He was officially retired at the Pennsylvania National this year. It was cool seeing him again. Dawn Fogel still owns him, and he is retired at their farm in KY. He was amazing to watch. He gave me chills.

Charlie was one of the best horse's i've ever ridden. He was SO comfortable! He definately isnt easy to ride, but i always had fun on him. I got to jump him a few times, and i swear the horse found his own spot every time! I couldnt see anything on him, but somehow he always did it.

There were so many great ponies in the 80's. You would be hard pressed to beat Kiss Me Not. She was great over fences, but it was such a treat to see her model and hack. Yes I Can was such an amazing small. Ma Belle was also very wonderful as was Virginia Reel. And Touch Me Too was one of my favorite larges. Actually my favorite small ever was In to Win. Darling and very, very sweet. Yikes. I could go on for hours. LOVE the ponies!
As far as hunters, I always loved Calling Card. Very cute. Missouri was also nice. Rainforest was also great.

OMG his neck is a freak of nature.. please tell me he is a stallion so that i can breed him to my mare :D :D
Yes Cunningham is a special horse and yes is a stallion. John Bragg has the ride on him. I have seen him go on the west coast numerous times in the past year and he is building an impressive show record in the conformation division. From the first moment he captures your attention in a way few horses do. As a famous horse should, he has that "charisma", and is the calmest sweetest horse in any situation. Where he goes, he rules. When he stands you can hear a buzz around him, and he can do that to people in the best of company. Just a neat horse.
I have become a Cunningham fan. The first time I saw him was at the Pebble Beach classic (July 07) a young girl who looked about 15 was riding him around a busy warmup area bareback with nothing but a halter and lead, and he was totally calm and relaxed. When I saw he was a stallion, my jaw dropped. That was the beginning. I can be at a show where there are over a 1000 horses and when he walks out of the warm up arena surrounded by 100s of nice nice horses, your eyes are on him.
If you are looking for hunter stallions in the "awesome" category Shine registered name is Alesi out of Texas fits the bill as well. He is one you need to see in person. The promo does not do him justice. I saw him in Texas last January and he is a very cool horse, with an amazing temperament. Will stand on the wash rack without a halter at a show and not move a muscle. Super sweet adorable horse, with an amazing head and neck. He now is owned and ridden by his amateur owner and is ultra fancy and is truly the amateur horse and his owner will vouch for that, and I think she could have bought a couple of houses in a good neighbourhood for what she paid for him.
I have never met in person but I have every reason to believe that Popeye K tops the leader board of awesome hunter stallions. I certainly have taken enough photos of his phenomenal winning daughter Wow at the finals in Kentucky both in 07 and 08. In fact I did a portrait for Leslie Neilson (Santa Barbara) of Wow and her younger sister this year while shooting the KY nationals for Shawn MacMillen and Leslie went bananas and everyone had to have a copy of that photo. It was funny too. We had like ten minutes before the next class began and we ran to a knoll out back overloooking the cross country course at the Horse Park and we all worked our magic. Leslie had her three in bridles and undid one side of each rein giving some room to back off, and we got it done in short order. The most hilarious part of the story was here we were going with three horses and two women and a baby in a stroller. When we finished, they took the horses and I took the baby back to the ring. He slept through the whole thing. Someday that will make a good story to tell. Mom comes running over after the horses are put away and the baby never noticed a thing. When asked Popeye K is generally on the tip of the tongue of any top judge when asked who ranks at the top of the hunter breeding charts? Sorry but that was a fun moment and just wanted to share.
Ha Ha... I guess I am here with the stallion report. Just one more...a trakehner who has been injured but was a hunter champion and then retrained successfully to Prix St Georges in Dressage by Erin Brinkman of Valhalla Farm and who has the best best best temperament... another of these riding down the road in halter and lead shank kind of stallions... that is Donaufurst. I love that horse. He is as sweet as they come and I remember seeing him as a hunter at an ATA meet in Ohio and thought he was truly magnificent.

Isgilde was shown way back when, before the Wheelers owned her, by a little girl named Natalie Pawlenko - or something very close to that. I first saw both of them at Harrisburg - can't remember the year - and we all were absolutely amazed - that such a wonderful jumper would go so well for a small child. She showed in the Regular Workings and may have been champion - that I don't remember, for sure. But she was so good that the Wheelers bought her at some point. I'd love to know that price back then.

Isgilde's rider, Natalie, went on to become a very famous dressage rider. When I was a little girl outside Chicago, I remember them breaking the mare in the very small indoor arena at Oakbrook. Now that is REALLY going back awhile!

How sad that many of the horses mentioned in this thread as legendary or notable died under such horrible and tragic circumstances -
rainforest, henry the hawk, rub the lamp, etc

Does anyone have pictures of Stocking Stuffer? I believe he was before my time, but everyone mentions him as a legendary hunter, so I would love to see some pictures :)

Yes, Stocking Stuffer. A little horse that could jump with the best of them.
Did anyone ever see Starman show as a hunter - he was pretty amazing, too.

The only pictures of Stocking Stuffer I have are in the program from the National Horse shows during the mid 70's..He was awesome and had LOTS of chrome too! Would love to see more pics of him. He was owned I believe by August A. Busch the III I am sure they have pictures....
