View Full Version : Places to board around Cobb County, Ga?

There's a chance I might be relocating to the Atlanta area in the near future...it's a very sudden thing and if it happens, it will happen fast. :(

I'm trying not to freak out (yet), but of course a big issue would be finding a place to keep my horse. O wise COTHers, please tell me of the GOOD boarding barns in the area, specifically around Cobb County. Website links would be great.
Thanks!

State Licensed establishments; http://www.kellysolutions.com/ga/equine/

It's a big place - this database is searchable, so have you map close by when you are checking.
Most places have their websites listed so you can check them out.

Just be prepared to pay for it... relatively close to Atlanta board rates can range from $450-$1000+ per month.

It's also best to gauge distance in the Atlanta area in terms of minutes, rather than miles, to account for twisty roads and bad traffic. When I boarded my horse 40 miles away, it took closer to an hour to get there. And when I was living out there, a couple times it took me close to two hours to get to work in the morning.

I now board my horses 60 miles away... in bad traffic it has taken me three hours to get there. With no traffic, it's an hour five. (Had to go that far out to get affordable board that was also quality).

ETA - I should also mention that I specifically wanted pasture board, which is another reason I had to go so far out.

I may see you there!! Although I will be relocating to the Athens area! I'm headed for a trip out there in January on a job/house scout (no horse as of yet!). If you aren't moved by then, I can check out some barns for you while I'm there, if you like.

Ah but Pattnic, I'm currently living in Southeastern NY. Anything less than $600 is CHEAP board!

Fizzyfuzzybuzzy, thanks so much for the offer! I may take you up on it.

I keep swearing I'm not going to tell anyone else, but the southside of ATL is a treasure trove of horse country and the drive ain't bad. I have friends with horses in Palmetto who love it. I don't know the name of the boarding barn, but I'm sure I could find it. Newnan is super and about 35 minutes south of the airport on a good traffic day. Serenbe has a website and they have a beautiful stable in Chattahoochee Hill Country (la dee da) which is about 20 minutes from the airport.

Of course it all depends on where your job is, but the northside is traffic central. Lots of people swear on the eastside, but I did that for awhile and traffic on I-20 into and out of town made me want to poke my eye out.

Best of luck to you if you move!

Wow - a 30 mile radius of Atlanta is quite large. Do you know where, exactly, in Atlanta you might be moving? Any direction, 30 miles from Atlanta, and you'll find boarding barns. Their prices vary for board based on location as well.

You can find pasture board 30 miles SW of Atlanta for $75/month. You can find pasture board 30 miles NW of Atlanta for $175/month, and you can find pasture board (when available) closer to Atlanta for $400/month. That was just a pasture board example. When it comes to full board, expect to pay between $500 and $1200/month.

However, we also have the International Horse Park and a variety of other horse-friendly places.

Chocomare listed the top three choices for horse boarding links. Just make sure that when you ask about the barns, etc. that you ask about licensing with the state as gahorse and Craigslist are notorious for listing non-licensed facilities (unknowingly).

There are, however, some WONDERFUL facilities in our area though.

P.S. Take note of Debbie's words. SW Atlanta is horse country, and there are great deals there. Traffic SUCKS NW of Atlanta (I drive it...or rather crawl it....Mon-Fri).

Debbie's right. Coweta County is lovely and there are plenty of barns to choose from.

Freebird! is a trainer at Shady Creek: http://www.shadycreektrainer.com/ - Great Barn. Low key, mostly adult.

Southwind (http://www.ridesouthwind.com/) in Conyers. I cannot possibly recommend these folks more highly. I know you know how picky I always was about HRH; they are about the only H/J barn in the area that I would have totally trusted to take world class care of him if I had to go away for any reason.

(Note: if you do happen to call them, please don't tell them HRH is gone - I haven't had a chance to tell them yet.)

Cool to think we might be sort-of neighbors though!!

Random but.... Freebird, where did that chestnut and white pinto on your website named "Maverick" come from? He is the spitting, and I mean SPITTING image of a horse I knew and rode in Georgia. Same marking and everything. If it's the same horse, we called him "Cowboy." Wouldn't that be funny if it was the same horse? I entirely lost track of him, even before I moved from GA.

Freebird/Kat is uber busy now at Shady Creek, so rarely gets online. Best thing would be to give her a call. Her good friend owns Maverick and lets Kat use him for lessons. He's a dreamboat!

Based on the age and pictures, I bet it's the same horse. He had a very distinctive habit-- he had pretty much auto lead changes but he did this little tail winding thing leading up to the change-- like he was getting himself all wound up to do it :) He also sometimes would grind his teeth under saddle if you were waiting for your turn to jump and he was bored. He was a funny horse. If it's him, I am really glad he ended up in a nice home. :):)

Maverick is 14 or so, and was bought by N. Graw as a 3 year old from a Pant farm here in Ga - though I have no idea what the name of it was/is. His owner has told me that all the babies by Maverick's sire have the "eyeliner" around their eye, so maybe Cowboy and Mavey are related?

