I've decided it's getting close to time to replace my boy's cribbing collar. He has a Miracle Collar currently that he has worn for  10+ years (the same one, props to their durability!) This one is just about done, and I'm thinking I may try something else because a) I DREAD the thought of breaking in a new MC (even though I already have one, it was given to me) because last time he was very sore and his jaws swelled up where it put pressure on them; and b) even with his old, broken in one he gets really bad rubs. I've tried any number of different fleeces and padding, nothing seems to make a lot of difference.

Anyway, I've been considering the French style or the plain, wide leather strap. Not a fan of the nutcracker style. He's a pretty confirmed cribber, although he pretty much doesn't even try with the collar on. Thoughts?

The miracle collar is really the only thing that works for my guy. I think I have now tried everything else in the world!!!:)

I have two cribbers and I use the french style. I really prefer them. I didn't like the miracle collar at all and I don't really have to put the french one on that tight...Good luck!

PS: I liked the brand Tory the best. I got another brand which is a cheaper leather, yuck! Also get a fuzzy. What works best for me is the thinnest fuzzy that is fake fleece. Real fleece bulks up too much.

Rusty Dare Schuttz Crib collar. Purchased from Rod's.com around $60. Works like a charm and there is only one stap, nothing over the brow/forehead to rub. It is worth the $.

Good to know! I'd been wondering about that collar for a while - there was a thread on it before, I think, but not much in the way of opinions. Rod's is just a few miles away, so I could go there and look at it, I suppose.

For those of you using the French collars - do you find that they rotate out of position a lot?

I got this one:

Same basic design as a Miracle Collar but the part under the throat is wider and not as long as the Miracle Collar. My new OTTB is able to rotate the Miracle Collar (even when pretty tight) but can't budge this one, and it's 1/4 the price. I broke it in with some neatsfoot oil (the part that prevents the cribbing has a stiff insert in it) and the leather is quite pliable.

Another vote for the leather French collar.

Try the french collar. I tried a Miracle Collar on my cribber, even with fleece it didn't work and rubbed her raw. The french collar is softer and worked well on her (for about a month- time to try something new!)

I got a Tory (I believe) French collar and it worked for maybe a day or two on Clyde. I think I got a horse size, because I have it on the tightest hole, and he cribs with it on. I can definitely tell it's harder for him to crib, but he can still do it, and he does (he's a pretty bad cribber, luckily he doesn't open his mouth when he does it, just presses). I tried wrapping it in vet wrap to give it more padding, but that didn't help.

Miracle collar has to be on WAY too tight for it to work, so that's out. I think my only option is to try a nutcracker style one. I think the leather on the French collar stretched out, so a metal one would probably work. Right now, he has nothing on, and his cribbing is driving me crazy!

I love the French collar. I have found that unlike other collars which work on the premise of causing enough pain to make the horse decide to stop cribbing, the French collar fits comfortably on the horse and seems to make it impossible for the horse to crib. My horse tried a couple of times, and literally couldn't get the gulp of air it takes to crib.

I did have the problem of it rotating out of position, and I rigged it up with foam and vetwrap to make it fit the sides more securely, and now it stays put.

can somone post a picture of a 'french collar' that you guys mention? There are several cribbers in our barn, including my own mare. They all just go in the plain collars, what I call the nutcracker collar, but maybe we're thinking of something different? To be honest, I've never had much luk with the miracle collar...every horse I've tried one on, in order for it to work, it had to be so tight that it caused rubs...

I use this on my horse. I also tried the miracle collar (didn't work out) and the nutcracker (pinched the skin on his neck). This seems to be a really comfortable collar for him, I also use the fleece cover on it.
