View Full Version : UPDATE! TBs - desperate need for homes

Beautiful TBs free to good homes. Located in New York. Need to find homes or the next stop is the slaughter house. 2 yearlings (one filly (stunning and gorgeous) and one colt, 2 beautiful brood mares and one weanling colt. Owner tried committing suicide this morning - he no longer has funds to care for them and is in a financial bind. I am trying here and also trying to find out if adoption places will take them. From what I read about adoption/rescue places it seems that they only get rescues from the auction houses. I am going to try and contact one rescue place that is local and hope they will consider taking at least one. Unfortunately the slaughter house is the very next stop for them and that call will have to be made this week. These horses are gorgeous. The mares have raced and have good temperaments. I already took one colt last month and cannot take any more (already have 2 other horses). This is a very grave and serious situation. Thank you for your help, suggestions and/or interest.

Oh how sad:( Do you have any pics of them? Where in Ny are they located? Are they reg with jc? Can you get there papers if they are? Do you know there breeding? If you can get some more info that would be great.

I would be interested in either the filly or one of the broodmares if someone else was coming notheast and wanted to share a ride to Maine?

I've pointed a couple of rescue people that I know in the direction of this thread. They will probably not be able to place all of these horses, so there is need for COTHers to take what they can.

Who do we contact about these horses? Preferably a phone number.

Thanks for all the PMs and responses here. I have tried emailing everyone back - my wireless connection is a bit funky so I hope my emails went through. I do have pictures of them all. I won't give out my number unless it is through a private email but another number to call for info is 845-297-3953. That is my friend's number who is also helping to find homes for them. She said she didn't mind if her number went public here. Her name is Liz.
I found out that the weanling and the yearlings are not papered but the mares are. The mares are about 5 or 6 years old - sound - very easy to handle and would make great broodmares and/or riding horses. Once again thank you for all the replies and concern. After a year of sudden deaths (the first (in January) was my best friend's only child, he was 7) this was not a note I wanted the year to end on.

I might be able to take one if we can get reasonable shipping down to south GA/ north FL (or Ocala area). Since I have two ridable horses and am keeping my eye out for a young'un that needs a bit of growing up before being backed, I would be most interested in the weanling or yearlings (especially the filly, I'm a mare person!) but wouldn't rule out the mares.
Looking for something that will be 16h+ (though I know there are no guarantees, I need a horse that will take up some leg), that is fairly mellow and confident, and gets along well with other horses.
Please PM me with more info when you have time, and I'll get you my email address for pictures.
Thanks for caring and trying to find homes!

Try contacting Rerun, they take donated horses that are TBS and they have a branch in Fulton Ny..The website is www.rerun.org. They are very nice people, and a reputable rescue and are a 5013C as well.. Good Luck

I'm in the market for a couple of mares to be ET recipients..
I can certainly provide an excellent home for possibly two mares for at least a year and a half. I would never put the mares into a situation where they might be purchased by "the wrong person" after weaning my babies. In fact, I may ask them to carry more ET babies for me.
Let me know if you have one or two good candidates for this.

Judy - the mares would be excellent candidates for this. They are good producers and healthy. As long as they have a good home and get some attention (grooming or carrots!) everyone on this side would be very happy. Let me know if you want pictures. I may go over today and or tomorrow to take more detailed pictures of them but I do have pictures on hand. Thanks.
Grasshopper - you will NOT be disappointed with the chestnut filly. She is a beauty and a gorgeous mover. I took her half brother only because I am not a mare person (I love my momma's boys!). This filly is your typical chestnut filly - I am the Queen! attitude but so sweet to handle. There are some people who are scrambling to put together a syndication for her of some kind. I told them first come first serve. My friend goes to Ocala quiet frequently as he is building a farm and house down there (just got married!) but he cannot move down there yet until his youngest daughter goes off to college next year. Anyway - I am sure he will ship her down and the cost would probably be a TON cheaper than a shipper. If you are truly interested after seeing her pics I will ask him. They are beautifully bred animals and were supposed to go to the track or some kind of racing auction house. This economy is killing us all.
Someone had inquired if there was an adoption fee. The answer is No - we just want them to have good homes with attention. The mares are rideable too.
Also someone inquired about having papers to enter Canada - papers can be obtained but I am not sure how long a passport would take (assuming they need one to enter Canada).
Last night Liz went to care for the horses and there was NO WATER outside for them. We had to buy shavings and hay - not sure how long we can keep on doing this. It is so heartbreaking. The situation may turn out to be so dire that I am asking around for people with trucks and or trailers to offer free shipping (or shipping for the cost of fuel) to anyone who may want one.
We are all pulling together hard on this end to get these horses placed - again many thanks for all the well wishes. They mean so much!
Thanks for all your interests and support.

