So I just thought I would check out how expensive it is to enter an upper level event thinking.. okay the higher you go the more expensive it gets... Well I clicked on the Rolex thing and is it really one $100 to enter? Are there any other fees? BN events range from 160-175... why are the more expensive than rolex?

I have heard that the organizer of rolex has kept the entry so low because it costs so much to just get to the first jog of rolex (the journey).

Yes, there are many more fees. Stabling, starter, drug, FEI. Although, Rolex has always been on the cheaper side.

Janie has been able to keep the entry so low because of the generosity of the title sponsor, Rolex.

To stable its only $20 a night. What are the drug and FEI fees if you know?

That is a very nice thing! I am sure some places (not just in the eventing world) would still have a high price tag no matter the sponsor!

USEA starter fee $12
USEF drug fee $15
USEF admin fee $8
USEF IHP fee $35
total - $70
Also remenber that most people will be stabling for 6-8 days which would come out to:
$120 for 6 days
$140 for 7 days
$160 for 8 days

Riders come from all over to compete at Rolex. There are many more expenses than just the entry fee.
Stabling, you are there about 10 days
All the various fees
Campground fee for 10 days or so, or motel and food
Feed, bedding, etc
Fuel. It is 3000 miles RT for us. And since we are not hauling any client horses it's all for one horse to compete.
Janie has been very generous to the riders by keeping cost as low as she possibly can.

Agree with the above post. All riders are required to have FEI memberships for horse and rider which is at total of $30. Then they also have to have the FEI passport which is another $300. Being an upper level rider is not cheap by any means. Even though we lower level peps have to pay large entry fees, they are nothing compared to the fees that the ULRs incure especially if they have multiple horses.

I don't know about European events, but here in the states, Rolex is the exception rather than the rule.
Check the entry fees for any CCI (or CIC) ** or *** and you'll see it's very expensive just to be on the grounds.
Rolex is cheap because of all the reasons mentioned by others and, frankly, the riders who get there deserve that one small break. Think of all the BN, N, T, P, *, I, **, A, *** entry fees they paid along the way, too!

Also, the Rolex Kentucky organizer, Equestrian Events Inc, with the support of its title sponsor, Rolex Watch, U.S.A., provides every rider who starts Cross Country a $500 travel allowance.

I must say when I rode there in 2003 it was really cool paying I believe it was $180 for the entry & stabling for the week (this was pre-IHP and drug fees). Then just for starting I got the $500 travel, and the lovely embroidered Rolex sheet (it was a fly sheet my year so not the really cool wool cooler). We also got jackets, hats, treats, and all sorts of goodies. But I will consider that a wash since for me it was about 5500 miles round trip.

Also, they are making a really good chunk of change off admissions and tickets. How many other events have 50,000 spectators (at at least $25 per person).

If you know how much they make, do you know how must it costs to put it on?

Let's see, almost every weekend with pro and college football (e.g. Texas A&M's stadium has 81,000 and sells out consistently, Folsom Field is small with 56,000); Some NASCAR, CART/Indy events can seat on the order of 100,000.

I think she meant "horse trials" as "events" .... like, there are not the same amount of spectators at Fair Hill, etc.

Yes, that is what I meant. I'm sure Rolex has to have the most spectators by far for a 3 day in the US. Is there anyplace else that has 50,000 admissions (or even close to it) in a weekend? Also, don't the vendors pay a fee to set up in the trade fair? I have no idea what they pay to the horse park, and I'm sure it's not cheap. I was only commenting that the $$$ they are making from tickets I'm sure helps to keep entry fees low. And more power to them, I wish there were more equine events drawing that kind of crowd.

However, Burghley HT is not free to enter. Neither grooms nor riders stay for free, There are some meal vouchers, but not enough to feed the groom and rider for the duration.
Badminton is usually generous if they provide all of that.
We should go! Maybe in 2010.....
