Thank you for posting this link! I am hoping we can use this contest to help us raise awareness about horses in the USA.

And our guys would look great in a new barn. LOL :D

There are many great shelters and rescues deserving of a makeover, we are very lucky to be in the running. The Top 20 will go onto an American Idol type finals, with the entire country voting to see who wins the makeover. All Top 20 get a donation to their shelter!

Have a very happy day!

Hi There
I just signed in as I wanted folks to know I volunteer at Angel Acres in Glenville, Pa just over the Md line. Currently we are operating out of 3 satellite farms- one in Gettysburg, Pa and one in Monkton, Md (at Camelot Farm) and the main farm in Glenville.
Jo Deibel, the founder director, works tirelessly to save TBs and we are really hoping folks will take time to please sign up on www.zootoo.com and put Angel Acre in as your charity and help us try to win the million dollar makeover. Her farm desperately needs it! Please go to our website www.saveahorsenow.com to check out how to get started. Zoo too is a family friendly fun site. I was on there last night doing several product reviews for my horse feed, wraplast, you name it- I post reviews so we can get more points toward the makeover as well as videos and photos.. We have a little more than 90 days to go. If we are in the top 10 then they will consider us for the makeover. We are a small horse rescue (the only horse one in the top 10) and are at a real disadvantage. You see they give the animal shelters points every time they adopt out dogs/cats!! The ratio of dog/cat adoptions vs our adoptions are huge! They receive points for their adoptions. So folks would you please help us???BTW Angel Acres is a 501 c 3 charity. We rescued a horse on monday at New Holland out of the kill pen in memory of Wanderin Boy (Nick Zito's horse that was euthanized at Aqueduct a few weeks ago- remember he was 2nd to Curlin?)
Many thanks- Fran in MD

www.Zootoo.com is really easy to sign up!! I actually enjoy doing product reviews for points- today I reviewed Bigeloil, and a few days ago I did a review on my favorite book, Hunter Seat Equitation by George Morris, answered a few horse questions, and commented on some animal news items.. plus posted a few photos of my muddy horses and guess what? All the points go towards Angel Acres to win the Million $ Makeover!!
It costs you nothing but a few minutes of your time...
and helps some very needy TB's- including our newest TB "Chief" who was saved on Monday out of the killpen at New Holland.. for more info you can go to www.wjz.com - click on pets to see the Angel Acres :winkgrin:story that aired last night on the 6pm newscast.

Here's my question:
If a charity gets major renovations done on their facility, but they do not own that facility [I have no idea who owns the Angel Acres site that they intend to improve], and then the charity/rescue goes bust.... those improvements do/could benefit the, perhaps private, owner of the property.
That has happened on several occasions with charities who live on rented properties or who provide improvements to a property owned by a principal member of the charity [ie the President or member of the BOD].
I'm not sure how I feel about it....

angelacres

Hi Angela,

That is a good question! I hadnt thought of that, but I am sure the gentleman who is running the contest has. I also am wondering if we will (HA, talk about positive thinking lol) have to sign something that says...uh, if you guys go to hell in hand basket we want our stuff back...lol...Which we are very willing to do, as we are an above-board, well run organization that works non-stop to help save slaughter bound horses.

We (my husband and myself own the property) lease the property and barns and outbuildings to the rescue for $1 per year. If and when I decide to stop rescuing (which will probably be never or when they dont need us anymore) I must GIVE all of the things that were given to us to a like kind organization. All blankets, tractors, trucks (not that any were given yet, but there that wishfull thinking again!) saddles, etc must be given to a like kind org if and when we stop functioning.

Suppose someones donates a farm to us (wink, wink) and we use it for 40 years, keep it in tip top shape, improve the property, write grants to get funds to improve it, fundraise for buildings etc. even if we spent every last nickel we personally had on it, we wouldnt own it. And if and when the organization dissolves or ceases to exist for any reason we must GIVE the property to another like kind organization.

How it will work with this, I have no idea...I just know its a great thing to get awareness out about the need for animals shelters, of all kinds, and to help us help the horses even more than we already do, should be lucky enough to win.

You know, I am going to go and write to zootoo and find out!

Thank you for the great question and have a happy day!

Jo :)

Jo, your reply to Angela is right on. Having been involved with a couple 501(c)3 organizations over the past two decades, it is very clear in the by-laws and other legal documents that no individuals profit should the organization go belly-up. I think it's a good idea for you to contact ZooToo and get it straight from the horse's mouth if only to assuage any nay sayers.

