Probiotics DURING antibiotic treatment?

Question for the probiotic feeders...I normally give Fastrak as a daily supplement. Right now my aged TB is getting some heavy duty oral and IV antibioics for a fairly serious infection.

Is there any point in giving him his normal probiotics or are they just getting killed off? Should I leave them until we are done with the antibiotics?

Or is there some value in continuing with them during treatment?

I would continue to give it. Just my experience from my horse, but when she was on antibiotics with no probiotic her manure was really runny. Once the probiotic was added in it was back to normal.

Probiotics are given about 2 hours after an antibiotic dosage, to avoid just what you've noted.

I think it's worth continuing. I used probiotics during a doxy treatment b/c the horse just seemed uncomfortable with the doxy, esp. notable when the treatment went into its 3rd and 4th week...

I'd say continue the Fastrack and maybe also add some Stomach Soother. I've got a horse on antibiotics after surgery and he went off his grain for a day or so. Gave him some Stomach Soother and now add it to his grain and he is back to cleaning up his feed. It really seems to help with tummy troubles.

This is a good question that I'm interested in as well. From what I've been reading you want to continue feeding the probiotic during the antibiotic treatment, just not at the exact same time.

I'll add one more question:
Can you feed a probiotic 2 hours BEFORE the antibiotic (i.e. doxy) dose, or should it be after?

When I do antibiotics, I try to dose a pro- and prebiotic as evenly apart from the antib as I can. So, if the antibi is at, say, 8am and 8pm, I *try* to to the pro/pre in the middle of the day, and then last thing at night (as I'm not going to get up at 2am ;)). Or, if things are just hard on the horse, a couple hours after the first dose, a couple before the 2nd, and then a couple after the 2nd.

I was thinking of a stomach soother too - like someone else just posted.

When one of my horses was being treated for an infection, the vet also had me to administer 1/4 of a tube of Ulcer Guard 2X/day to keep his stomach comfortable.

No, it's the other way around ;) If you give them at the same time, the antib's will wipe out a good bit of them.