I'm not sure what type of riding you do. I have a cousin who lives in Villa Rica, GA, about a 30 minute drive west of Atlanta on I-20. She has a Andy/Lipp cross and does dressage at Leslie O'Neal Olsen's barn, Willowbrook Equestrian Center. I visited my cousin last December and spent a day riding and hanging out at the barn. I was very impressed--small facility, lots of turnout, and the trainer and her 2 sons seemed very knowledgeable. My cousin loves it and says the trainer has helped her a huge amount with her gelding, who is a tense, spooky type. The trainer's sons also do working western--reining and roping stuff, so there is some variety. I'm not sure about the prices, but my guess is it is not exactly cheap.

Here's the website: http://www.dressage.ws/ If you want my cousin's email, PM me.

Update: looks like it would be the Roswell area. I know NOTHING WHATSOEVER about Ga, but apparently Roswell is a nice place to live? Anybody know anything about the barns in that area?

My head is just spinning, the news hit last night that my father is being transferred there for work, and I have to decide whether to stay in NY or follow my parents to Ga. Either way I'll be moving, so I'm checking all my options. My father likes Roswell, he's been there and has some work friends in that area who love it too. Sooooo...IDK but I have to do more research! Looks like there are jobs available in my field, some right in Roswell, and I've always kinda wanted to live somewhere warm...

Ahhhh I think my brain is going to explode! Whatever happens is going to happen within the next MONTH. :dead:

The area you're describing is the Alpharetta area you hear so much whinging about traffic-wise and cost-wise.

Be prepared for board to be at least as much as you are presently paying, and you'll be dang lucky to get an indoor for that. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but that's the facts. :( You'll really be better off moving south or east of the city if you can. Any chance you can get your own place?

Go here http://www.kellysolutions.com/ga/equine/
and search on the town of Alpharetta and the Counties of North Fulton and Forsyth. Most farms have websites listed where you can have a look at the facilities. There are PLENTY in that area!
Just north of Roswell is a bit nicer for farms (Forsyth Cherokee and Dawson Counties) Your choice of barn will probably depend on your discipline.

Map http://maps.google.com/maps?q=alpharetta%20ga&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=1I7GGIH&um=1&sa=N&tab=wl

As you can see the place is stiff with golf courses !

Thanks, WA, I will pass that info to my parents. Right now they are stuck on "Georgia = cheap" thinking.

Whether I can get my own place or not depends on how much money I can make there, and what rental prices are. Ultimately I think I could, but maybe not right away? No way of knowing yet. :(

Villa Rica and Palmetto are an awfully long way from Roswell.

I don't have any personal experience of this place, but they've been around for 30-plus years and seem like a good barn from their Web site:

http://www.stevehavenstables.com/

Board is quite pricey, though.

I don't know what kind of riding you do (haven't read the whole thread, sorry) but you could contact the Georgia dressage club, here--

http://www.gdcta.org/

--for ads/links/recommendations/leads.

Or contact the Roswell-Alpharetta tack shops; they might know some good boarding barns.

There is nothing "cheap" about Alpharetta!!!!!! I lived there for almost a year and it was ridiculous!!!!!! There are some nice barns there but they are high. Heck I was in a studio apartment (smaller than a 1 bedroom) and was paying 1000 a month! Fortunately my boss paid my rent or I wouldn't have been there, but still!!!!!:eek::eek: The board at her private facility ran about $1200 for the basics.

Traffic on GA-400 is nothing short of horrendous! I lived off of Windward Prky and it took 3 hours to get from Lenox Mall to Windward (I think it is about 20 miles) around 4:30PM

Love the area and would move back in a heartbeat. But I guess I am a sick puppy

What Tx3D said - nothing cheap about that area. That's the high-tech belt, with multimillion-dollar homes and - as someone said further up - golf courses eating up the pastures.

If I personally had to work in Roswell, I would try to live somewhere farther north, like Canton, which is kind of getting to be what Alpharetta *used* to be in terms of horsey life. At least you would miss the worst part of GA 400, because you would not be commuting all the way into the ATL. Time was when Canton was wayyyyyyyyyyyy out in the country. It's now a bedroom community, and last time I was down that way, the condos were going up.

You might ask DMK for some recommendations, I know she's pretty familiar w/ the area. LMH too.

I lived in ATL for 8 years and I never found a better place than Beaver Springs Farm.
http://www.beaverspringfarms.com/Home.html

It was at least an hour drive from where I lived in Sandy Springs, but the care was really good, the facilities are great, and the price was excellent considering blanketing and supplements are included.