I'm going to visit ZooToo right now! The horses need AAHHR to be successful. Just one more way for a horse rescue to receive national attention... a well-deserved way to advertise the plight of slaughter-bound horses.

You get my vote Jo! Keep up the great work!!!

Exactly, so say a rescue wins, like last years winner of the Zootoo contest, and they do a makeover or even build a whole new facility as last years winner appears to have done, and it's not a property owned by the rescue, but by a principal of the rescue... what happens to that made over or new structure when/if the rescues ceases to exist?
While you can move a madeover/new barn [or fencing, run in sheds, etc], it's not exactly easy.

BeverlyAStrauss

I would think there must be some precedent, I am sure not all rescue facilities own their own property.........Jo, I can see you have given this some thought- good to plan ahead- better to figure it out now, everyone will benefit from the learning curve! maybe even Zootoo!

I had the privilege of meeting Jo and Patty from Angel Acres rescue. My family and I drove 3 1/2 hours to Angel Acres this past weekend. I've been a supporter of the rescue and wanted to meet the horses and Jo and Patty in person. This rescue is wonderful. They save horses bound for slaughter. Everyone of the horses at the rescue is very well taken care of. They all looked great and very happy. I could see in there eyes they felt loved. When I met Jo and Patty I knew right away they both have huge hearts. They work very hard and long hours for those horses. They were very warm and friendly to me and my family. I encourage anyone looking to support a rescue to look into Angel Acres. Jo and Patty keep me updated on the horses and send out a newsletter which features pictures and stories. They even send me personal thank yous every time I donate. Thank you Jo and Patty for dedicating your lives to horses in need of help.

It sounds like with all the support they have they have to win this as long as the support keeps growing. With the people in this forum there is a really excellent chance to be in first place and take it all home for the horses.

I think the navigation is very confusing and difficult too and worse yet, the one thing I can figure out is uploading photos so I try to do that and that last time I couldn't get them to upload.

Hi,

The site can be a bit confusing, but I wonder if its that way because they are giving away $1 million dollars and we have to really work for it?! LOL!!

I think once you get the hang of it, its WAY cool...I made it to zoomaster, I cant believe it!

The contest, even if we dont win, will do so much to help us get the word out about horse rescue and hopefully put a spotlight on horses!

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

At the same time you share photos and stories you can help Angel Acres win the barn makeover or anything in between. Wherever they place as long as they place they will benefit or should I say the horses will. :D

we need them today...

This is the last day of 2008 and we got in a starvation case, we will be posting pics soon on our blog and web site.

We are going to call this starving 18 year old thoroughbred, Baby New Year, because at Angel Acres...this mare is going to get a new lease on life.

She is barely a 2 on the scale and is still as sweet and kind as can be. We found out tonight that she had a foal in 2006...nice...

Thank you to everyone who is keeping us in the running for the Makeover Contest.

Happy New Year!!!

Jo, so thrilled to see that you're still in the running for this much needed makeover for Angel Acres... for all those wonderful, needy horses that you and Patty rescue and care for until they're placed in suitable new homes.

Let's keep this thread going on behalf of all the horses. When Angel Acres, the only horse adoption/rescue program in the top ten, makes it to the finals it will bring much needed attention to the plight of the horse during these tough economic times.

I hate to be a pain but without your help they can't succeed. But COTH has some of the best people and I know that the people here can make this happen. Already there is a huge increase in points because of COTHers.

Angel Acres is worth the effort because they help many horses and they are the only horse rescue in the running for this contest. We need to help horses as well as small animals. I do both so I see this as an opportunity to gain more support for horse welfare.

Please help. Help Angel Acres score points and win some help and not just for their rescue but for horses everywhere.

Jo :)
I had asked what would happen if you won and made capital improvements to your property that you own and lease to your rescue for $1.
You said you would contact the contest people and ask.

Hi Angela,

I have no idea...I emailed them and asked the question and I got a "we will get back to you in 3 business days"...and that was a week or two ago.

I did read the contest rules...and you have to be on a lease until 2011 and there are other rules and restrictions...here is the link...

ANGEL ACRES NEEDS YOUR HELP!

We appreciate your help!

Greetings!

WE NEED YOUR HELP WITH THE ZOOTOO.COM CONTEST!

Our points goal for Sunday is 5000 points, we can do it!!!!!

