Most of the eventers.....at least from this area....haven't come down there yet. Looks like the mass migration starts mid-January. Once those flocks come down...I bet there will be work grooming and/or riding.

Have you gone to the barns and asked in person if they have work for you? Maybe try calling some of the vets and farriers and ask and I bet Julie from JBF would know some people to contact.

OP:
Check with Dogwood stables in town. Go up there to Brad after the morning workouts are done....
He offered me a job breezing the babies a while back.... and I am 5'9" and like 190 pounds..... I figured they must need help! :)

BornFree: I hope so!! I just have to survive until then.
EJ: I put a call into her! Thanks!
Vbunny: I've been all but stalking barns in the area. Nothing.
Naters: Dogwood isn't hiring right now. They have a whole cult that takes up the track like 12 wide. Crazy!
Anybody else? Anything? I would prefer a riding job, but I will groom, muck, braid, whatever.

Have you called up to Phillip's crew to see if they have enough hands for when they come down. Get your flyers up and about. Someone always ends up short handed....either because help ran back home or got hurt.
Have you look into any restaurants for waiting tables? That is something I always had luck finding....and made good money doing....better than selling your body!;)

Lol! You're always the optimist, Born Free! I guess I should be a little more specific when I say I'll do ANY kind of riding, huh?

I posted a list of farms on your other galloping jobs thread. Good luck, money and jobs are hard to come by. I am an experienced, knowledgeable barn manager type and I had to accept a job at $8.00/hr, seems par for the course in my area. Makes me sick and I try not to concentrate on it. At least I have a job I guess.

Thanks so much Calamber! Some job is better than no job and I'll take anything I can get right now. Within reason of course, don't worry Lex!

This is an email I received, dated Jan. 3.
"Nancy Wetmore is headed to Aiken from Canada on Tuesday. Yesterday, her head groom broke her leg. She needs someone ASAP. In your circle of friends, is there someone who is looking for a 4 month groom's job in Aiken. Housing available, 6 days a week, 7:30 to 4. Working with show jumpers. Start this week.
Nancy Wetmore cell 416 417-8424.
Good luck.

bonnie mosser was looking recently. Her winter place is about an hour from Aiken. You might also want to check with Courtney Cooper, who does hire working students and does winter in Aiken. There may be things posted here http://www.theaikenhorse.net/Classifieds.htm or you could look or post here http://www.aikenhorsesonline.com/classified_ads.html. Have you checked with the feed/tack stores? Have you checked with Bit of Britain if they need help covering the trailer? Good luck

You could post on Aiken Horses online. The diff tack shops have bulletin boards and the breeches and bridles one has a binder with everything including people looking for jobs and jobs looking for people.

I run a concierge business in Aiken and may need some back-up help for horse care jobs during the winter. I will send you a PM with my info and we can connect. Right now I don't need help but I will soon...also, I wait tables one night a week at Tako Sushi...good money, 1/2 price sushi & great way to meet new people and other sushi loving horse people! :D

Guys, you have been soooooo helpful. I'm coming up with a lot of prospects for groom jobs and while nothing is concrete yet, I'm optimistic. Ideally, I would still love a riding only position but work is work, right? Keep me in mind and keep the advice coming! I have hung up pleas for employment with pictures attached at every tack shop from here to Augusta and have posted ads on aikenhorsesonline and several other sites. Thanks again guys, COTH is great!

You can try Glenn Thompson at the racetrack. He's normally stabled by the smaller training track and sometimes needs riders. Great trainer!Got to the feed/tack stores, they have ads for work and often they know of people who need help.

Did you check with the shows? They often need help on show days and need help painting jumps ect. . . Go to Highfields and ask.

You might want to try contacting Holly Payne, Doug Payne's sister. If she doesn't have an opening, she may know someone who does.

Left a message for Holly Payne. I was optimistic that the polo community might have something to offer, but apparently the season doesnt start again until April so no dice. At this point, I'm going a little crazy with desparation!

There is an ad in the paper for a Vet assistant and also a part time receptionist.

Do you mean the Aiken Standard?

Yep. It was in Sunday's "paper". I saw it on-line. I think its Southern Equine Services. Jamie Carter & friends. On Banks Mill Rd. Nice enough people. They do seem to need help often though so I guess your temporary status as an Aiken resident should not bother them?

Someone told my Jan Bynny was looking for help.. this was a while ago - maybe a month or so ago now.. but its worth a shot. I'd stop by barns and inquire in person. Word of mouth is the best way to go about it in my experience! good luck!