I know it's quite a haul from Roswell, but I always like to give Beaver Springs positive recommendations when I can.

It's sort of near a Horsetown too, so you can get your horsey shopping done on your way out there or back.

Roswell used to be lovely, 40-odd years ago. Antebellum mansions (still there, of course); no malls, only one fast-food restaurant (walk-up DQ on the road to Alpharetta).

Barns started disappearing not long after, when the yuppies discovered the beauty and wanted to live in it, which of course always wipes out the beauty they come for.

I barely recognized the place, last time I drove through there, some 7 years ago. Landmarks had changed so much I nearly got lost, coming down what was once a familiar road, from north Georgia.

Still, if I could, I'd move there in a heartbeat (if I could afford to live there!).

There is no way that I would try a commute from Roswell to a barn on the south side of Atlanta this day and age. Even on Sunday afternoons the traffic is horrendous; rush hour seemed 24/7 last time I lived in Atlanta.

If you can find a good and affordable barn near Roswell, go for it!

But Georgia (especially greater Atlanta, which now takes up -- what? -- a dozen counties?) is NOT cheap!!! (Sorry to say).

Oh, and unless things have changed there, people moving from up north often find they can't get out and drive after a snowstorm, as roads close, and unless Atlanta's now got road crews and sand trucks, things just close down. Although the electricity didn't go off there as much as it does other places in the south when it snows. And Atlanta's never been a "southern" city in the way a lot of other cities in the south have been and still are. Totally different mindset.

I would love to live in Roswell.

Phew! Good luck finding reasonable safe board in Roswell, Georgia. Chocomare's links are still your best bet. You're looking to pay a pretty penny for board in Roswell (as opposed to other Georgia areas):

Some examples:

$750/mth
$900-$1300/mth

Keep in mind that some places in that area also have waiting lists.

No no no... east Cobb Stables is NOT a good bet... its on an INCREDIBLY busy 4-lane road near what my hubby and I like to call "Commercial Wonderland".... I know nothing about the place, so I'm not knocking the establichment, its just not a location I'd like for horses. Back in 1983 when my fmaily moved to Georgia, it seemed like an OK enough place for a barn. Nowadays though... I wouldnt be comfortable boarding a horse that close to that busy a road.

Woodstock/Canton isnt far from where Roswell "technically" starts:... and it will be, in general, less than boarding in the Alpharetta area. So depending on where in Roswell you are, you could save big money by boarding in woodstock/canton/hickory flat area for just a short drive (maybe 10 miles?), v/s practically being able to walk to your barn but paying out the nose for it. :)

I just want to throw my 2 cents in! :) The area I am looking at relocating to has had nothing but high praise from all who I've asked about. Athens area is supposedly lovely (I'll let you know in a month!) and the surrounding area is very reasonable without becoming scary backwoods type places. Athens main attraction is UGA, and my biology teacher is from there, says it's got a great night life, music, all the good things a college town should! Perhaps mom and dad could be talked into moving slightly more south and east?

Athens main attraction is UGA, and my biology teacher is from there, says it's got a great night life, music, all the good things a college town should! Perhaps mom and dad could be talked into moving slightly more south and east?

Hah - only if they want to spend 4-6 hours a day on the road. I actually did that, commuting from the ATH to the ATL, for about 15 years, b/c it was the only way I could afford to have a horse; but honestly nowadays out there, rent and board are only *slightly* less than closer in. You *might* find an $800 a month condo and you *might* find $450 a month board, but anything barn-wise that isn't going to run you into a nervous breakdown IS going to run you $600.

Yellowhouse is a good place if your intrested I'll get their number but they do not have a website and its about 1000.00 a month to board there. Its amazing and beautiful and soooo clean. They have an outdoor dressage arena and a covered h/j arena, they have showers and laundry rooms that are heated and a/c, they even use the vacuum poop pickup in the barn multiple times a day to pick up everything. Hell its almost as clean as my house. lol

my friend runs beaver springs. i can give you her contact info if needed. also i lived in roswell for 13 yrs. and had my horses at a private dressage farm. not sure if she is still boarding or if it is still there. another friend has a farm(hunter/jumper) nice laidback place with adults and kids, in canton. dreamland farms, her name is lea ann orr. can also give her contact info as well. it is going to be pricey in the roswell area, and when i left there was not many farms left, not many nice farms in cobb either, if i remember right. and oh my god, the traffic on ga-400 is going to have you pulling your hair out. just too many damn people in a small area. i have another friend that has a lovely farm in conyers. eventing farm, nice barn, covered arena, good care, loads of room to hack or trail ride.
montclair stables, name- nikki is the owner. can give contact info if needed. good luck on your move. i could not stand the traffic and the way the farms were dissapearing, so i left and came back to horse country.