We have 326 affiliates so far and with everyones support and help we have been able to keep in the Top 20 with the bigger animal shelters! The other shelters we are in 7th place between have 1800 (6th place) and 1400 (8th place) supporters, respectively. We need everyone to post pics, post videos, write reviews...etc....we have come so far...our lil ole horse rescue really is hanging in with the "big boys" purely because of you!

Now with the end of the contest coming near the other shelters are pushing for points...sooooo we are not above begging, pleading or giving up Jo's first born (he is 21 and works well with others) lol...whatever it takes to get those points and win a shot at the makeover for our velvet-nosed gang!

I know this might sound redundant, but If everyone posts just two pictures, does a review and comments on news, thats over 9000 points, which we desperately need to stay in the running! As they say...were in the home stretch...so nows the time to give er allllll shes got (sorry, channelling Star Trek here!)

We appreciate your help so very much! If you havent signed up already and want to help us stay in the contest please click here: http://www.zootoo.com/myzootoo/

Remember ALL Top 20 Finalists get a cash donation for their shelter!

WE CAN DO IT!! WOO HOO!!!

Okay, when you log into zootoo, go to your zootoo, and you will see your photo (if you uploaded one) and a fishbowl showing your current points. If you click on the fishbowl, it should give you a list of items that you can do in zootoo to earn points. Like uploading photos, playing Pet Wars, putting in comments on products, commenting on News items, putting in journal entries. It does limit the points to so many activities per day.

I have to add, it is not the most user friendly or intuitive site, so it takes some time to find where the buttons are to do things. I have also hit several technical glitches while in there (some application that makes IE run slowly in the news comment section for one) and then when I cancel it, I get java script errors after that. So I have to log off, shut the browser, and bring it back up, and log back in.

My favorite is the pet wars...You can do them every day, 5 for points, then the rest are just for fun.

You can do the pics and comments and stuff like 5 per day and then they stop totalling new points till like midnight then the clock starts again.

Someone said to click on the fishbowl...I had forgotten about that...thats a great way to see what we can do each day.

I am so happy that peopler are participating...we got 5000 points just last night and I think we now have our 350th person!! WOO HOOO! Nowhere near the 1800 of the gang in front of us...be we are holding on...yea!!!

Right now I'm on my third photo that I'm uploading and the first one took so long I left, made lunch and came back, lol and it finally uploaded. The second one was a little quicker and so I'm going for 3. I load my horses photos in there. Leo, Orion, Teddy and Nomad and my many cats and dog. Nomad is deceased but I put him in anyway and his cat Connie. I also have Sammy my Yorkie and my last dog who is gone but I still like to see her photo. I don't let go of my pets, ever. They stay in my head forever and so do my foster pets and horses that have just stayed with me or I helped the owner sell them or a rescue foster them. LOL, I am so pathetic.

Like I said - every day, take 5 min, do 5 pet wars (takes all of 15 seconds) and answer a question - that's 9 points right there. If 100 of us do that that's 900 points a day - and there are way more than 100 of us there!

One trick is to make a smaller copy of your photo on your PC before trying to upload it. Microsoft Office Picture manager has the option to resize it to something smaller for web postings.

My zip code is 17329 and my friends is 21053, I use it to search for rescues/shelters I have been to around the country.

I also use the product browser to search for products to review. I just type in horse and get like a ton of stuff!!

Hi!

We wont catch the group ahead, they have like 1800 people helping them, but we can stay in the Top 10...if we do, we will get (I think) a donation of $10,000 and a chance at the makeover. The winner of the makeover is chosen from the Top 20 finalists and people judge and vote for their favorite...like The American Idol style finals!! WOOHOOO!!

THanks so much for helping us!!!

Hi There!! I just wanted to drop you a few zoo too tips.. I have been banging away since Jo started ... first of all I go brain dead unless I keep a list handy. To max out on points you need to do the following [B]daily:
1. Pet Wars (pick minimum of 5 photos)
2. Journal entries- do 2 (2 or 3 sentences about anything- I always talk re my horse)
3. Download 3 videos (the Flip video cameras are awesome for this. I shoot 10 videos at a time and upload of my horse or cats)
4. Download 5 photos of your pet.
5. Answer one question (I pick easy open ended ones ie Entertainment.) I think today's was "Are you going to watch the super bowl?"
6. Product review- do 3. I can never think of products I use so I keep my Dover catalog handy..Also Horse Books is another great category- horse magazines- I just wrote recently one on the Chronicle of the horse..horse blankets by brand- Rambo anyone.. glueon shoes- pitch fork, bucket etc. all count!!
Thank you all again for helping the horses at Angel Acres-

I sent invitations to people, and my daughter in law said she would invite her freinds when she joins. Just getting people to sign up is the biggest points drive. 50 points each person that signs up. That's huge and easy. The only thing is that you have to invite them to join through the web site so if people give us their email addresses we can get them signed up that way and take full advantage of their joining.

