Azeri (http://auctions.bloodhorse.com/article/48285.htm). 'In foal to Ghostzapper no less.
I don't know why this has me so floored. I guess it's just if I owned a HOY, I couldn't imagine selling her.
But then, I couldn't imagine parting with my maiden filly either.

A sign of the times or a sign of her usefulness as a broodmare?

Regarding a sign of the times at hand, given the current state of things I see a strong likelyhood of RNA. I'm kind-of puzzled at the strategy (if there is strategy) behind this.

RNA is probable, but like you say what is the point of it? Seems odd.

She is part of the Paulson trust and as such pretty much had to be sold since the trust is eventually going to go away.
But much as he did with Azeri's yearling last fall, Michael Paulson bought her back. Since I'm no expert on such things  my best guess is that he really didn't want to sell her but had to do to the terms of the trust. Now what happens will be anyone's guess, but it looks like he'll either try to sell her privately or get the trust renegotiated to take some of the pressure off trying to sell in this market.

Not for sale. Unless you offer the really big bucks. Then maybe.
from the BloodHorse: Azeri, For Now, Probably Won't Be Sold (http://auctions.bloodhorse.com/article/48771.htm)
“Right now we’re inclined to just keep Azeri in our inventory,” said Paulson Jan. 13. “She’s a four-time Eclipse Award champion (with three divisional titles in addition to her Horse of the Year honor), and we gave everybody an opportunity to buy a horse like that. It came real close, but it just didn’t happen. For some reason, it didn’t happen, so I see that as an omen that obviously we’re supposed to keep her. That’s pretty much it for right now. I’ll let you know if something comes up and someone makes an offer we can’t refuse.” (emphasis mine)
Charming.
Can't we retire that phrase already? 'At least where racehorses are concerned?

How so? Yes hasn't had any offspring hit the track yet. She could be an absolute dud as a broodmare for all we know.

RNA'd for $4.4 mil back in January, here's your second chance at taking home the 2002 Horse of the Year:
Azeri in November Sale (http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/52541/azeri-in-november-sale-vallenzeri-renamed)
excerpted from article linked above:
“There has been a change in the emphasis of the trust,” said Sikura, whose Hill 'n' Dale operation was Azeri's consignor in January and will perform the same duty in November. “The objective now is if the horse is in the sale to sell the horse. The trust has come to an end, and the horses are being liquidated and sold.”

God, I hope they aren't liquidating horses. Inventory, okay, but not horses.

I guess it's better than liquifying them. ;)

I want her. I wonder if they would take payments of $50.00 a month <g>.