Just wanted to say that I am in Southern VA, and can help with a leg in the shipping dept. I have a 3 horse slant and would be willing to help transfer these poor things! Hope it helps!

Have you listed these horses on the Free TB list at thehorse.com? The list gets longer and longer, but it seems to get a lot of attention and has rehomed a good number of horses.

Good luck and thanks for your efforts! I sure wish I had unlimited facilities to match my appetite.

I am surprised at this plea --- the TRF has been set up and is in good operation to provide for such a situation.
Please follow this link to get all the information you need.
http://www.trfinc.org/retire/retire_how_to.php
this organization was created to take care of ALL and any TB's needing retirement, homes, etc, for whatever reason, and should always be the first step in placing a horse.
Im sure your owner is well aware of the TRF.

I had NO idea about the trfinc - that such a thing even existed and the owner had no idea either so please don't be surprised at the plea. This is the only place I knew where to go. Not everyone who owns horses knows about every and all organizations - and by threads like this - well this is how we learn about such things. I am going to go on the link now, thank you.
Grits - I am going to also look and post on your link as well. Many thanks for the info - can always use this kind of information to getting the feelers out.

Correction to some information. The mares are 9 or 10 not 5 or 6 as I previously stated. So sorry for the erroneous information.

The last I heard, the requirements to enter the TRF program was a racing history and the papers. The babies do not have papers or a race history, thus are not eligible. I am not quite clear about how the babies could have been slated for a racing auction or for racing and not have papers. There must have been problems for a while. I have crossposted to those that I know in the New York area, praying and working for a good ending for these horses. Thank you for stepping up for them and for those who have offered help.

You are correct - the babies were SUPPOSED to go to a racing auction etc. but the stud fees were never paid. Irresponsible = yes. I guess the investors backed out one by one - with this economy who can blame them. So therefore they do not have papers - finding things out as I go along. At any rate the mares have been raced and are eligible for the TRF. My concern is just to find them homes so they don't wind up at some auction destined to some slaughterhouse or are neglected to the point of starvation.

if you browse through the trf site you will find the listings of associate rescues that could consider the filly and colt. In the meanwhile, you can make application for the 2 mares. I honestly believe in this program and surely of all resources homes for 2 foals can be found -- papers or not.....

a ps. be fair and include on the sales agreement the mares registry and any information you have on bloodlines, breeding, etc when you turn over ownership on the 2 yearlings. -- as you see here how difficult it is for people to find the backgrounds of their newly acquired animals.

This is a good suggestion for some TB's, but its not likely to work out in this case. The TRF is intended to help horses in immediate need leaving the track, not those that have never raced or ones that have been off the track for several years like these broodmares. Also, when I checked with them several years ago, the donation requirement was $2,500. It might be worth it to check with them to see if they have any other suggestions or referrals, but I would be surprised if they would be able to help with these TB's.

Thanks for the info Cammie. TRF was contacted today. We are awaiting a call back. If their requirements are still the same we will ask for some referrals. We have all the pedigrees on teh foals and the mares so people will know what they are getting. We are moving the horses tomorrow to another, cheaper place. Although it will be ALOT cheaper (100 per horse, self care) the facility is MUCH nicer. They were living in a mudpit swampy place with barely any shelter. I am so happy they are being moved. The owner does not use the farm at all so this is will be a nice, small chunk of change for her! This will buy us some time to place these animals. LIke I said I took one of the colts and I am SO not disappointed. I will try and get pics posted to this thread so everyone can take a look at them.

UPDATE: Hoorah! The 3 girls (the 2 Tb mares and the 2 year old chestnut filly) have boarded the trailer a few hours ago to go to their new home in New Jersey! The weanling colt was picked up on Monday to go to his new and loving home!
Thank you to Jen who referred me to Beth! Beth put us in contact with a great shipper for a great price for the mares and I believe her networking was responsible for putting us in touch with the lady from New Jersey. The pictures of her place are beautiful. The shipper will be calling to let us know that the mares arrived safely!
Also thank you to a COTH member who took the weanling! I know he will have a loving home at her place!
We are just awaiting word on the 2 year old colt - I am hoping that a friend who expressed a lot of interest will be taking him! He is very upset right now at losing his gf - the chestnut filly. He was weaned with her and she was all he knew for 2 years! :(
Thank you AGAIN - You guys ROCK!

So glad you found homes for them. I am currently taking horses from the Oaklawn track in Hot Springs Arkansas and it is a huge problem regarding what happens to the horses when they can no longer race.

Deb - it is a terrible problem for racehorses. Poor things. It breaks my heart.
The lady in NJ just emailed pics of the mares this morning - they look like they are in hog heaven! What a blessing this woman is to those mares!
Another update: my friend will be taking the 2 year old colt! yea! So they have all been placed into very good home and I will be able to sleep at night!
Thanks again to all - especially Beth who helped spread the word far and wide!