Couple of questions for the original poster

How far are you willing to drive?

Any specific discipline?

Are you looking for an indoor arena?

Is turn out on "real" pasture important? (if so you may have to drive a little north)

I'm in Woodstock (Cherokee County) which butts up to N. Cobb County. There are plenty of back roads from northern Cobb to the "horsey" area. Several barns along Arnold Mill Rd, Falcon Ridge, GreenAcres, Cedar Crest. Lots of barns in the area between North Roswell/N Cobb and Hwy 140.

I board about 28 miles north of my house, up in the Canton/Cumming area. Takes me about 35 minutes to get to the barn. But it's worth it for the turn out and pasture.

Our home is on the Cobb County/Cherokee County border.

Please be aware that there are MANY fly-by-night/unsafe barns in that area, and there are also plenty of "everyone knows everyone" in this area....and not in the positive way.

What TYPE of facility are you looking for? How much are you willing to spend?

Those would help, and I could definitely give you names of QUALITY (trustworthy and safe, too) boarding barns in this area.

Cobb county is also a $$$$ horsey hot spot.

On the not so negative side, there are plenty of quality boarding barns in this area with more than reasonable pricing for great facilities, too :)

What about Paulding County? I know it's more convenient to West Cobb than East Cobb but the boarding is cheaper.

I guess that depends on where exactly they move. The OP said Roswell then Cobb...so wherever they are looking to move may be closer to the Roswell/Marietta area. Paulding would be a drive from there.

Is your dad moving for a job? Or just moving south?

Roswell used to be in Cobb County, long ago.

But it sounds to me as if he really isn't researching this move as well as he might, if he thinks that Roswell is in Cobb County this century. (No offense to him; it's just that a move to such a distant place really requires a lot of research.) Kudos to you for knowing where Roswell is!!!

Yes, Georgia counties are pretty small for the size of the state (largest state east of the Mississippi in land area).

In defense of my dad, this all came up less than 3 days ago, in the form of a job offer...so, not much time to research. He's taking it, and my parents are moving down as soon as they can sell this house. Might take awhile, might not; and in the meantime, I have to decide if I'm staying or going. Either way I will have to find my own place to live.

I ride H/J but I'm not a discipline snob. I'd gladly board at a WP barn if the care was good. ;) I'm not super picky, all I want are safe facilities, knowledgeable staff, someplace to ride, and individual turnout for my anti-social horse. I need all this for $450/mo. or so.

Dad's new job is in Kennesaw. If I move down, I'd like to be within approx. 30 mins driving distance of there.

Go north from Kennesaw up into Acworth or Bartow county. You can get full and partial board up there at great facilities for $400 month or so. If you stick Kennesaw and south, you'll be paying quite a bit more than that.

Oh, and the people at Horsetown-Marietta are AWESOME! They will not pressure you into buying anything, will leave you alone when you say "just looking," and will talk horses with you. They are the ones that smiled and snickered when Andrew hopped up on the English saddle in [almost] perfect form.

Wow. :( I feel for your dad. Quick-decision time, long distance, yuck. That is a huge move to make.

But as for Kennesaw, wow! :) As ChocoMare and HydroPHILE said, Cobb and Bartow Counties. Maybe Cherokee too, and Paulding, as Glimmerling said. Kennesaw used to be way out in the middle of nowhere when I was a kid, nothing there but the battlefield site, but now it's just another bedroom community.

If the company gives your parents an apartment or something to live in 'til they find a house, you could go with them and look around before making up your mind.

Georgia is gonna be a BIG change from NY. (A change for the better, of course, but a change.) ;)

I hope you find a good barn! The only one I know anything at all about, that I posted previously, is about 30 miles, not minutes, from Kennesaw.

My friend lives in Kennesaw and boards at Moonlight Stables. They cater to all breeds and types of riding. They have 2 or 3 rings with jumps, large pastures and trrails. They do full board, which I think is 550.00 or 600.00 and pasture board 250.00 or 300.00. I am not sure of the prices but they are around those. My friend LOVES it there. I have been to visit a few times and it is clean, friendly and safe. Depending on where you move in Kennesaw it is 15-30 minutes. Call them at 770-443-7475

Foxbury Farms on Williams Rd in Dallas is a nice facility. It is just down from my place, and is beautiful. It is not far from Cobb County or Bartow County.
Dry Creek Stables on 113 in Taylorsville is further out, but still pretty, and reasonable in terms of distance.

OH MY STARS, that place is beautiful. It is about 10 minutes from my house, but way too rich for my blood. Absolutely splendiforous.

I forgot about 3 Bears Farm too, on Paga Mine Rd in Emerson, or Greystone Stables (I think that is the name) over on Puckett Rd in Emerson. That would put you just 4 exits up from the mall and Kennesaw.
