Hi Everyone,
Just curious as to how the UB40 offspring are turning out....Anyone have photos or videos of theirs to share? We adore our long yearling Covergirl SCF (UB40 X Wanroij Preferent)....She has a fantastic temperament and three good gaits...Would love to hear about/see others!

karen,
We are so taken with our UB40 colt. I plan to get some footage of him shortly but the weather is horrible at the moment.
Boy can this guy move. Probably the best moving colt we have ever bred. Very very sweet natured. Would definitely breed again to UB.

As a yearling she was THE "ugliest" thing, but she is much better now (thank godness). Super mover as well, and has white mane now :)

Hi Leslie!
Can't wait to see photos of your colt! I would/will breed to UB40 again as well.....Is your colt really tall?? My girl is huge! There is some size behind Covergirl's dam though.....So not sure which side the height and bone came from!

Hi Linda,
LOVELY filly! Congratulations Thanks for the video! It sure looks like UB40 stamps his foals.... Both your filly and mine are very similiar....Long legged and lined, with great suspension and power, and they LOVE to trot!<G> What is the dam's breeding? Thanks for sharing!
Warmly,
Karin

Karen and Linda...both lovely babies!
Our colt was quite a surprise. UB40 was the smallest stallion we had bred this particular mare to (she usually has big foals) so was expecting something smaller and more refined than what she had produced in the past.
This guy is huge ... large head, large shoulders, large chest, large knees, large hocks and the dead give away...big ears! He will take a while before he grows into himself and that was the reason why he didn't go to the keuring as a weaning. It took a while for him to master all his body parts but once he got it together...wow!!!

Both the fillies are beautiful. Just curious, how are their temperaments? I know that UB is supposedly very "hot."

I had a beautiful filly by UB40. Sadly, she suffered a severe colic and had to be put down. I have several pictures on my website www.treadstonefarm.com under Foals "2008" - her name was DayDaula aka Daisy. I have videos on the website as well, or on www.youtube.user/Treadstonefarm

Hi Redmare01,
Thanks for the compliment! Covergirl (UB40 X Wanroij Pref.) actually has a FANTASTIC temperament....In all honesty, her dam is extremely quiet and sweet (although Alpha!<G>), so not sure where she got her mind from....To give you an example.... to make the YouTube video (mentioned above) a couple of weeks ago, I loaded Covergirl onto my trailer in five minutes (first time ever loaded alone, and first time onto a ramp into a regular trailer (she hadn't been anywhere since the ISF Keuring as a foal with her dam in a stock trailer!)). I hauled her to my trainer's indoor , unloaded her, took her in past stalled horses etc. with no spook, turned her loose where she ambled around until we "chased her". She allowed us to chase her for the video, and as soon as we were done, came over and put her head in our chests and waited patiently while we talked for awhile then got back on the trailer first try.... Unloaded at home the same way. What a trooper! She just couldn't have been ANY more cooperative! I would say that Covergirl's temperament is DEFINITELY ammy friendly, and I would have NO reservations selling her to an amateur! If Covergirl is indicative of the kind of minds that UB40 can throw, I am very impressed....I know that the Jazz's (UB's Grandfather) are known to be hot, but the are ALSO known to want to work....I saw Jazz at Den Bosch when he was honored as Horse of the Year. I must say that seeing him and a ringfull of his offspring all piaffing and passaging around the arena was a sight that I will NEVER forget....WOW! From then on, I was a "believer"! I am considering using one of his sons next year, but would breed the right mare to Jazz in a minute!
Anyway, back to UB40.....When he first came over from The Netherlands, I went to INSPO to see him worked several times and was very impressed with him in every way....He was focused, quiet and a great mover. He was very young at the time (4?). Covergirl was the result of my impressions of him.....
FYI, UB40 just had a large number of sons selected for Den Bosch (16?) and I am not surprised! I believe that he is a GREAT asset to North American breeders and I am sure that I will use him again.....
Hope this helps! Feel free to email or call me with any other questions!
Warmly,
Karin

thanks, and Karin, NICE NICE NICE girl, yes, looks like he stamps!. my best friend just bought a UB40 gelding and he is also very similar!
Temperament, on the ground so far, is very good. In a year I will know under saddle. Dam is acutally an dutch approved trakehner mare by Polarmond. A nice, also alpha mare, but bold and NOT in any way difficult or spooky mare.
Yes, and sorry for the loss of Daisy!! those things are always so very sad!!
will perhaps dare to make another movie next summer ;)

