My old guy is colicing today...weather changes have bothered him before, and we've got a doozy coming our way today. Purple gums and he's absolutely miserable.
Vet is over two hours away, and I'm trying to maintain him until the Dr. can get here.... he is the sweetest old man, and I hate seeing him this way.
Some COTH jingles would be greatly appreciated!

He's gone.
I knew it this morning that I wasn't going to have him for much longer. He was very shocky by the time the vet got here, and it was clear that his time was up. He was tough and dignified 'till the very end - never offering to object to my requests even in his pain.
After retiring from the track, he sired 24 foals, some of whom had racing careers, and some of whom reside on my farm now. He came here to retire and live out his remaining time in comfort, and while he was here he was always able to bring a smile to my face - his idea of wooing the ladies was to whicker softly and gaze adoringly at them. He delighted in his meals, and would communicate his excitement with hoots and whinnies. When he was done eating, he would savor every last morsel by licking his lips.
He was a Great Old Man, and I will miss him terribly.
RIP Gato, may you gallop with all the best who crossed the Bridge before you.
Thank you all for your jingles and prayers - I am sure that they made his last hours more bearable then they might have been otherwise.

Oh AppJumpr I am so sorry. Another great TB over the Bridge.
The love and compassion you have for your horses has always shined through in your posts, and no doubt he was a lucky boy to live out his days with you as his guardian. Now he will return the favor, watching over you and your horses from a better place.
Big hugs, and Godspeed Gato.

Awwwwwwww, Jess, I'm so sorry. Gato will be greeted by many greats, including my dear Char who crossed that bridge last month. The wisdom of the grand old TBs is quite extraordinary and we are the lucky ones to have had them in our lives.
Shedding a tear for them and for you, here in snowy-sunny-temperature-fluctuating Maine.

PM returned.
This face (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2880160110047997541xSbZKW?vhost=good-times) lives on in his foals. I just looked across my yearling paddock and saw him looking back at me in all of them. The kindness is just palpable, isn't it?

Perhaps one of those faces looking over the fence will be stallion material, and his lines will continue to prosper on your place.

I am so sorry for your loss. After losing my old man to colic in June, I know how hard it is to lose a horse this quickly.
Hang in there and know that my Dancer was there to meet him on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.

viney - I am hoping so. I have 5 colts, a filly and a mare by him on the farm (I ended up with a breeding program that someone was selling...I haven't bred them all myself!) One of the colts lost his mother earlier this summer, and he's a nice little guy, so perhaps I'll keep him intact to try and carry on both his mother AND his fathers' legacies...
Time will tell.
It might sound funny, but I am so glad that one of his yearlings has the same way of talking that he did... I know that when I go outside to feed in the morning I'll still hear a piece of him asking for breakfast :sadsmile:
