Bonnie's daughter , Anna Lisa , was involved in a serious car accident last night and has suffered 2 broken legs and a serious brain contusion. She has remained unconscious since the Highway Patrol found her . She is in ICU and needs our prayers from the equine community. Anna Lisa is an avid equestrian showing to Grand Prix.

My heart and prayers are going out to you, your daughter, and the rest of your family. Please, please don't give up. I'm an ER Nurse and unfortunately we get traumas like this on a pretty regular basis. With time and prayer, these patients do come around and pull through, although it may seem hopeless at times. Head injuries are funny things, but the brain has an amazing way of healing itself! Some days are harder than others and the waiting game can really take a toll on your emotional state. We're sending you our prayers, hugs, and love.

Anna Lisa is young and strong, and she is an equestrienne - she is a tough cookie! Thinking all the best, strongest hopes and prayers that she will come through this and be back on a horse within a year. Bonnie - I know you are going thru hell right now but please stay strong and positive - your little girl needs you.

Dear Bonnie--
To follow up a little on what LockeMeadows said:
My daughter was given up for brain dead 3 years ago. The only reason she is still alive is that we (her family) wanted to donate her heart and lungs for transplant: she was being kept on life support so her organs would remain viable for a recipient. From Friday (when she was brought in and given 30 minutes of CPR to get heartbeat and breathing going) until around 11 a.m. Sunday, her Dr. was repeatedly telling us "I would understand if you wanted the plug pulled now in order to get some closure and prevent the possibility that she might become like Terry Schiavo. We could still use other organs, just not the heart and lungs." On Sunday, some of my daughter's movements started to appear meaningful, and her Dr. said "I've never been so happy to be wrong in my life!"
My daughter's miraculous recovery has been attributed to her extraordinary level of physical fitness at the time of her injury: she was devoted to her program of 1 hour+, 6 days/week at the gym, mostly working on Cardio. It gives me great hope for your daughter that she is also young and fit.
Despite my experience, I want to tell you that I, just like the others, send my heart out to you, and can't possibly know how you feel. I've been there, and was so overwhelmed emotionally, that I find it hard to identify my own feelings and have had to work hard on my own recovery as well as my daughter's ever since. I hope you have many good people surrounding you, giving you support and trying to make sure that you take as much care of yourself as you can.
The years since my daughter's injury (especially after the first, very difficult year of rehabilitation) have been the happiest in her life. I hope (and jingle) that you and your daughter will someday be able to say the same of hers.

Anna Lisa opened her eyes tonight! She convinced me she recognized me and was able to follow commands. She squeezed my hand and wriggled her toes.... this was enough to cause tears of happiness and several adults to jump up and down for joy! This was a small step but a major accomplishment, all things considered.
If she continues to make progress they will take her off breathing support tomorrow. She needs to be able to respond to commands consistently.... she doesn't even do that when she's not banged up! I'm a little giddy after the suspense of the day... waiting to get some acknowledgement from her that she is still with us. Tonight was a turning point.
It looks more and more promising that she did not go without oxygen long enough to cause permanent brain damage!!!!!!! She aspirated a little bit but the doctors think she will be able to clear it herself once the tubes are out.
Please keep praying for her full recovery. She's as strong as an ox and I know with praying friends and great doctors, she'll be back in no time.
Tomorrow should be another eventful day. She is going to be ill as a hornet when she comes fully awake and discovers her surroundings. I've warned the nurses to take cover.
More tomorrow.
My love and gratitude to you all,
Bonnie

I'm writing this in the wee hours.... it's been a long day. Not much news to report. Anna Lisa is about the same. She wasn't as responsive today, but she did hold up two fingers for the doctor this morning (Saturday).
They have nothing but positive words of encouragement for us. Guarded... put positive. She has to come fully awake, aware and consistently responsive before we can know for sure. But, all the signs are good. Once this happens, they will be able to take her breathing tubes out and get on with setting her broken bones. I'm meeting with the doctors in a couple of hours to go over the latest xrays and most recent tests.
She is in so much pain, I can only imagine what's going on in her head. She can't have too much pain medication because she is very sensitive to it. She had a temp today of 103.7 and has developed pneumonia.... but the doctors tell us this is not uncommon in brain injury patients. They're treating it aggressively and tell us not to be concerned. (!)
My daughter-in-law, Cassi, has a beautiful singing voice. During a quiet time at the Hospital, we turned the lights down low in the hospital room and Cassi very softly sang Christmas carols while my other daughter-in-law and I painted Anna Lisa's toenails and massaged lotion on her unbroken places. Anna Lisa knew we were there and was aware of being loved on.... although she was unable to move or make sounds, she let go and let the tears come. Her heart rate settled into a nice calm rythym.
More tomorrow...
Love,
Bonnie
PS: I've been getting the nicest pictures of Anna Lisa and her horses taken by friends at various horse shows. In a day or two, I'll post a couple of cute ones from this summer at the Hampton Classic.

Yes, as others have mentioned, you must take care of yourself if you are going to continue to be the pillar of the family. Rest.
I lreally liked reading how she responded to singing. I always thought music was a way to reach deep in conscious and sub conscious thought and awareness.
Maybe more music in the form of CD's are not an outrageous idea. Inspirational stuff. Or stuff she likes!

Bonnie, make sure that the physicians culture to find out which bacteria they are treating for the pneumonia. There are 2 types of pneumonia. A fellow worker of mine nearly died last month because the hospital was waiting for her to cough up something before doing the culture. She is only alive today because another co-worker got her son involved who is a pulmonary specialist. He said if they would have waited one more day, she would not have survived.

I was in a bad car accident a few months ago, but luckily I and the other person ended up unharmed. I am so glad your daughter is making such a great recovery. I hadn't been online in awhile and when I came back to see this thread at 12 pages, I of course had to read through the whole thing. I kept hoping to see a positive update, so I'm so happy! SUNDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2008 10:34 PM, CST Today I (Carrie Brackbill) am writing on behalf of Bonnie. On Sunday the breathing tube was removed. Anna's airway is swollen and therefore she had some difficulty breathing. She also was not awake enough to cough for the doctors. She has pneumonia, and they are really watching her to make sure she is coughing up what is in her lungs. Since she was having trouble coughing and had stridor (her airway was swollen) they decided to reintubate her (put her back on the ventilator). She had a very eventful day. However, in the short time the tube was out, she was able to say a word..we think she said "stop" but we aren't 100% sure. She held up 2 fingers for us as well. She is sedated again and back on the breathing machine, probably for the next couple of days. She is still so beautiful, even with all the "stuff" on her. Her sweet niece Grace brought in christmas carols on an ipod so Anna can have music in her room. Her fever came down some today. They have her on a cooling blanket to help with the temperature. The doctor feels like the fever is associated with the brain injury, and has little to do with her pneumonia. They found out she has a very small blood clot in her cephalic vein today, which she is receiving medication for.
We are hopeful each day, and are so grateful to each of you for reaching out! Please continue to pray for her full recovery and pass the word along.
Carrie (for Bonnie)

Sunday, another long day. I appreciate Carrie's kindness in keeping you all updated today. I have to admit I've shed some tears but I'm not losing faith. I know Anna Lisa will be as good as new... maybe even better.... when this is over. I can't begin to tell you how comforting it is to know you are praying for her and wishing her well.
I want to tell you what caused the accident. I am telling you this in the hope that this news may prevent another person from the same fate.
Anna Lisa was text messaging when she came to a curve in the road. She looked up too late to correct. We have pieced this together from her phone records. Her phone went dark at 1:32 AM after transmitting a message mid-sentence; she was found at 5:45 AM. The person she was having a text messaging conversation with sent several texts asking where she was and "what happened to you...?" She lay in the dark, broken and unconscious until someone on their way to work phoned the police to report debris on the road. The police went to investigate and found her in a field. She had gone through a fence, skimmed the side of a tree and the car rolled several times before her door popped open and she was ejected. She was found 40 feet from her car.
I know whatever the subject of the text messages, it wasn't worth this terrible price.
Well.... there it is.... a senseless accident..... a smart girl doing a dumb thing. A hard lesson learned. I hope this story helps someone you love to understand why we tell them not to use their cell phone while driving.
Meanwhile, Anna Lisa was resting comfortaby when I left the hospital an hour ago. I can see I will have to be content with baby steps for now. I'll post more on her progress tomorrow. Please keep praying for her full recovery.
Love,
Bonnie
PS: On a horse related note, here are some outside-the-ring pictures from the Hampton Classic. She left home with two horses and one dog... returned with two horses and two dogs!

Hi Bonnie: Anna Lisa is in our prayers, praying for a speedy recovery. There is nothing like a mother's love to bring healing. Sounds like you have a very special family support group as well. So generous of you to share the details of the accident in that you hope it saves others from a similar fate.
