The farm at which I keep 2 of my horses is downsizing their lesson string (they have 10 lesson horses and teach about 10 lessons a week). "Ducky" is a very sweet 12 hand, approx. 17 year old gelding.

From what I understand, he was acquired through a broker in New England a couple of years ago. He was previously owned by a little girl and shown in short stirrup. He has been out of work for a couple of years.

The positive: He is very well mannered and is an easy keeper. He is a great companion and has been turned out in a variety of turnout groups with no issues. He is barefoot, has nice feet, and at this point, requires no meds or supplements. He is great on crossties and stands quietly to be groomed and tacked.

The issues: He can be a little fearful of new people entering his stall (due to a past instructor giving him IM injections in his stall). He is fine for the BM, the staff, and people he is used to. He will come right over and take a treat and be fine with a new person; otherwise he may turn around and stand against the back wall of his stall. He is not mean or dangerous, he is just a little stand-offish without an incentive.

He has been out of work due to a lack of rider. I was told that when he arrived he was jumping around small courses and getting his lead changes. I was also told that he can be quick. He took off with a little rider in big grass ring at the farm (a former grand prix field). I have only seen him ridden once, and he was quick at the trot for his larger size child pilot.

I have been told that he is great on a leadline and that he is best suited as a leadline mount or companion. It is possible that if he was in a program he could be a more consistent riding mount.

Ducky only received his Rabies vaccination this past fall and does not have a current Coggins.

Ducky is located in central CT. Here are a few pictures of him:

I'm wondering it Ducky would be a good pasture mate here at my farm... I'm just not sure if it would be forever because I might take in another boarder in the future. I could use a cute little guy like Ducky to keep my mare company when the boarder goes for rides and my mare is alone...

Ducky is available for free lease and there are no set time minimums or maximums. He is a wonderful companion, he is currently turned out with a 30 y/o retiree and a 17.2H WB gelding (he rotates on the turnout schedule between the two).

I took him out on Sunday to clean him up and he was very well behaved and there were no issues in retrieving him.

Do you think Ducky would be suitable for lead line in a Hippotherapy setting? Would he be available to come to upstate NY?

At this point, I do not think that Ducky would be suitable. I think that he needs to be in a program to be used undersaddle and I worry about the liability in using him for therapeutic purposes (unless it is equine assisted mental health ground work).

There are no limits on the duration or location of the lease.

I need a third companion type and prefer a small pony. My 2 boys are well behaved but getting too attached. I am in so. central KY, about an hour and half below Lexington. Not sure how to work out the logistics but I could/would give him a forever home.

Ducky would probably love to come live with you.

I could've tried to get him on a van but unfortunately all the southbound horses at the farm left this past week to go to Florida.

I cannot imagine that the owners will chip in for shipping but maybe we can work some COTH magic and get him at least closer to you.

I'm looking for a leadline pony for my 4 year old granddaughter. But it sounds like she might need something smaller right now. She's been riding a 6 year old medium pony and even off lead but I think she needs to ride something like a small pony or overgrown mini. She's not big so she will last on a little guy for a few years. She had been showing in leadline classes. I think she fell too often and is getting a bit fearful.

Oh no! I just looked at his photos, he's so adorable!!! He looks pretty small, I'm in Chester County, PA, just outside of Delaware about 30 minutes or so from the Delaware Memorial Bridge, but I know CT is quite a haul.

You probably already have him taken by now, he's a little doll. It would be worth investing in his training, he's just so cute.

At the moment, Ducky is still available although a suitable person is coming to look at him this Sunday. I'll keep you updated Susan P.

Ducky went to his new home on Sunday and I couldn't be more pleased with his lovely new owners. Thank you all for your interest; I will keep you posted if the situation changes.

Ducky's friend Buddy is still in need of a great home. He is very sweet and a wonderful companion. Here is his thread: http://www.chronicleforums.com/Forum/showthread.php?t=171391
