I've toyed with this before and gotten various responses, but a year later this guy really needs a job that I just dont have time to provide him with.

"Donkey" is a 12 yo, 17.3h (really) Oldenburg gelding. He is absolutely sound, an a solid, honest, capable, 3'6 horse. He's done the junior hunters, the childrens jumpers, the eqs, the level 3s and level 4s, and is just as sweet and fun as they come. He has a wonderful, fun personality and will follow you like a dog as long as he thinks you might have a cookie. If you give him half a chance and a little bit of a hint as to what you want to jump, he will get you from one side to the other, no questions asked. He REALLY likes his job as a jumping horse (despised his former one as a dressage horse) and will cover your butt if you are kind to him.

Bad news is he is hard, hard, hard to ride. If you cant get up on a forward moving horse and leave it alone and stay out of his mouth, stop reading now and move on to the next horse. He will not tolerate being pulled on at all. If you pull, he goes faster. (and faster, and faster..) If you can let go, he isnt tough.

He is "older" and I do give him bute after he shows (within what he is legally allowed to have at a rated show) and he's had his hocks and a knee injected before and if someone was wanting to show him a lot, this might be something they'd want to do, but he is a sound horse and doesnt require any day to day maintenance.

He goes out in a large herd and is the kind of horse you can turn out with absolutely anything (his best friend is my daughter's 10h pony but he literally can be turned out with aggressive or passive horses and he just kind of minds his own business) but he does like his stall and does want to come inside. He'd probably prefer to have a buddy and will be happiest if you can atleast offer him a few hours of turnout a day.

I will be picky about where he goes and you are going to have to come here and prove to me that you can ride him before I let him go. I think he could easily make a very nice eq horse or jumper for someone who because of the economy cannot afford to pay to buy one but can afford the upkeep. He could do the hunters to with someone who can really leave him alone. He does go around like a hunter for me.

In the interest of full disclosure, he has had tie-back surgery in the last year for a sort of late onset type of throat noise he started making last year. It is gone now, and he suffers absolutely no "affects" from it, but he is supposed to eat hay off the floor and grain from something not terribly high. I've never even heard him cough because of this as they say some horses will.

You can see a video of him here: (this is with me in a 3'6 jumper class about a year ago- sorry that the quality is bad and it kind of cuts out.. have never really been sure why it does!)

I would LOVE to come try this horse is April/May. I am actually currently riding a horse who is similar to what you describe, and I LOVE her (and I am not a mare person!). I am looking to lease a horse for about 6 months from late april/early may through New England Finals. (October) Please PM me if you think we could be a good match.

Can you shrink him? :D I just lost my 3'6" horse and he sounds lovely, but that's just too big for me.

Yes, Donkey is still available. I have been talking to several people but no one has come to see him yet. Jeez.. Makes it seem like indiana is in the middle of nowhere or something! Haha

Riotex- so sorry to hear you lost your horse. He is every bit of 17.3 and can be intimidating I guess. I like em big though- makes the jumps look smaller. ;)

Indiana is perfect for me, my son would love your horse, but his horse is broken and we have to wait to sell him until he gets better.

Firebug- LOL. I moved here from the southeast- I am WELL AWARE that I am located (according to anyone- even other horse people in my own state!) in the middle of nowhere. My mother tells me so all the time. ;)

Nope- not far from 65 at all.. especially since the horses live in Crown Point and are actually at most probably 4 miles off of 65. I'm willing to let him travel to find the right home. I've talked to people from all over. Lots of good prospects, but still as yet no one has been to see him. :)

I can't believe nobody has come out to see your boy. He sounds fantastic. If I lived closer I'd be out in a sec to see if we were a match. I'd love to have a horse who could help me move to 3'6.
Good luck. You should post some photos. I'd love to see what he looks like.

Hey There,

I have been following your thread on your beautiful gelding and have been sadle waiting to see him get scooped up. I'm so surprised that he's still available and although I'm quite far away I thought I'd at least send a pm to see if he may be suitable or even possible for me.

I am a 26 year old rider who has been working very hard to work in to the professional ranks. I have had the opportunity to work many difficult horses from OTTB's to rehabilitating abused and problem sport horses. Although I have a number of sale horses to ride, I am yet to have that special horse for my forever horse. I am hoping to find a horse that is capable of the bigger jumpers, unfortunatley I would never be able to afford a horse of this caliber.

The biggest obstacle I'm faced with when considering Donkey is that I am from BC Canada (which is a 2 day hauling trip).

Although it's a bit of a long shot to have it all work out to get him home, I couldn'd help but at least contact you to see what might be possible.

I've listed a link to my website which shows many pictures of the facility that we operate out of, and many of our other horses.

Feel free to contact me at
LindsayKern868@hotmail.com or call 250-863-9656 to further discuss Donkey!

Thanks so much!

Lindsay
