Do we have anyone on here in the Waco, Texas area? If so, can you tell me anything about horsey happenings there? Good vets? Riding instructors/trainers (I've got Arabs - one who likes dressage and a western pleasure type horse, too)?

I'm about 1.5 hours away, so probably no help, but they do have some decent H/J shows there. You could try contacting Baylor's equestrian team coach for some recommendations if nobody pops up here.

One plus to Waco is a 45 minute (ish) drive from Legacy Tack! (I'm 2+ hours, and that's the nearest tack shop for me, so 45 minutes would be a dream!)

So you must tell me, what and where is Legacy Tack? :) I would love to be that close to an actual tack store. I went to one in KC this week while I was home visiting family just because I never get to tack stores anymore! :)

And I didn't know Baylor had an equestrian team. I shall go find out more. :)

Not only does Baylor have an equestrian team but they are an NCAA team not just an IHSA team.

There are some hunter/jumper barns in Waco and there used to be a horse trials, Cedarwood, but they closed. I am about an hour or two northwest of Waco.

MeadowCreek Horse Trials is about 30 minutes from Waco.

I'm about 1.5 hours away as well, in Hamilton. I take my massage table on the road and do mainly barrel races and ropings. I've met a fellow vendor at a couple of shows that has Arabs. They have several Arab shows at the Heart of Texas arena every year IIRC. Check their calendar of events to find the next one. She'll be there selling Painted Ponies and may be able to give you the lowdown about Arabian clubs in the area. Tell her Melanie said Hey! and welcome to the area. Lots of stuff to do around here.

Thanks. I am really upset about the move - I don't want to move for a lot of reasons: leaving the custom barn I'm building, leaving the completely redone house, leaving my nieces, being someplace where I don't know anyone and don't have help (I can't drive, having friends and family around who can help is important).

BUT... all of that said, the area looks very pretty in all the pictures I've seen. I like the idea of being away from a huge city (we're in the subburbs of the subburbs of Houston). I also like that Ft. Worth, Austin and College Station are all not far away. And I like not being in the hurricane zone anymore.

I'm not sure when I'll be moving yet -my husband moves up on Feb. 15 so he can start work. I can't move until this place is sold, and it can't go on the market until the rebuilding is finished. I may seriously hurt my contractor as things keep dragging on longer and longer. We were originally supposed to be done by Christmas. THen it was late January, now it is looking like sometime in Feb. *sigh*

Here's a link to the Heart o'Texas coliseum site. We go there for H/J shows a couple of times a year, but it has always looked to me like it is used far more often for western competitions. It looks like they have both a reining show and an Arabian show coming up soon.

Ellen White is the coach at Baylor, and she did own Florian.

Jenn-some of my best moves have been to areas that I moved to simply for a job. You never know about an area until you actually live there for a while. Since you're further inland you don't have to worry about anything but the rain from hurricanes and tropical storms-so drainage will be very important. Waco and Temple have really nice VA hospitals-a great source of jobs, and great for resale too. Of course, any of your friends and relatives that stay behind will want to drop in when the bad weather comes ashore so a place with extra bedrooms or a guest house will be very handy too. Actually I've been considering retiring there because I'm looking for a favorable climate, low taxes, and am tired of watching the weather channel for hurricane paths six months out of the year. The most important thing is finding a great real estate agent and shopping carefully. There should be enough selection for you to find a place that is a good fit for you and your animals (please get a house with a storm cellar or a safe room-whatever I buy from now on will have a safe room). I've looked at the real estate sites and there are some nice places with some really nice farm setups for a decent price (actually I guess they're ranches aren't they?).

I am currently at Baylor for school. Ellen White is the head coach, Trista Armstrong is western. I had my horse out at MCC Highlander Ranch last semster.. I would definitley reccomend it. He is not out there this semester only because we are leasing him to Baylor's team. If you need any other info, just let me know. I'm happy to help!

Thanks. :) A few questions for you ...

Are there many horse events in the area (aside from the Equestrian Team - Don't think they'll let me be on it :)).

Do you know if any of the equestrian team members do any farm sitting? I'm going to be looking for someone once we get moved up there...

Any barns that do dressage or western/reining in the area? (I have one of each :)).

Thanks.. My husband is living up there during the week now and likes Waco so far. I can't wait to get this house finished and then sold so I can move up with him. I may not be wanting to move, but now the decision is made I just want it DONE! :)

Jenn, I just looked at the link to Equine Goddess that Happee posted earlier... their website says, "where reining and dressage meet," so I'd guess the owner participates in both like you. That would probably be a great place to contact for sources in the area.

My cousin's in-laws live in China Springs, in a great little gated horsey community. There are some really beautiful places to have horses near Waco! (Plus, they have a Target there, which makes it better than Palestiine any day... be thankful hubby didn't take a job HERE! Wait, there are no jobs here...)

And Legacy Tack is in Hearne, SE on Highway 6 (going towards heaven... I mean College Station...). It's the former location of VTO before they moved back to Virginia. Great, great place to shop. www.legacytack.com (http://www.legacytack.com)

Target is a big plus. :) We only have a Wal-mart here in Alvin, and since we don't SHOP at Wal-mart, that makes it tough sometimes. :)

And I didn't know about Legacy Tack - thanks. We'll be going down to heaven (aka College Station) often for music and to see friends. Now if the $(%%ing contractor would finish our house RIGHT so we could get it on the market. This is just week 3 of me living here and DH living in Waco and I already HATE it. I hate being stuck at home alone for four days and not seeing another human (probably wouldn't be so bad if I could drive)...

ahh, sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you! I'm sooo sorry. I have been busy and actually accidently forgot about this forum =P. To answer your questions... There are tons of activities at the HOT fairgrounds and stuff, but other than that, not really that much. (I like GSWEC much better when it comes to this lol)
I'm sure there are some girls on the team who would love to farm sit, and i'm also up here if you ever need anything (help, a ride somewhere whatever) :]
And yesss. There are TONS (well, not tons, but more than english lol) of western/reining barns in the area. In fact, i'll probably take a few western lessons in the coming weeks just so I can ride. Just let me know if you need any other info/websites whatever. I'll try to check back more often!