Thanks for the compliments.. I am very analytical re this - I print out my sheet and check off what I have done. The tough part is thinking up things to review. We all have been in horses so long I have no idea who makes Biozide- I just grab the jar.. but my cheat sheet really helps- plus I flip through my horse catalogs to get ideas..here are a few more- doxcycline, Thyro-L (my pony has cushings) Pergolide, stirrup leathers, stirrups, chain lead shank, Horseman's dream, Happy Mouth Bits, "My Guy Barbaro" book by Edgar Prado, Seabiscuit the book, THe Horse Magazine, ..I can speed through if I have products in my mind.. I hit post a new product button, the category and the product comes up if it has any review. I agree tho the site is tough to manuver and they can be slow!! Here is my sheet again..

Hi Zoo Tooers!!
Today's ideas for product reviews include: Baker Blankets, Platinum Performance, rubbing alcohol, hoof dressing, snaffle bit, stall gates with a yoke, salt block holders, automatic waterers (Nelson and Mirafount are 2 kinds)
BTW if I don't know who makes the product I leave it blank...

The quickest way to do a product review is:
1. Go to orange banner and select Pet Products
2. then click product browser..
3.Look slightly to the right of center and you will see a Blue Box that says "ADD A PRODUCT"
Click that.
4. Enter the product name - ie Biozide, I don't know who makes it - so I leave second box blank or type generic...
5. Third box allows you pick the category - HORSE -MEDICATIONS- click that line. then you see pictures of products... go to the 3rd page (at bottom right says page 1 of 8.) the 3rd page has a photo of Biozide Gel - click choose it and do your review..
Thanks again for getting people to sign up and post on there.. we are getting so close to the end here...horse lovers please unite for the horses at angel acres.. Fran

Completely off the subject, need prayer for my 15 yr. old Yorkie who's been missing since Thursday. My husband let him out while I was on the computer and then went to bed without saying a word about him being outside, locked the doors and turned out the lights in the rest of the house. He hasn't been seen since but my neighbor heard him barking further from our house but saw our lights were out so didn't call thinking it was another dog. I do a bed check before I go to bed around 11 PM and didn't see him. So I searched the house, called outside then woke my husband and asked if he saw Sammy, that I don't see him inside. Then he said he let him out. WHAT? You never told me that! Now he's gone, and it started snowing tonight. We searched till 2 AM looking by driving and walking with flashlights and he was nowhere to be found. I don't know where he could be. He's almost deaf or seems to be, can't see well, can't walk far, can't tolerate the cold, exhausts easily or might just collapse if overstessed. I will be surprised if we find him at all and even more if we find him alive.

I haven't been on any forums to speak of but thought I'd ask you my friends to keep him in your prayers. I'm hoping for a miracle. Even the police sent a patrol car to help search for him and the desk seagent said to call if I find him. Everyone has been so nice, all the neighbors wished me well finding him, I gave them all my phone number to call me if they see him. If he's gone we'd at least like to bury him. I'm just sick about it. What my husband did was so careless but he is very upset, he loves that little dog. I always said he was his dog.

I believe in miracles and could not say what happened for sure so I will hold out hope until I find him. The elements will not be kind to this frail little old man.

Thank you for your prayers, they do mean a lot to me.

It's looking pretty bad now, no sign of him, neighbor's haven't seen him, not at closest shelters and we've started our search within less than 2 hours of the last known hearing him bark by my closest neighbor. No one has seen him and they all know him. He's lived here for 12 years but at 15 years of age and covered with tumors being difficult to get around, and exhaustion sets in so fast and he collapses I don't think he's alive. We are now hoping to recover a body which is also unlikely. After all, if we can't find him while he can bark, it's not likely we'll find him otherwise. We've really searched everwhere he might possibly go and asked all the neighbors even further than he could travel.

