So for christmas I am surprising my trainer with a portrait of her horse. I need help choosing. It will be an 8 x 10 do you think that is big enough?

That's a lovely idea.

My vote is for #3

I vote #1 or #2 Both show the cute character of the horse. The others are just head shots almost emotionless. You can definitely tell the horse has a heart... and it is best expressed in 1 and 2.
I think that the background fades away in number one. It really isn't important.... the horse is! Great pictures by the way!

I like one. Can you dodge or burn out the background just a little? I think that one is the nicest :)

8 x 10 is a good size too. If she mats with a gallery or museum mat you'll be right up to a good wall size or she can stay small for the desk or office

I like number 1 the best. I also agree with the commentary on the background for it though. I don't know a whole lot about photo enhancement, but is there a way to sharpen the fence, and soften the treeline? Maybe someone with a photography background (the original photographer?) could help you clean it up a touch?

#3, then #1
maybe do both as a combination?
It would make a nice collage.

Is the horse called Maui?

My vote is on #1.. the others are slightly back lit and you loose the detail on the horse. It is possible to fix however if you are experienced with photoshop

I might also suggest a few little edits. I did this very roughly and the image size is small so it can be done better. I just uploaded it to show you possibilities. let me know if this offends a copyright law of any sort. I am not claiming the original picture as my own in any way

The first one just removes the water bucket between his legs that is somewhat unsightly

This 2nd one does a slight color edit

I have to say my favorite is number 2, I just love that one - it shows a ton of personality and sort of has a messy look with his forelock and tail going every which way which shows even more personality. I just love that one!!! My second choice would be number 4.

tbracer65
Dec. 10, 2008, 11:17 PM
I like the first one also -- would much rather have a whole body shot than a head shot. BUT..... why don't you do a bigger picture of the #1 & then in the corner put a headshot in a smaller size....like a collage? I got that the last time we had family pics done & it came out really really nice.

I like #3, and #1 second because of the drab background and the blurry legs. I liked Juneberry's color edit of #1, but it still has blurry legs. I like the idea of #1 with the head shots imposed in the bottom corners.

#4. . . love the contemplative look on his face. He has a nice eye.

Juneberry

I wouldn't care to much about the blury legs, it shows he's in motion. I think it conveys more energy than a horse pictured "frozen" in motion.

One and three, though really.

Take the advise on the editing! It would be nice to get the waterer out. :)

Depends on if she wants a picture of her horse with it's tail straight up in the air.

And it also depends on her discipline.

For a trainer that is into dressage type of look then any picture of a horse running around with it's head and tail in the air probably won't do.

I'd want #3.

The other headshot is nice as well but a little dull.

Well I still like # 2........as it is at unusual angle...it is striking and different from your normal horse pictures.........I think of the tail up as the horse being excited and energized.

Personally I like 4. What the trainer will like best really depends on what breed the horse is and what he does for a living. In 2 and 3 he looks like an arab. In four he looks like a tb.
