My trainer suggested I get a pair of side reins so we can start lunging my guy. He is a TB with a big WB type build and a long neck. Any suggestions for side reins? I'm looking to spend around $40-50 max.

Thanks!

Get leather! In case anything happens where they need to break off they can. The nylon ones will not break in a freak accident.

be sure they have a section of elastic. I had some that were cotton webbing with the multiple rings.

I think I got mine from Dover, along with a surcingle. But National Bridle probably has good ones too.

If you are going to use side reins and a surcingle.. the tricky part is making sure the rings on the surcingle are spaced appropriately AND, the rings are large enough to run the snaps/clips of the side reins through.

I bought these, and the're great http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp?pn=X1-3017&idu=1AF28792NA9T&ids=886386318.

Don't buy the Crown leather ones with the doughnut, they're too short.

Just as another viewpoint, I have worked with several trainers who DON'T want elastic. Horses can lean on them a little too much. May not be an issue with your guy, but I actually have the one's without elastic. And they are all nylon, attached with a bit of bailing twine to be safe. Love the ones with the rings as opposed to buckles. MUCH easier to adjust.

Instead of the elastic I like the ones with a rubber donut. It will have a bit of give but not as much as the elastic.

Schneider's has some at very good prices. Use code "K" and get $10 off if you spend $50 or more. They ship very quickly too.

Do sidereins all come in a standard length?
We have a set, but I have a 17+ hand TB with a long neck and they are tight on their longest setting. I have been looking, but have yet to see any that indicate a size.
I want to put them on my Christmas list, but don't want the same length we currently have.

Dover has some quick-adjust ones that are very nice and very adjustable. They are a hair too long for all my cob-types- 15-16 had QH and TBs, but with the rings I can snap the front and back back on themselves, so they'd do well for the big guys.

can't answer if they come in different sizes, because mine are all too short!! I have the donut side reins and vienna reins (both leather). I don't know who they are supposed to fit, but I had to get two leather dog collars of similar width and buckle them on as extensions for the vienna reins. it was cheaper than taking them out to have leather added. especially since I didn't pay too much for them in the first place. They were too short for my 17+ hander and for the 16.1 younger version.

I thought about adding the dog collar to them if I couldn't find any that were actually made longer. Glad to know that it works.

Point taken - depends on the trainer.
