View Full Version : Does an eggbutt with roller exist in anything larger than 5"???

I am looking (so far in vain) for an eggbutt snaffle with a center roller (copper roller or anything that would encourage a young horse to play with it with his tongue). This horse has a wide mouth - about 5.75 - which so far I have not been able to locate anywhere. The closest I've found has been a Mylar eggbutt comfort snaffle with roller -- but it's available only in a 5" for some reason.

That's tough... I did a little poking around and cannot find what you are looking for but maybe some other options:
http://www.doversaddlery.com/herm-sprenger-kk-ultra-eggbutt-horse-bit/p/X1-01359/cn/1466/
http://www.smartpakequine.com/productclass.aspx?productClassid=6148 (not copper and only goes to 5.5 but you could inquire if they can special order a larger size).
I'd contact a few of the larger vendors and/or local saddle shops and ask them to investigate what they might be able to special order for you. Maybe check draft horse sites and look at UK vendors (they seem to have a wider range of sizes for most things).

Thanks you guys :) I will look into those.
I also spoke with someone at a tack store here and she insisted I try the Korsteel JP plain snaffle D. It's a single jointed bit (I have NEVER put a single jointed bit in this horse's mouth) with curved bars, and she said that she has seen many horses love this bit when a double jointed one was not right.
The reason I want a bit with a roller in the middle is the horse needs something to play with to distract him and keep him from getting "stuck." (so says trainer). And since he has a wide mouth, I need something like this that's at least 5.5 inches.
The tack store lady recommended the JP Korsteel bit anyway since we got on the subject of double vs. single jointed bits. I still would like to find one with a roller though! (I'm off to look at the two suggested above) :)

I ride him right now in this one and the roller rolls around the lozenge!!
But my friend also has this one and I am going to try it too!!
What I like is I have been doing alot of lateral work and boy he thinks about being stick and this keeps loose!!! Nothing like a 3 piece to keep them loose.

Comes in up to size 6.
If you'd like a loose ring, there is this one on Ebay with a roller in a size 6. It's a happy mouth, though:

Thanks... I never viewed those center things on Mylers as rollers... correct me if I'm wrong?
I'm familiar with that happy mouth bit and surprisingly, people who've used it have said the horse tends to find it uncomfortable. Something about the way the pieces are cut/positioned. Haven't tried it myself yet though...

Interesting. I saw that in Dover and didn't realize the center thing is supposed to encourage mouthing. I may check it out, though the one I posted earlier (with the black ball thingy) I'd be interested in hearing some feedback. I'm a bit hesitant to pay Herm Sprenger bit prices though. :o

I know... I couldn't find anything with rollers.
I am not a fan of single links... I got rid of all mine years ago. I find the three piece kinder.

Agreed, however the JP Korsteel (not regular Korsteel) bits are designed specifically to eliminate the nutcracker effect in their single jointed snaffles. That is why I'm interested in trying one (and I have heard good feedback).

The herm sprenger with the black rubber ball I will try this week.
I am very happy with the roller one though. My friend said the rubber ball one is a little more severe or attention getting. Maybe something I am not interested for on the flat --but might be the ticket for jumping!!
Have you ever consider a waterford----- No sticking with this.
I use this for Jumping at shows with this same horse.

Yes, he likes the waterford, I use it with him from time to time. It's not a bit I can use as his daily bit though, after a while he doesn't like it any more.

I switch my waterford out to a 3 piece back and forth.
I normally use this and go back and forth to the waterford

The lozenge is bigger than that of a kk - I mean is wider. I like this one too.
I got this on ebay for like 24.00 !!!!
I think three pieces help them not feel trapped. That being said my hottie has no respect for the show ring in a jumper class with these.
My perfect world would be to have a groom available to switch me before I warmed up over fences!!

Judging by the description, that snaffle bit looks very interesting. Maybe I can find one on Ebay for $24 too! The 5.5" one on the 123tack website is out of stock anyway (which figures).

Hope you find something that works for you. The size makes it a little tougher. If you use the JP, I'd be interested to know how it turns out. I can see the curve softening the nutcracker, but wondering if it would eliminate it. Best wishes.

Yes, according to the reviews, the Dover bit has a roller. I'm not much of a Myler fan generally, but as you pointed out, finding a roller snaffle in that large of a size is a challenge unless you go custom. I don't use roller bits much because I don't like to encourage the horse to play with the bit - in the hunter ring, you don't want to create a "busy mouth" - but that is a personal preference.
I use a variety of happy mouth bits on my horses and haven't had any act like they are uncomfortable yet. In fact, my favorite bit is a flexible happy mouth that isn't jointed at all; the plastic covers a cable so the entire mouthpiece is flexible. But all horses are different; I guess there is no way to know for sure unless you try it.

Yeah those Cupreon bits look really neat. I'd love to try one. If my enormous bit box would only expand so I could fit it in
Yo Woops - guess what I bought the HS WH bit with the roller disc! And guess what, he LOVES it! At least he did yesterday (first day) and first days in any bit can often seem good - something about the newness of the bit. However - I think he may really like it as his expression was better and he seemed to salivate more and carried himself better too :)
I looked at the one with the black ball in the center and it seemed kind of big and unforgiving...something told me he may not like it. For now we're really liking the roller disc one.

He seemed okay and listened really good to half halts.
Right now I am trying to correct thr fact that he travels haunces in on the left side at canter . So I was impressed that as I half halted he didn't not stiff me in the poll. But I will tell you more in 2 days.
To me the first day of a bit is never enough!!!!