Hi you all!! YIKES we dropped to 9th last night so we need some major zootooing help!!
Here are some suggestions for products since I have become a zootoo GEEK- Davis boots, bell boots, double ended snap, hay, straw, bute, martingale, bit (take your pick!) blankets- Rambo, Weetherbeata, brush, curry comb, Absorbine, black sunflower birdseed, dog foods- accessories- take your pick, cat foods and accessories, collars, nail clippers etc..animal books- Misty of Chinqoteaque (sp) SeaBiscuit, My Guy Barbaro (by Edward Prado)
and of course here is the cheat sheet.. Many thanks for your help- we appreciate it!!
To max out on points you can do the following daily:
1. Pet Wars (pick minimum of 5 photos)

2. Journal entries- do 2 (2 or 3 sentences about anything- I select General as my category and I always talk re my horse)

I can never think of products I use so I keep my Dover catalog handy..Also Horse Books is another great category- "My Boy Barbaro by Edgar Prado, "Seabiscuit" , "My Friend Flicka", Misty of Chinqoteague", The Chronicle of the Horse, The Horse Magazine, horse magazines- I just wrote recently one on the Chronicle of the horse..horse blankets by brand- Rambo anyone.. glueon shoes- pitch fork, bucket, double ended snaps, bucket holders, blanket holders, sweat scraper etc. all count!!

Why do I do this? Because I visit the horses at Jo's and believe we need to save more... and to do that we need the $$$...it takes maybe 15 min out of my day.. and that is something that I certainly can afford for this cause.

Thank you all again for helping the horses at Angel Acres!

I do Pet Wars and a few product reviews every day.

Thank you for doing that for us...we just checked out the two shelters that pulled ahead of us...check it out...7th place has 1634 affiliates posting and the 8th place shelter has 912 affiliates posting...we have 387 as of an hour ago!

So, I am guessing we are one hardcore group of zootooers to be keeping up with "the big boys".

BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR HELPING US, the wee little guys...

Jo :D

I finally made it to Zoowise, but I'm running out of pictures! Good excuse to take some more? :)

I hope we can hang in there, I do believe Angel Acres is the only Equine shelter in the running, it would be a shame to let the cats and dogs get all the glory!

I think horses deserve some help too. Let's face it, most people can't relate to horse rescues at the same numbers that they can small animals, most people don't own or ride horses because they are expensive. Most everyone can own a dog or cat so they just relate better. Horses need help too!

Can anyone tell me what place we're in now. I have the worst time getting photos uploaded. I can't navigate this site well, guess I'd need to spend more time in it.

We need to get more people to sign up and Jo can invite them to join through the site so we also get 50 points for them signing up too. That's a lot of points just to sign up.

I thought we were pretty secure in 9th place but now Central Missouri Humane Society is suddenly w/in 3000 points of Angel Acres this am. How can we compete with these huge groups? Help!!!!!

Susan- We are only 2500 points behind the 8th place group, but the 10th place group is moving up really fast and is only 3000 behind Angel Acres (sorry I can't remember the exact numbers- no coffee yet!)

Without getting a decent placement NO HORSES will get help! How sad that we can't muster enough support even through COTH to help horses. I don't get it. There are thousands of people in this forum. I know I'm having a really hard time uploading photos.

OK COTHers, we need your help, actually the horses need your help. This is Chronicle of the HORSE, we can do this for our beloved equines. YES WE CAN!!!

I've been waiting for about 30 minutes now while trying to upload one photo, no wonder it's hard to get points.

Susan, I have the same problem. I get the updates from them to my email and I try to upload ANYTHING and can't!! I get the desperation, but when you try to help but can't it's even more frustrating!!

Moonwitch, DressageGeek is right, I gave up on uploading and did the Pet Wars and Product Review and wrote an answer, which will probably tick people off, LOL, told her to spay her pet. But a lot of people said that. Anyway, I do think that other ways of gaining points are easier.

I keep trying to figure out this site, it is so frustrating. I guess this contest should do for them what they want to accomplish, gain visitors to their site. They better pay off.

Go Jo and Angels at Angel Acres!!!

What happens when you guys try to upload pics? I haven't had any problems, but when I first add apicture from the "browse" option it takes a minute, then I have to click send again and it goes. Now I have had troubles doing the journal entries, it always seems to think mine are too similar? Could be because they're always about my horses a I guess.

Susan P

My uploading may be just too slow but what do you click on, because I can't click on Submit, it greys out.

I'm at 799 right now, so I'm going back for one more Pet War to round me out to 800, I think I can do another today, we'll see.

Maybe I'm starting to work the system.

I didn't realize they are even noticing similarities in the journals.
