I put a stick on my May 10, 2008, weanling by Ikoon out of my Dutch mare, Natasha.
Dad is 16.2H.
Mom is 16H.
Foal is 13H and a bit more.
How does she compare to others of the same age, or thereabouts?

Not that mine will be much of a comparison (orphaned at 2 days and issues with controlling ulcers and such) She is 12.2 at the withers and almost 13 at the hip. She was born end of April. Dam 16.1, Sire 15 (but with lots of size behind him)
I am looking forward to everyone else's responses.

My 2008 filly born end of May is almost 14 hh already !! She is the biggest WB foal I have ever had at this age. Her mom is 15.3 hh TB and sire is 17 hh KWPN. Dam always produces large sized foals but this one is the biggest so far. Sire is my trainer's Grand Prix jumper.
My friend's filly by the same sire is 14.2 hh already -- she is a month older than my filly. I think her dam is over 16 hh.
However, my trainer's filly by the same sire is a little over 13 hh but she was born in July. Her dam is 15.3 hh.
This is the sire's first crop and talk about a nice small crop (small as in quantity not size --LOL). All fillies no colts !!

Wow! I thought my baby was big. But maybe not. At 4.5 months he was 12.2. Mom is 16.1 and dad is 16.1.

I measured my colt at 5 months (Nov. 7th), and he was 13hh on the nose back then.. a bit taller behind. I will measure him again this weekend as he'll be 6 months on Sunday, I will report back and let you know if he's grown.

I've got a "monster" of a Georgian Grande filly....Born April 19th, 2008, Dam is only 15.2hh, Sire is 16.1hh...I sticked the Filly at 7 months of age and she was 14.3hh at the bum, 14.2hh at the wither.I also tried the string test.... I don't know how accurate the string test is, but it measured her being 16.3 when mature.
I have another Georgian Grande filly who I haven't sticked yet, but the string test showed 18hh...

String Test: could someone run that by me again? Where do you start and where do you finish? I would like to do this on my colt.

I just measured my colt yesterday. He just turned five months on 25th of November. Dad is 17 hands, mom is 16.3 hands and built like a tank. Max is 14 hands at withers - he grew four inches in the last month and is also big boned like mom.

Mine is 13.3 but she is an early foal with a Feb 21 birth date. The only thing that is interesting is the mare's first foal was by a much larger sire and he was 14.1 at 20 months. I don't know if this filly is going to be substantially larger than her sire and dam, both 15.3 or if she is just an early grower and will be done sooner than normal.

I'll play. My Derby Day colt out of a 16.0 maiden and by a 16.2 stallion sticks at 14.1 as of this past weekend. He's butt high but I didn't measure the back end ;)
Wasn't counting on one as tall as this guy is threatening to be!

I measured my filly today. She was born in April.
She is 14.1+ at the withers and 14.3-3/4 at the butt.
Both parents are 16.2H.
She is a French Anglo Arabian.

Appaloosa filly born 6/7/08 so will be 6 months in a couple of days.
Sire: 16.3hh
Dam: 16.1hh
Filly: 13.3-14hh and crazy butt high
Growth has slowed down in the last month since she was weaned which is a good thing.

My colt, oh, now gelding...
Mom is 15.3
Dad is 17 hands
Ace is about 14.2 right now and a little butt high. He was born the end of Feb.
Here is a pic of him out with a retired gelding who is about 16.1.
Looks like to me that Ace will be bigger then 16.1! So much for the first baby theory!:D

I string tested Aria (the orphan) It shows as just a hair under 16hh. I am ok with that. Her mom and dad are chunky types with a leg at each corner. So even 15.3 would be just fine.
I string tested the 2 year old tb I picked up at auction (I know I am crazy... my hubby definitely things so lol.. but she was too nice to pass up for that price) and it came up just over 16.2-my favourite size!
I did Aven as well. According to the string test.. he is now at maximum height :(. (anyone want a very well bred 14.3h swedish/irish tb cross?)

How old is Aven? The string test will be quite off if the cannon bones are shorter (or longer) than average on your horse.

I don't think the string test works on weanlings.
I think youngsters need to be at least yearlings before those predictions work.
I think my 13H filly will be a 16H mare like her mother and grandmom. Deusi has a fair amount of Gelder in her pedigree.

The knee to cornet band is supposed to work on weanlings. The elbow to ergot doesn't I don't think.

Dec. 5, 2008, 08:39 PM
I only use coronet-knee, but I don't really look at weanlings.
Once they are 12 months old, I start measuring.
My filly is bred to be a big time jumper, but she can also be a dressage horse, her mother is a fabulous mover. So if she finishes around 16H, it is fine with me for a dressage home.

Cool then maybe Aria will be bigger than 15.3 16hh. Either way its good. (cause she won't shrink lol)

Last I sticked my 2 was a month ago...April 30 and May 2 fillies. One was 13.2 and one was 13.3 at that point.......both have 15.3H TB dams and sire of both is 17H Hanno Waldaire. I think they will end up around 16.2 which is just right as far as I am concerned. In filly was small and one was huge at birth.......now they are about the same size. Strings tests kid needs to be at least 12 mos old.

