Whatever you do, don't buy anything stretchy or bungie unless you want a tooth knocked out. I bought nylon trailer ties with the quick release snaps.

As long as you have the panic snap at one end they will be fine. I agree with Pines4equines. The elastic ties are just plain lethal. OMG, nothing like one of those things busting loose and coming at you or your horse at about 95 mph!

I only use Turtle Snaps trailer ties. They hold well under normal circumstances, but will release under a panic load so the horse doesn't break their neck...horse falls in the trailer, an accident, etc.
Those pretty Baker ties will be covered with snot and crap after just a few hauls, BTW.

Velcro, by Tie Safe are most excellent.
Had a mare go bonkers in the trailer, the velcro tie released, she got out, and with the tag end dangling from her halter, she was easy to catch up.
Love them.
I use the longer, cross-tie one, on the picket line when camping. If the horse gets caught up or tangled, I'd rather have the horse wandering around loose than a broken neck or strangled. Horses usually hang around with other horses in campgrounds.

Could, I suppose; however, my trailer rings are near the roof of the trailer, over the windows nearly and I'm a short person. It's just as easy for me to load a horse with the lead rope over their neck and then clip the trailer tie to the halter, then to tie a rope while standing on my tip-toes.
With a slant load, loading them and closing the divider, then going to the window to clip them is easiest. I could, of course, tie a lead rope and then leave it tied inside the trailer - but that's not much different than using a $8-10 trailer tie.
From a safety standpoint, using the panic snap on the trailer ring, and the clip on the horse - I could untie the horse from outside through the window. With a tied lead rope, that would be much more difficult to quickly undo if the horse got into trouble (fell down or under a divider, or heaven forbid, an accident and the trailer was not upright). So, the velcro ties are really nice because the horse can disconnect themselves without harm, but still have a tag hanging from their halter (if it's still intact).

I went with the velcro ties because I have an undivided stock trailer. I definitely didn't want anything bungie, and with 2 horses in there I don't want to use a lead rope - too much length to entangle somebody if they untie themselves or each other. I also liked the release idea in case they decided to act up and one tried to go around the other or something.

Definitely NO BUNGEE! I have a human friend who lost an eye, a horse friend who got snapped in the neck and was unrideable for 6 months.
This is a great trailer tie: http://www.horse.com/Adjustable-Nylon-Trailer-Tie-BNH61.html
Be sure to put the slip snap at the trailer end. In an emergency, pull it free from the trailer and you have a lead. When a horse is in a panic, it is hard to reach for its face to undo a tie...

Agreed! I've used the velcro ones exclusively for ten years and they're great. Wonderful wonderful wonderful if you have a horse who panics and breaks ties (any common trailer tie WILL break eventually, but these do so predictably, and aren't garbage afterwards) and give peace of mind for good haulers. I use the cross tie size to tie to the outside of my trailer for tacking up and times when I need to leave my horse tied.
I do know people who just tie with their lead rope, but I avoid it (have done it when using other people's trailers though). Its just so much quicker to use a trailer tie than tie a safety knot, adjust the length, etc. Also, I often use a chain lead shank away from home, which obviously isn't any good to tie with.

I am new to horses and learning lots. I love the idea of the velcro trailer ties, but where do you get them?? I have never seen them before but would be very interested in getting this type.
Hoepfully you can point me to the right place!

Google for "Tie Safe Trailer Tie". They are very cool and if you need it exclusively for tying in the trailer, it's a great option.
I wanted the option to tie my horse to the outside of a trailer at shows without him getting away and running around loose on the grounds, so I bought The Clip instead of a velcro trailer tie. Very cool little gadget and it means I can tie my horse inside and outside the trailer safely with a regular lead rope because it will "give" in an emergency:

We use to. Well, my boyfriend use to. But, then we were in a horrible trailering accident. The two horses that were tied with lead ropes were both killed (broken necks). My horse was loose (not tied) and lived with minor injury compared to the magnitude of the wreck.

I can't use the velcro ones in the trailer, my horse learned how to just move his neck in there (without pulling) in a way to get the velcro to come undone so he could piss off the neighbors. I also don't tie with a lead rope as he likes to chew on the loose end, but he doesn't chew the trailer ties. I use just the nylon ones with the quick release at one end and the bull snap at the other.

I use a leadrope, but I attach it to baling twine that is tied to the trailer. That way it will break if there is an accident or (god forbid) I forget to untie him before asking him to back out.....that happened to me once.

Sorry about your accident, that is horrible. Using a trailer tie wouldn't have had any different outcome, tied is tied. Sometimes I think that we just buy way too many gadgets, that's all.

I still tie to the outside of the trailer with those.
I also like the Blocker tie rings. Similar design to "the clip" in that it gives some slack if the horses pull back, so they don't panic. It works wonderfully for my old guy never tied that well, but has become spookier/more likely to panic with age (he can't see or hear well I guess). Unfortunately, my 8yo TB is an idiot (or very smart, depending one how you look at it) and quickly learned a slow, steady pull on the lead rope in the Blocker tie ring will soon mean you're free to walk away, you're not really tied. So, if you don't tie him solidly TO the ring (or make a big knot so the lead can only slide so far) you'll find him walking around the property lead rope in tow. Arrgh.

I do like the others and leave the tie tied to the tie ring and then clip it to the horse, since I'm not very tall either, or at least not tall enough to reach the ring every time.
But I do leave the lead rope on the horse then throw it over his neck, and tie it in a quick release knot under his neck. Hopefully if we are ever in a horrible wreck and he ends up running down the highway if he loses his halter he may still have lead rope. Or not but it doesn't hurt anything.
