I found Pamela had passed away in her paddock, apparently peacefully, when I went out to feed late this afternoon. She was 29, so I guess it was just her time. She is the pasture-mate to my elderly stallion, Master Huntsman, who was obviously confused and distraught. They were fine when they had lunch around 12:30, so she apparently passed somewhere inbetween. She was a distant kind of girl, not particularly social with people but she adored Huntsman and he adored her, they were inseparable. So, I'm glad he has some time to understand what happened to her. I am concerned about getting her buried since we are expecting a good bit of rain tonight and tomorrow. She was a lovely mare and I shall miss her but not as much as Huntsman will.

Hopefully you have her covered until she can be buried? A large tarp will do it, but definitely cover her completely.

Godspeed to her. Hugs to you.

Very sad for your loss. Listen to VB. Cover her. At least it was quick and easy for her, and for you.

I'm so sorry Penny! Hugs to you and Master Huntsman. There's an awefully nice herd of horses forming over the rainbow bridge...

Always sad to see an old mare go. Mine will be 31 in March. I can only hope she goes like
Pamela. They will like each other when they meet up one day.Thinking of you.

Hugs to you and Huntsman on the loss of a grand old lady. She certainly made it easy for you and I can only wish that we all will pass one day as loved and respected as she seemed to have been.

twistoffate is right: there certainly is a lovely herd gathered over the rainbow bridge. One day we will all be reunited and can go for a wonderful gallop with our old friends again...

Oh, Penny, I am sorry. Godspeed to Pamela, and many hugs to you and to Huntsman. Can you give him another mare to keep him company?

Thanks to all of you for your kind words. I have covered her and hope I can get a backhoe out here. I'm watching the weather and maybe the rain will move out long enough to get it done. I checked Huntsman last night and he is circling and guarding her. I think if we could get her buried it would be better for him. I'll have to think about putting another mare in with him. I don't want to stress any of them and certainly not him at his age. I would love to put Metier in with him (she's going on 31!), but I don't want to stress her by moving her either. This is an "old equine home" out here and I guess we'll be facing this scenario more than I'd like. It's a dilemma we all have at some time. I am glad she did it "her way".

Oh I'm so sorry :(

Jingles for you and Master Huntsman - I hope he adjusts to life without her well.
I'm sure my old sweet stallion was there to greet her... he crossed the bridge yesterday. I agree with twistoffate - it IS quite the herd on the other side!!

I lost one this time of year a few years ago, and the stress of trying to get her buried was terrible. I hope you are able to get that done. It's so hard to deal with on top of the loss.

She was obviously loved--by horse and human alike. I hope the old man finds peace quickly. Poor guy.

She has been laid to rest on a hill in their paddock. Huntsman watched the whole procedure with his head resting on my shoulder much of the time. Before she was buried we walked over and uncovered her and said goodbye. He talked to her, touching her nose, but walked away and wouldn't go back until it was covered. I am always amazed at his dignity and intelligence. There was some blood in her nostril and possibly in her mouth. I don't know if that is indicative what happened. I hope he can find some closure -- please keep him in your prayers. Thanks so much.

I don't know how I missed this. What a grand old gal. I do hope my old man goes the same way. He doesn't like to be fussed over or cause any problems, it's his thing.

Godspeed Pamela... It'll be okay Huntsman, she's in good hands.

(((HUGS))) to you and Huntsman.

Is this year over YET?

Penny, Huntsman is such a special animal...not only has he given you so many nice babies, he is such an intelligent animal. His reaction to seeing her laying there is very human. You and he share a relationship that is truly blessed. What a nice way for Pamela to leave this earth......prayers of comfort to both you and Huntsman.

I've been thinking about you and Huntsman and your precious mare all day.
What a grand age to reach, and how lucky she was to have you to look after her and love her into her old age. How lucky too she was to pass quietly and peacefully in her own home, in her own time, with her best friend beside her.
If only we could all be so lucky.
You and MH are very special, and your bond is so moving.
My thoughts and prayers are with him now.
