View Full Version : Quinn & Paris' dam is colicing
Quinn
Dec. 8, 2008, 08:44 AM
I would be most appreciative of some powerful jingles. Lily, the mother of Quinn and Paris is colicing and I have just spoken with the BO and the Vet. She has been tubed, given a rectal and has been given Banamine. She's got a fair bit of gas and her small colon is distended. Lily is not a surgical candidate so I would greatly appreciate a jingle or two.

One of my mares recently had a bad case of what the vets called gas colic - they even had the surgeon on stand-by. Fortunuately, they tried her on IV fluids first, even though the tests didn't show any signs of dehydration, and that resolved things for her in a couple of hours. It was pretty scary there for a while though. Maybe that is something you could try for your horse?
Good luck and lots of jingles.

I have just spoken with my Vet and I'm heartbroken to say Lily is being euthanized. She was a great Mum and I guess it's a blessing she resorbed her pregnancy this year. I would truly hate to deal with that. Thank you for the kind thoughts and wishes.

Oh Quinn, I so sorry. It sounds like you can't be there for her either ... I so sorry. Colic is just the worst thing around ... and our poor gentle critters suffer so when it doesn't go right.
I'm sorry you couldn't be there ... {{{{hgus}}}} And I'm so sorry you've lost your girl. 2008 really really sucked.

Thank you sincerely. Randy and I bought Lily with her 2 week old filly "Quintessential" 10 years ago. Lily was a registered TB/CSH mare with virtually nothing outstanding in her lineage. We brought her home, kept her in a separate paddock from the rest of the broodmares for a week and then turned them all out together. Lily was, to say the least, a very laid back mother. Within a few days, Quinny #1 was holding up a front leg. She had obviously ventured too close to one of the other mares/babies and was kicked in the elbow. Had the Vet out and we didn't have fancy mobile digital xray capabilities. Her injury merely looked like soft tissue strain. I was instructed to do passive physical therapy. She was no better after a week and we took the two of them to the Vet clinic. It was apparent immediately that the elbow was fractured so badly she was put down that day. Brought Lily home and after a month or so we decided to breed both Lily and Hilary to "Rio Grande."
Both mares went up to Dr. Pedro Jou for AI using frozen and both were confirmed in foal. Home they came and in the interim, I had turned an old gelding by the name of Thomas out with the broodmares. He had been picked on by some of my bigger boys and the mares took to him immediately. Once home, I stupidly turned Lily out again with the mares (and Thomas.) He charged her, galloped after her and got her in a corner. Kicked her so hard he broke her nose. Back then the Rio Grande breedings were no live foal guarantee. My Vet came out, said her nose was broken but the nasal passages were okay and verified she was still in foal.
Quinn #2, my dear sweet Quinn was born May 24th, 1999. Lily was then bred to "A Fine Romance" in 2003 and Paris was born in 2004. She was bred to "Cabardino" last year but didn't catch and bred this year to "Rio's Filius." She did catch but resorbed before day 45. She really was a very nice uncomplicated mare.
When I sold the farm this summer, Lily had gone to a very good friend of mine as a broodmare and she truly couldn't have been in better hands. She was loved and she knew it and I'm very sorry she's gone.
Thank you again.

Oh Quinn I am so sorry for your loss. The Bridge is a busy place these days.
I hope your girl is looking down on her babies like I hope my old man who left me earlier today is looking over his. I am taking comfort in having some of his flesh and blood in my paddocks today. I hope her babies bring the same comfort to you.