Treadstonefarm...so sorry for the loss of your filly. Will you be breeding again to UB40?
As far as temperament...we were careful to bred him to a mare who has the best temperament and rideability. So far this colt, Diesel has been wonderful on the ground.
He is handled daily and is happy to come in leave his buddies in the field, stand in the stall on his own, no calling, easy to lead around the farm. He is very sweet and people friendly.

Thanks for the condolences. Its such a great loss for me, Daisy was really special. She had breathtaking movement, especially the trot. The videos I have of her really don't even do her justice - they were taken as she was going through a growth spurt and she didn't look as supple as she really was.
About her temperament - she was born a real devil! I used to call her "little demon" - she made horrible screaming sounds if I caught her and held her (for the vet for example or just to pet her belly). She pinned her ears at me when she was 2 days old! But at the same time she liked attention and as she got older she became much easier to handle and by the time she was a weanling she was a real sweetie. I would call her stubborn, not necessarily "hot", but very smart (too smart!) and opinionated. But she was always willing to give it a shot and I was always able to convince her to do what I asked. By 5 months of age she did it all, cross-tied, bathed, walked and trotted in hand, picked up her feet, loved brushing, would stand tied for 20-30 min at a time patiently, no drama. (I would tie near the cross-ties while I brushed the other foal)
I would definitely use UB40 again - the improvement on the mare's movement was dramatic. But my mare also was the calmest and frendliest horse on the planet. So I would only use him on a very nice quiet mare. I think he is a real asset to us here in the US!

Karin She was just stunning in person and is turning out even more so as she matures but then you always have the nicest broodmares to consistently produce such nice offspring!!

I have two full siblings(both fillies) by UB40 and out of my Flemmingh x Koopman mare. I am so excited about both of them. Really fantastic movement with a lot of presence. The yearling filly has the easiest temperament ever but so does her mother. The weanling filly is more sensitive but very smart and willing. She was a little shy as a baby but has really come out of her shell lately. She was the easiest horse that I have ever halter broke because she is so smart and sensitive but took longer to accept having her feet held for the farrier although she is fine now. I have high hopes for both of them. I would agree with previous posters that he reliably improves movement and is a good cross for a mare with a good temperament. I will definately use him again.

I'm sure Sam will join the discussion here, but I wanted to point out that the Arab/UB40 colt that she has out of Sonesta's Arab mare was just inspected at the recent GOV inspection in TX and received a Foal of Distinction award. He is to die for. Just gorgeous. I have leased the mare for a foal by Rosenthal for next year and hope I get one even half as nice. If I hadn't already booked Rosenthal, I'd definitely look hard at breeding her back to UB40. That was a VERY good cross.

Here's our little girl (lots of pics)! From birth to 3 weeks old http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150157412690805.283855.328744655804 and I have to say she is crazy sweet. We almost lost her at 3 days old when she got very sick, and needed shots/orals. Despite her first encounters with humans being pokes, prods, and gagging she ADORES people. She calls when she sees me and comes running to me, and follows me every where. I fly sprayed her this weekend and she had absolutely zero reaction, other than wanting to sniff the bottle. WONDERFUL temperment!!

dressage, they look like they are having a blast in that video!!
I've noticed quite a few black UB's...I think ours will be a mahogany type bay like her dam, but we had a light brown colored foal last year that ended up seal brown, so who knows. Our girl also has a skunk tail, and I'm also wondering if she will keep that? Foal coats always confuse me, as to what they will actually end up being.
