I seem to have a penchant for things that are no longer available...
Anyone know where the "Handy Stand" can still be purchased?
http://catalogs.google.com/catalogs?id=qQEkZ2S8OKgC&pg=PA123&lpg=PA123&dq=%22handy+stand%22+saddle+rack&source=bl&ots=In57SOQpOY&sig=VBsalklHI6ieAWAfRss8F7pJLbI&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=2&ct=result
Or even something similar, or a means by which to make something similar?
I would like to get one for the back of my car (hatchback), as I keep my saddle at home. I hate setting it on the pommel on the back seat - this would work nicely, I think.
Thanks!

Can't find that Handy Stand, but how about the three-legged one here:
http://www.shiresaddlery.com/stablegrooming.htm
Since the legs come off, you could easily shorten them to the perfect height for car hauling.

It's really scary sometimes how similar all our horse stuff is
My husband made me #D on that link (the wooden one w/ the box underneath) and it fits great in the back of my CR-V. Is your SO handy? (or are you? I'm not) - my hubby just eyeballed it and made it. For the part that your saddle actually sits on, he nailed a small rubber-bottomed rug (like the size that goes in front of a door).
It turned out great! Now it's sitting in the tack room now, but for a long time it was in the back of my car.

That stand may work, Chocomare.
LDavis - LOL! We HAVE to meet sometime! I was actually looking at the picture and thinking, "Well, if I can't find the Handy Stand, that would work, too. I bet I could make one." So yes, I am handy enough that I could probably make one. But I'm also busy (and sometimes lazy) enough that I would probably end up just buying one!

One of my good friends asked for a 6 gallon gasoline can, the plastic ones,
for Christmas. Her dad was baffled as she had several gas cans. She
explained that she wanted this one to use as a saddle stand for her
English saddle. The handle is raised just enough to suit the pommel
and the shape works for the saddle. And she could put water inside
so she had some conveniently available when she transported her
horse and saddle somewhere. See if that sort would work for you.
Can't beat the price.

In my search attempts for you, I came across this beauty. I believe it would be the creme de la' creme of saddle stands:

I've sent the picture and link to my very talented dad with a wink/wink, nudge/nudge to see if he'll build me one for Christmas. :D

Who was the gal that just used a five gallon plastic paint bucket? the wire handle stabilized it from rolling and she kept grooming supplies in the bucket. I thought that was the best idea yet!

Holy Moly! I sent it to my "adopted" dad, who also happens to be extremely talented in wood-works

I tried that in my tack locker (since my cool stand wouldn't fit in it), and I guess my saddle flaps are too long because the flaps were on the floor before it was sitting all the way on the bucket... maybe it would work for Pattnic though. But I remembered the bucket thing too!

And if he does, you'll ask him if he'll take paying customers, yes?

It's hard to tell exactly how the Handy Stand is constructed from the photo but this seems to be very similar: http://www.easypetstore.com/Stubbs-Saddle-Mate-pr-125524.html
And it comes in colors!

I've wanted one of those forever, but fail to see why a simple molded piece of plastic is $40+ ?

$40 for a plastic thingie to put your saddle on in the car!? Talk about overkill. Go to your nearest tack store. Purchase a horse bucket. Lay it flat side down so that the curved side is facing up. Place saddle on top of bucket. Secure with sandbags, bungees, or whatever other cheap stuff you have handy. Done.

The bucket idea, while awesome, does not work for my saddle (long flap). :(
Sad, as I'm all about cheapness and saving money.
Chocomare, that stand is GORGEOUS! It's gonna have to wait until I have a place to put it, though!
I think I may try my hand at making one like LDavis linked to... I'm sure I could do it for less than it's selling for in Dover, AND it looks nice, too!
PS - The Stubbs one is nice, too, but the $40 for a piece of plastic is what prevented me all these years from buying a Handy Stand sooner. Makes the wood one all the more appealing!

Thought I would bump this one back up again and share my idea.
I was looking through posts for a way to carry a saddle in the back of my SUV that didn't involve spending $100, putting it on the pomel upside down, or resting it on the back of the seat.
Read the great ideas about the gas can and the flat back bucket. Pulled both of these out of my garage to test tonight. Right next to the gas can...I also noticed an old Igloo Playmate cooler. Huh. Whose shape...was...exactly...like...the...shape...of... my...saddle. Huh.
Mine is the old school kind with the release button on the side, like this one:
http://www.target.com/Igloo-Playmate-Armor-26-Can-Cooler/dp/B000YIT02M/sr=1-6/qid=1240875240/ref=sr_1_6/180-9342616-0752839?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=0&index=target&rh=k%3Aplaymate%20cooler&page=1
I don't think one with a release button on top would work as well.
Anyway, hauled them all out to the SUV to try and low and behold...I liked the cooler the best. I have a long flap saddle as well so the bucket was too short. The gas can was tall enough, but seemed too "tippy" (although I didn't have water in it), but the cooler was tall enough, nice and sturdy...wider base...the tree of the saddle is lying nicely along the sides of it with the handle up in the gullet, but not touching it. Perfect!!
Have to haul to a lesson tomorrow - can't wait to see how it does.
And I imagine filling it with ice/water/gatorade/celebratory adult beverages will only add to the stability! :)

Or if the above mentined beverages dont work you can always put your brushes/grooming supplies in it. Mine doesnt work as a cooler antymore but the handle popping open at random moments doesnt bother the brushes a bit!

I have a Stubbs, and would LOVE another, as it's ideal for the saddles I get to restore that are all curled out of shape etc.
It's not even the $40 pricetag--It's worth it, really... but ADD THE $30 ish for shipping, NOW we're talking obscenely expensive... :(
Hmm... the cooler thing would sort of work for me, but I have dressage saddles, I don't think it's tall enough...

I found this. You could probably build it whatever size you need or order one:
