It is great to be welcomed!!!! I am a tad bit (understatement) nervous because I won't know a soul.

This came about really suddenly, so I am not sure yet who I will be working with. I am on a very tight budget so a BNT is probably out of the question.

I hope you are right and that I won't want to leave. My husband and I are hoping to find a warm place to retire. This will be a great opportunity to get a feel for the area. I am hoping he can fly down for a week while I am there.

Thanks again and have an extraordinary day!! Kathy

I'm heading down there from Massachusetts at the end of Feb. just for a month. It'll be my first time down there too. Luckily, I have a family friend to stay with, & my hubby's making the trip with me & flying back. I'm also going to be 'feeling the place out' for future retirement plans... and of course, escaping this horrendous winter weather for a bit. I can't wait! You won't exactly be on my route down there, but it's nice to know there are others 'out there' in the same boat!

shea'smom - thanks! I'm learning lots and trying to do it on my own (eventer_mi is a super star at doing that sort of thing! and gives me lots of great advice)

pegasusmom - no way, a discount at ashtons??? eventrider keeps telling me about the ghost burger but I always get distracted by the specials....maybe if I go more often right?

:cool:This is getting exciting!

I won't be down there until February at the earliest. I am still trying to work out all of the details.

We are getting about 6" of snow today, low teens will be the high over the next several days and the high next Thursday is supposed to be 8 below zero. That is NOT windchill, that is regular old temperature. If it is windy it could easily be double digits below zero.

Wait, why am I waiting until February????

You guys have been so extremely helpful already, I thought I would ask you another question.

Do I need to think about Sand Clear or something before we come to NC from WI? I want to make sure I do everything that I should do before making the trip. Any advice/recommendations are appreciated!

I still can't believe we are actually going to Southern Pines!!!! My Secret Santa gave me some awesome short sleeve shirts and I cannot wait to wear them in a month!!!!

Umm...LovetoJump - So. Pine is defnitely warmer than what you're used to, but in February, it can be chilly. So, bring layers! You might not get a chance to wear your short sleeved shirts, but you probably won't have to dress in down.

So, give us a heads-up when you're on your way down here, and we'll get-together at Ashten's. There's something for everybody there!

Oh, eventer_mi you are funny. I know the affect that weather has on you is dependent upon what you are used to. When I was in high school (long, long time ago) we had gym uniforms that consisted of shorts and a t-shirt. The rule was that we would do outside activities as long as it was at least 49 degrees outside. 62 was probably bikini weather:yes:

I moved from Chicago, IL to So. Pines, NC about two years ago and I LOVE it here!! I really don't miss anything about Illinois... is that bad?? Not only do you have the Carolina Horse Park nearby (with a ton of events, xc schoolings, schooling shows, etc.) but there are a ton of trainers here as well!! Make sure you hack around the Foundation (but probably with someone who knows their way around because it is VERY big!!) at some point because it is beautiful.

Ashtens, Corfu, Bell Tree, etc. are all in town and are very yummy!!

UNCEventer: I heard you are with Cherie again this year... how exciting!! :) Make sure you stop by the tack shop and say "hey" to me.

I have great news!! My trainer is going to ride down with me. She needs to look for a horse for a client, and I am bringing one of her young horses to leave with a trainer down there. Of course, I shouldn't jinx myself. The client hasn't committed 100%.

Now, it is REAL! I can hardly believe it. The windchill is 40 below today. But, that is o.k., I am heading South in a little over two weeks!!! YIPPEE!!!

I still am waiting on advice regarding Sand Clear. Is that something that I should give my boy before I come down there?

I will be arriving the week-end of January 30th.

What evening would work for our dinner get-together? Any evening after Tuesday would work great for me. I am so excited about meeting everyone! You guys have been just fabulous!!!!!!

Have a great, warm, sunny day!! Kathy:cool:

As far as I know, Sand Clear isn't something that would hurt to give if your horse doesn't need it. Having never been to Wisconsin, I have no idea the type of soil that you deal with either.

I live very near the coast in SC, and our soil is EXTREMELY sandy (Sudi says it's great for rolling!). When he first moved here from Missouri, I had him on Sand Clear, but then eventually just moved him to a beetpulp based feed (Triple Crown Senior), and that seems to take care of him just fine (although he's never had an issue with the sand really). He is, however, a Fantastic drinker too - so I'm sure that helps.

Sorry that's not more help!! If it were my horse, I wouldn't worry about it till I got there. Once at the farm, check out the environment, keep an eye on your horse, do some fecal sample tests, and then you should at least have an idea of how to progress on that end.

Sudis Girl: Thank you. I ordered SandClear today. It certainly can't hurt. Oreo eats everything in sight. I am sure he will eat grass-roots and all while there. We haven't seen grass in a while and it will be another 4 months until we do.

I am planning a day trip to the Charleston area while I am there. I have always wanted to see it. Perhaps we could meet up while I am in town!

oh, and I don't know if the perma-locals will agree, but my horse drinks LOADS more water when he's in the sandhills. I always assumed it is because of the sand. I feed flax and sandclear every once in a while just in case though :)

It may go down to the single digits here tonight as well as perhaps low teens tomorrow night.. in the three years, we have been down here, this would be about the coldest.. but then we came from Kansas and my pony knows about some cold.. he just grew a thicker coat this year. Hopefully, we will be in a warming trend by the time you start down here.

LoveToJump
Jan. 15, 2009, 06:18 PM
Yes, I saw the forecast for 13 degrees tomorrow night. That is wicked cold for you guys! I have to admit that even though it is considerably warmer than it is here, I would be disappointed if it didn't warm up to at least the 40's.

So, you folks that come down to Southern Pines for Winter training. What do you do at night? I figure as long as the sun is shining I can watch lessons, ride, play with my horse, etc. But, I have no idea what I will do when the sun goes down.

I assume there are many tack stores in the area. Is there one that rents dvd's?

For those of us who don't have a group to be with, maybe we should start a game night or ??

jumpxc
Jan. 16, 2009, 06:25 AM
I hate to break it to you but Southern Pines does not really have a night life. Yes you can go to the local bar or a nice cozy place to eat but that's about it! There is one tack shop in town and that's about it. So while there are fabulous trainers here, great footing and places to ride you won't find much else for nighttime entertainment other than hanging out with friends!

Oh my...I am an old married woman! That was not the kind of night life that I was interested in.

I was thinking more along the lines of a horsey book club night or something like that. I know there are a lot of people that train in winter and don't reside there full time. I need to be much more specific in my posts.:o

LovetoJump - my personal idea of night life when in Southern Pines is finding somewhere to get super yummy food and a glass of wine.....and we talk horse non-stop....how does that sound? :-)

I'm losing track of who will be where when, I'll be down the 20th through 25th if anyone Permanent/Transient/Other would like to get together, we usually end up downtown every night because we're too tired to cook ~ plus, I travel in from a cultural abyss and LOVE the good food.
