View Full Version : Good blankets for Arabian conformation?

Can anyone recommend a brand of turn-out blanket that fits Arabians nicely? My horse has narrowish shoulders, and even with her high withers her blankets all gape around her neck and chest. We're trying something with a higher neckline, but does anyone have any recommendations for keeping this girl's cleavage out of sight?

Thanks!

My Mom uses the high neck Rhinos on her Arabs that had that problem. They work great.

I've had good luck with Rambo/Rhino, and my girl is currently in a Tuff Rider. It gaps just a little (VERY little) at the shoulder, but it doesn't rub (and was a) the only one I could find in her size (68) in a hurry, and b) pretty inexpensive - and has held up very well - 3 winters and only one patch ;)).

I have heard good things about the Schneider's blankets (http://www.sstack.com/jump.jsp?itemID=341&itemType=CATEGORY&path=1%2C3)... I believe they have an adjustable shoulder.

Schneider's blankets with the adjusta-fit are really good... also look for blankets that have the Euro-style neck... they work real well for Arabians.

Most of my friends with Arabians swear by Schneiders. I don't like their fit on my big guys, but the more fitted style seemed to fit the Arabians very well.

Another thumbs up for the Schneider's Adjust-a-fit. Worked a charm on my wide-chested, deep-shouldered, high-headed Morgan. And they aren't too long, like some of the more "horse" sized blankets.

Schneiders. The one Arab I ride for lessons wears a Schneiders.

Ditto the Schneider's. Look at their "Fitted" line, which are designed, as they put it, "not to overwhelm a delicate conformation". The fitted line has the adjustable shoulder and a sloped wither too. Their Euro line is fantastic but tends to be long on the sides--that's a wonderful thing for my Thoroughbred but maybe not a wonderful thing for some smaller Arabs!

Turtlenecks!!! My sister is, well, cheap. And for a couple of years now I have told her to buy a turtleneck for her arab. She's tried many different styles, and they all seem to do the same thing-- gap on the neck and then sit back on the withers. Schneiders were better than other products, but still not perfect. Finally this summer, after me going on and on about the turtlenecks (which I have never used myself for my WB, but just looking at the design of those things it makes total sense why they would work!) she opened up the wallet and bought one.

Best purchase ever. No rubs, no gaps, happy, dry, and warm horse!!! Even when it has rained/snowed a bit, nothing runs down the neck area-- something I can say Schneiders are infamously bad for allowing.

Schneider's, hands down! They're not expensive, and the fitted line is perfect for Arabs - the Euro line is a bit longer on the sides and bigger in the neck and chest. They last forever, too.

Schnieders. No contest. They have been catering specifically to Arabians for as long as I remember-and that is a long time indeed.

I've tried a BUNCH on my full Arab and the best fitting by a mile is the Kensington Smart Blue and Smart Pink Plaid from www.smartpakequine.com (http://www.smartpakequine.com). It is affordable, and the blue one is on it's 3rd season of use with no signs of dying anytime soon. LOVE IT! :D

I love that blanket because it has Thinsulate linining so it is very warm, but very light. Only weighs a few pounds, versus the 25 pound heavyweight blankets, but just as warm.

I've used Schneiders on other horses, but not on this horse. After I found the Kensington, I'm a convert! :) The only thing I have against Schneiders blankets is how ugly they are, and the heavyweights are really heavy. Yeeesh. They are nice quality and fit nice, but I just like nice patterns and bright colors. I like the Thinsulate because the blanket is so light it doesn't press down on the neck or withers.

AT,
I have the Kensington fly sheet in the blue plaid... love, Love, LOVE it... haven't tried their turnout blankets, maybe when the ones I have officially die... I'd love to finally get all my horse clothing matched up :).

These blankets fit Arabians really well (specifically made for Arabians and Morgans): http://www.eqtack.com/dynasty_blankets/fitted_blankets.html

They're really high quality blankets. I've had two for 4 years. My horses have 24x7 turnout in rugged country (not manicured pastures). They really hold up.

I agree with this. I use a Turtleneck blanket on my Morgan and it was totally worth the price. Schneider's were nice quality, but they were too big around the neck, and even those with the adjustable neck ones rubbed his shoulders. The Turtleneck fits him very well, and is very nice quality.

I got a Schneider's -- it fits her beautifully. At last, at last, my horse is not wearing a dress down to her knees. I'll look into the other recommendations too, especially as I can see how rain would run down inside the neck (and I find neck covers to be overkill), but in the meantime, thanks for the Schneider recommendations! I'll watch out for shoulder rubs, but it seems to be pretty roomy in there for her.

Another vote here for Schneider's. They're tough, stay where they're supposed to, and the adjustable shoulder feature is great.

Personally, I've found the Weatherbeeta's with the high necks to fit my Arabs and Morgans best
