trimming.

Jaime's books Paddock Paradise and Founder are also excellent resources...but not trim manuals.

Hope that helps.

I just saw two more-

Jaime's OTHER book is strictly information about the wild horses he observed-also a great read

Joe Camp's book (remember Benji) is HIS story of shod to barefoot and is a wonderful read but not a trim manual.

This is in your price range: http://www.amazon.com/No-Foot-Horse-Soundness-Performance/dp/1872119484/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231618303&sr=8-1

It's called No Foot No Horse, by Gail William and Martin Deacon. It doesn't just cover healthy feet, but talks about problem feet, too. It's largely about shoeing, but soundness is soundness.

I also like http://www.amazon.com/Sound-Hoof-Horse-Health-Ground/dp/0964598272/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231618454&sr=1-1. I've leant this book to a number of my trimming clients.

Neither are trimming or shoeing manuals but do cover the principles of a good trim/shoeing. If you want to learn more about your horse's feet, these are good books to start with.

TYVM LMH, you helped me make progress as to which to spend my Amazon gift cards on. TY Matryoshka.

Still open for suggestions!

Would like to find the ARMY manual (anywhere) in that I am curious as to its' price.

Wish I could afford the Butler Manuals. Would Volume One be of good use, as it is in my price range.

Vol I would be good if you could find it. It's been out of print for a long time now. It was the text back when I went to school. Although the other volumes are leaps and bounds better I'd still think Vol I would be adaquate for the stuff you want to know. Was known as the "Bible of Horseshoeing" for many years.

I wouldn't waste your money on the Burton Principle's of Horseshoeing, at least not volume II. It has 3 tiny paragraphs on trimming a horse to go barefoot, the rest is all about shoeing. Maybe volume III is different, I don't have that one. There is a lot of good info in there but it isn't a trimming manual.

Too bad Pete Ramey's dvd's aren't on Amazon, expensive but great.

I have and love Jaime Jackson's big book on trimming as well as his book "Founder". I'd recommend both.

Principles of Horseshoeing - Doug Butler $44 on Amazon

It has a lot on shoeing but it also has trimming and anatomy so that you could learn how a correct trim should look.

"The Cavalry Horseshoer's Technical Manual" (War Department Technical Manual), and also "Making Natural Hoof Care Work for You," by Pete Ramey.

Thank you everyone for all the input. When there are more monies to spend elsewhere, I have an idea of what to next purchase. Again, thank you.
