I've toyed with this before and gotten various responses, but a year later this guy really needs a job that I just dont have time to provide him with.
"Donkey" is a 12 yo, 17.3h (really) Oldenburg gelding. He is absolutely sound, an a solid, honest, capable, 3'6 horse. He's done the junior hunters, the childrens jumpers, the eqs, the level 3s and level 4s, and is just as sweet and fun as they come. He has a wonderful, fun personality and will follow you like a dog as long as he thinks you might have a cookie. If you give him half a chance and a little bit of a hint as to what you want to jump, he will get you from one side to the other, no questions asked. He REALLY likes his job as a jumping horse (despised his former one as a dressage horse) and will cover your butt if you are kind to him.
Bad news is he is hard, hard, hard to ride. If you cant get up on a forward moving horse and leave it alone and stay out of his mouth, stop reading now and move on to the next horse. He will not tolerate being pulled on at all. If you pull, he goes faster. (and faster, and faster..) If you can let go, he isnt tough.
He is "older" and I do give him bute after he shows (within what he is legally allowed to have at a rated show) and he's had his hocks and a knee injected before and if someone was wanting to show him a lot, this might be something they'd want to do, but he is a sound horse and doesnt require any day to day maintenance.
He goes out in a large herd and is the kind of horse you can turn out with absolutely anything (his best friend is my daughter's 10h pony but he literally can be turned out with aggressive or passive horses and he just kind of minds his own business) but he does like his stall and does want to come inside. He'd probably prefer to have a buddy and will be happiest if you can atleast offer him a few hours of turnout a day.
I will be picky about where he goes and you are going to have to come here and prove to me that you can ride him before I let him go. I think he could easily make a very nice eq horse or jumper for someone who because of the economy cannot afford to pay to buy one but can afford the upkeep. He could do the hunters to with someone who can really leave him alone. He does go around like a hunter for me.
In the interest of full disclosure, he has had tie-back surgery in the last year for a sort of late onset type of throat noise he started making last year. It is gone now, and he suffers absolutely no "affects" from it, but he is supposed to eat hay off the floor and grain from something not terribly high. I've never even heard him cough because of this as they say some horses will.
You can see a video of him here: (this is with me in a 3'6 jumper class about a year ago- sorry that the quality is bad and it kind of cuts out.. have never really been sure why it does!)