I am refusing to get a stick out...so take this with a grain of salt!
We have 4 foals and any way you slice it there is a bit of scatter in regards to size...
There are 2 Brunhilde filles, 1 normal-to-tall sized colt and 1 leggy, soon-to-be-a-big-horse sized colt. Or another way to put it - 1 future 16.3'er, 2 17+'ers and a 16.2'er. 2 look like yearling yak-like creatures and the other 2 are still sort of pretty. :rolleyes:There are some common ancestors (Absatz, Duellant, Goldfish II) but with the yearlings starting to look 'pretty' again *Thank Goodness* and the 2 year olds couldn't be more beautiful & well put together...so there is hope for the younger ones. Just a year or two away! :D

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but it does bring up a very interesting area of discussion. Many of you have alluded to the issue -- weanlings usually look like ugly ducklings. In fact, I've learned to run away from pretty weanlings; the ugly ones seem to always turn out better for our purposes.
SO, how do you evaluate a weanling? What are the key aspects that do not change, and what are "so what's?" CAN you evaluate a weanling, or is it just a crap shoot at that point? I know what I do, but I'd sure like some advice and opinions.

LOL... really? Avoid the pretty ones? Hmm... seems a bit illogical to me.
I don't think there's any hard and fast rule there. I think there are some pretty babies who remain pretty until adulthood. Some start out pretty, go through fugly stages, then end up pretty again. Some are born somewhat funny-looking but blossom with age.
The only thing I don't think I've ever seen (but I guess it's possible), is a lovely foal growing up to be a fugly horse.
I had a WB/TB filly who was lovely as a weanling, yearling, went through a short fugly stage as a coming 2-yr old and then was gorgeous and stayed gorgeous.
I have bred 2 WB/Saddlebred crosses - the first one was cute as a filly but after weaning she was growthy and gawky and went through looong fugly stages until finally she started looking nice around 3.5 yrs old.
The second, my 2008 colt, is very typey and although only time will tell, will probably never be fugly. Even now, at 6 months, with two inches of thick winter coat and 2" bum high, he could probably go out and kick butt at a line show. He'll probably always be very "pretty", even in his growthy stages (my farrier says he's girly..lol).
His half sister looked like a goat/giraffe cross at this age...
Oh, and my height update? He's grown about 1/3 of an inch in the last month... He's a little over 13hh in front (13.2hh behind).

I measured the horses last night.
AIDEN:
He'll be 8 months old on Friday. He's only 13.2 at the withers and 14 butt. He's a stout guy that's for sure. He does have a lot of bone and big joints. PLEASE let him grow over 16 hands!
Sire 16.2 WB, Dam 16.2 Maiden TB (built like tank).
LUNA:
She is a rescue filly we got and she was born May 30th. She is currently 13 hands at the withers and 13.2 at the butt. Sire & Dam: 15.2 hand Paints

OK, our filly was born April 1 2008, so she's at 9 months now, and we measured her 2 weeks ago to be 13.2 1/2"
Mom is 17.2+, dad is 16h. At first I thought she was going to be big, but it sounds like she's smaller than a bunch!
Anyone else have comparable aged foals to measure?:)

well the same foals from the earlier posting are 08s born 4/30 and 5/2. The first is 14.2 front and back, the second is 14.1 in front/14.2 behind. Both have 15.3H dams and 17H sire Waldaire. I expect them to mature at about 16.2+

Peg - '08 must have been a tall year for you! My filly Fleur Noire *bred by Peg* stands 14.2 at her withers and higher behind. She is very much a Yak right now but looks to end up every bit as tall as mom and dad, 16.3.

Don't freak out too badly Castlegate. I have a march 08 filly I just sticked a couple of weeks ago at 15.0. Two reasons I'm not freaking....
1. She is very leggy. The leggy ones don't ever seem to get as tall as you think. ANd for SURE don't ever do the ergot to elbow measurement with them. It doesnt work with leggy horses.
2. The foals from this mare are born tall, and attain a great height very quickly, but when mature don't get to be as tall as I've feared. Two other half-sibs were the same height as she is now, but matured to 16.3 and 16.2 respectively.

Do you have any pics of horses that have more leg than body?
Every horse I have ever had ended up within one inch of their elbow to ergot measurement. One was what I considered very leggy, but had high withers to compensate lol.

Here is a link to the page of a mare that the E to E measurement said:
17.3. BTW...my VET tried the cannon bone "center of knee to center of coronet" and THAT said 18.0
half sib to the filly I mention above. She's 16.2 and will get to 16.3.

There is no way on God's green earth I'm photographing the 08 15.0 filly. She'll be just fine in 6 months, but she is unholy ugly right now. Butt High (must be close to 15.2), big headed, with a huge eye that looks like an owl. EEEEWWWWWwwwwww.

That's right Railmom, tall is the standard this year. My farrier thought Sera is immense. But as Ahf said, the leggy ones can fool you. Mine is mostly legs, her little body is stuck on those sticks called legs. Looks like a spider. She is so correct- but movement is hampered since she's butt high. I'd bet Fleur can move, Railmom. Peg

Heres a new pic of my colt. He was born in Feb 2008 and he is about 14.3 now.
His mom was 15.3 and dad was 17, but this was her first baby. His mother is very leggy and he seems to be very leggy.
Does he seems leggy in the picture, or does he seems proportionate? Forgive the closed eyes and chewing, he isn't terribly photogenic yet;)
Just curious because I would love something around 16.1, can't imaging he will be as big as his dad! He is already wearing moms cob halter and show bridle!

This is fairly accurate, though not for the super slow grower:
Final Height = Current height in inches/ Percent of Mature Height
Age in Months | Percent of Mature Height
Birth 61 to 64
1 67 to 70
3 76 to 79
6 83 to 86
9 87 to 90
12 90 to 92
18 94 to 96
24 96 to 98
30 97 to 99
36 98 to 100
48 99 to 100
