I have an old set of rubber lined reins that I love but cannot find a set to replace them (plus they are brown and I have a black bridle). I have tried various other rubber lined reins and wound up sending them back as they are all so thick. I bought a set of rubber laced web reins but the stops along the reins sort of get in the way when I am trying to adjust my rein length, usually the place I want my hands are right on top of the stop.:( .....
I have tried the plain rubber reins and they are so thick I cannot handle them with a whip in my hand. OK - I have small hands.;)
Does anyone have any better suggestions for a decent set of reins for dressage where I have get a decent grip, not have them slide out of my hand but are not so very thick?

Sometimes they show up on Ebay. Jaguar makes some. Crosby used to. The Jag's are available with and without stops I think.
Possibly call Dressage Extesnsions, or someone that carries top of the line stuff. Excelle makes the crosby stuff now. I am not sure if they make the bridles now or not.
Try Jimmy's 20th century, or another custom rein maker.

Google is your friend! I just typed in "rubber lined reins" and several manufacturer's names and shops popped up, including Nunn Finer, Ovation, Dover and Bit of Britain. That was just on the first page. Seems I bought a pair of lined reins (narrow ones, so nice for a small handed person...) for a double bridle a while back from some outfit in Canada. Green-something or something-Green...
You can also get your old rubber lined reins dyed to match the bridle.

I quite like these suede lined reins. They are comfy and grippy.

Just a note, I bought the horse size and they are okay with my 15.3 gelding and 15.1 mare. I think they run a little bit short and if I were to order again I might consider the warmblood size. Definitely would if my horse were 16 hs or more

ok- -i'm often accused of going against the flow, but Ijust got a set of single-laced reins on ebay after riding with a set when I tried my horse. I just LOVED the feel of them in my hand. Very different from my regular reins. I'm putting them on my bridle tonight, so we'll see in a week or so if I stick with them....

It's probably GreenHawk. They have a chain of 20 something stores in Canada.

I am like you. I like rubber reins, but find the typical rubber reins too thick for my hands. So now I use Nunn Finer Soft grip reins. They are awesome. They are thin, flexible, and grippy. I have them on both my bridles.

I like them with gloves on, but without gloves they are too rough on my hands. They don't seem to have anymore in black, but they have the Heritage ones on their website, which seem pretty similar.

Another option would be the web reins that have the rubber threads in them - thin but grippy.
But my favorite are my plaited reins. They are soft and have a wonderful drape and conform to my hand.

I found the most AMAZING set of rubber reins. They have great grip but are thin, subtle, soft and pliable.... almost like butter. They don't slip, even in the rain (or when my horse bolts or launches) and the loop falls beautifully.... they never look or feel stiff. They come in black and brown and are sold through Euro American Saddlery. I use them on my snaffle and double bridles. I can't remember the brand name but if you call them and ask Charlie for the same rubber reins that Susie Dutta uses, he'll know What you are talking about. They really are fabulous.

Jerry's has super rubber reins, they have hand stops which I like. I have had mine for years and love them!

I'm such a tack geek, I'm tempted to try one of each rein recommended here.
Somebody really needs to take away my credit card.

If someone figures out what the reins from Euro American are, please post. I can pass my reins on to my mom in my search for reins that don't make my arthritic fingers ache after 5 minutes :(

Bobby's bridles! You can get the rubber lined in pony/horse/warmblood in 1/2" or 5/8" black/brown and hook/buckle end. Their rubber reins are great too. I have kindergartener sized hands and buy the 5/8" instead of the standard 3/4" and they are perfect.

Charlie from Euro American calls them Gumby reins. They are made in England and cost about $125. He is out of stock at the moment but expects a shipment in by the end of the week. They come in regular length and extra long, brown or black. I hope this helps!!

I have not gotten any yet. I am going to check out each suggestion. :) I may buy more than one set as my trainer also needs a set. Might be a nice Christmas present for her...
But I WILL let you all know what I do get.
Thank you, thank you, Thank you!!!

I looked on EA's website and I can't tell if the reins listed there are what I have....the pictures are too small. I am technology inept and don't know how to post a close up picture here of my horse wearing them.
If you want to get a sense of how they look on a bridle, you can go to www.legacy-farms.com and look under the "News" section. In the first picture (chestnut), the snaffle rein is the Gumby reins in brown and the horse in the picture below it (bay) is wearing the Gumby reins in black. The pictures are a little far away so I don't know if this really helps you make a decision. My hands are very small. I was an abject failure in learning to play the piano because my hands cannot span an octave so that may give you an idea how thin the reins are. I hope this helps....

Try KL Select - they are a nubby rubber, but don't have the leather inside the rubber, so they are much softer, finer, more flexible, etc.

Just FYI--the Nunn Finer Soft grip reins are exactly the same as the KL Select, but about $60 less.

Another vote for bobby's!!! LOVE their rubber reins, and the price is WAY better than any other quality rubber reins. The only one's I can ride comfortably in in the rain and not lose my grip.

Mt trainer has the most amazing soft, supple rubber reins and they are called the Eventa by Courbette. Do a search for them as I know I have seen them on some catalogs. I actually like the thick nubby ones that I get for like $15 bucks on Ebay, lol. I use gloves so they feel fine.
