I've just finished defrosting from my morning of stallion shopping and am here to report. I went up to Lexington to look for potential mates for the following mares:
Mer Babe: Talented SW who was 5 3-1-1
Two Reigns: Full sister to GSW
Key Bar Zagor: My upper level eventer
Classy Tigress: Talented young mare that broke her knee this year.
At Lanes End I looked over:
AP Indy: still as spry as ever, cavorting around his pasture in the cold. He's such an old hat he posed like a statue and was really fair personable. Relatively robust, shall we say, but looked the picture of health.
Belong To Me: He really looks like a little Welsh Cobb. A little bit of a sour temperatment and his feet appears a little chipped up. Pretty tied in at the knee and a weaker stifle than I'm looking for.
Rock Hard Ten: What a handsome boy! I'm really interested in him as a sporthorse sire. Stood like a halter horse and bowed his neck as if on command. A very sweet eye and fair cleanlegged. I love this horse!
Pleasant Tap: While I love the temperament he passes on to his progeny, his conformation doesn't do much to wow me. He did have the grooms chasing him all around the pasture though!
Wando: My favorite of the day! I love how he's put together, short enough back, great shoulder, lovely hind end, reasonably clean legged and such a pet! Just wanted to kiss and lick me the whole time. I really do love this guy and he is a Woodman, whose progeny have proved time and again to me their determination and hardknocking abilities.
At Three Chimney's I look over:
Rahy: Showing his age these days. A little gray in the face, not quite the spark I hoped to see in his eye. Physically well cared for if a little undermuscled though.
Big Brown: His feet were wrapped with duct tape, gamgee, and vet wrap but he moved out sound. He seems a little stressed but very affable. A little thin and ribby but I'm sure they'll pork him up. Had a little bit of a confused look in his eye, the poor chap. Though I really am not interested in breeding to him, it was worth a look to pet the derby horse.
Point Given: While he was not thrilled with the cold wind up under his tail, he stopped fussing long enough to get a good look at him. He may have my favorite confirmation though his breeding isn't exactly what I'm looking for. Beautiful shoulder, lovely hind end, great eye.
Flower Alley: What a sweetie! He loved the attention, stood like a statue and really is quite well put together for a hunter, though that's not what I'm breeding for! I think he would throw some nice race horses as well. He just doesn't seem to have had any luck just yet. I'm sure it will come. I did so love his personality though, which is something I really take into account!
Pictures soon!

Technically, Wando isnt a Woodman, he's out of a Woodman mare. He's by Langfuhr.

My god girl, go see Lad's nephew. I love him as a sallion, and he's affordable.

Congaree

Should still be at Adena. And plus that would get you in to see the all new Adena farm, judging by the Bloodhorse article its gorgeous.

Great Stallions! I love Point Given & Rock Hard Ten for their performance as race horses, conformation, spirit, and personality. I have an off-the-track gelding by Langfuhr. He's got the best mind. He'll watch me work with the other horses, and then when I take him out, he's got it all figured out & just does it. Very easy to train & fun to ride. And so very athletic, intelligent & cooperative.

Just as a point of clarification on the mares, Mer Babe was 7-2-0-0 and was an allowance winner, and Two Reigns is a half-sister to Tin Cup Chalice (who is by Crusader Sword).

I broke a Congaree filly last fall and she was lovely... super mover, covered lots of ground with suspension. :) I don't think she's doing all that well as a racehorse, but she could make a great eventer!

Halo: That's why I didn't word it as "Wando is by Woodman". Just wanted to reference his relation and mention that I like that breeding.
Em: Adena wasn't scheduling Stallion visits this week. Boo.
Beaver: You're correct, I meant to type half sister not full sister. She was reasonably successful herself for a small track horse. Mer Babe, however, I'm fairly certain won three starts and only started five times. Thanks for being a super fact checker though!
Last year a broke a couple of Langfuhr that were just dolls! Wouldn't mind having a few myself!

Flower Alley's oldest offspring aren't old enough to race. That's why he hasn't "had any luck yet".

When you say "he is a Woodman" as you did in your first post, it means (in Thoroughbred parlance) that he is by Woodman. You may have meant something else, but it isn't what you said.

In case you're interested in updating your info, here's a link to Mer Babe's pedigree and race record:

Rahy did not have that "spark in the eye"? Do you know who you are looking at, what he has produced, etc:? The fact that he is not a young robust stallion and it is wintertime is why the lack of spark. Holy cow, to just dismiss him like that, sorry I cannot help but stand up for old man. I wish I had been there, I would have told him what a grand old soul he is and a very good horse. Hope you find what you are looking for....

I'm just impressed you have the finances to breed to likes of Rock Hard Ten, And your mares were approved for the Lane's End stallions, They have in the past looked over the pedigree of mares and sent you the stallions list that you are approved to breed to.!:)

Don't worry, Calamber, I saw Rahy last month and he looked terrific and plenty robust. Class all the way, and not the slightest bit impressed by the new boys on the block (Big Brown and Lewis Michael).

Nightlace, what is the pedigree of your Langfuhr gelding? We bred one that would be 5, coming 6, last raced in Ky. early in 07 and I lost track of him.

Sounds like you had a wonderful day of stallion shopping...now that is my idea of shopping too! ;)

I would like to make a comment on your "favorite of the day" Wando: I had the pleasure of working at Schonberg Farm (where Wando was bred and raised) for a number of years and I worked quite a bit with the broodmares. You say that Wando has a a lovely temperament...he comes by that quite honestly. His dam is a sweetheart who could very easily be a child's pet if she wasn't producing good racehorses. Wando is so much like her in his looks too that I was a bit taken aback when I first saw the photo on the Lanes End site. He is more muscular and more masculine, but definitely a momma's boy in the looks department.

I also had the pleasure of knowing both Langfuhr's dam (Sweet Briar Too) and his grand-dam (Prima Babu Gum). Again, Wando's lovely personality comes honestly. Both Prima and Sweet Briar are real pets who proved themselves on the track and then gracefully entered the broodmare band with class and integrity. They are both feminine and gentle yet have an air of aristocracy to them.

I remember Wando as a baby (I left Schonberg Farm when Wando was still a suckling)... Mike Keogh (Wando's trainer) and Gus Schickedanz (Wando's breeder/owner) seemed to know he would be special right from the start. They are horsemen who truely always want the best for their horses and will go to great lengths to ensure their comfort and happiness.

Nice to know that Wando has matured into a lovely adult. Hopefully he will leave a mark on the world.
