The farm at which I keep 2 of my horses is downsizing their lesson string (they have 10 lesson horses and teach about 10 lessons a week). "Ducky" is a very sweet 12 hand, approx. 17 year old gelding.
From what I understand, he was acquired through a broker in New England a couple of years ago. He was previously owned by a little girl and shown in short stirrup. He has been out of work for a couple of years.
The positive: He is very well mannered and is an easy keeper. He is a great companion and has been turned out in a variety of turnout groups with no issues. He is barefoot, has nice feet, and at this point, requires no meds or supplements. He is great on crossties and stands quietly to be groomed and tacked.
The issues: He can be a little fearful of new people entering his stall (due to a past instructor giving him IM injections in his stall). He is fine for the BM, the staff, and people he is used to. He will come right over and take a treat and be fine with a new person; otherwise he may turn around and stand against the back wall of his stall. He is not mean or dangerous, he is just a little stand-offish without an incentive.
He has been out of work due to a lack of rider. I was told that when he arrived he was jumping around small courses and getting his lead changes. I was also told that he can be quick. He took off with a little rider in big grass ring at the farm (a former grand prix field). I have only seen him ridden once, and he was quick at the trot for his larger size child pilot.
I have been told that he is great on a leadline and that he is best suited as a leadline mount or companion. It is possible that if he was in a program he could be a more consistent riding mount.
Ducky only received his Rabies vaccination this past fall and does not have a current Coggins.
Ducky is located in central CT. Here are a few pictures of him:
