Need help badly...injured mare and BL solution question...

So, this BL solution...does it work ? Will it work on a horse in pain from a fence injury ? One of my herd managed to garrote her pasterns in a section of wire fence.I was not sure if it was something that had to build up in her system in order to work.

NOW, before you all start asking if I have called the vet, let me tell you I cannot get a vet until Friday, but this mare is in bad shape, two legged lame, and I need something to ease her pain. If anyone near me here in Bardstown, Ky can help me out with some bute/and or banamine and SMZ's I would appreciate it. Mods....I hope I ain't breakin a rule by askin' but I need some help...

I have used the BL solution on my horse for his ringbone pain,but ,honestly I don't think it does much.I ended up going back to the bute which seems to give him much better relief.
I guess if that is all you have you could try it,but don't you have any neighbors with some bute/banamine? If I lived in your area I would help you out ,but Viginia is a bit of a drive. Good Luck !

I have had good luck with B and L, but I can't think it would help much in yuor situation.
My vets leave banamine in a box by their gate. Can you dirve to vets and pick up something?

I would use VERY cold water hosing on her that will help to alleviate pain and swelling. Do this for about 15 minutes every 4 hours or so. THis is exactly why I keep bute, banamine and ace on hand!

The BL solution may offer some relief to low-grade chronic pain for some horses, but in your poor horse's case, I think an actual pharmaceutical with measured and predictable results is warranted. I know several people who were able to get NSAIDs and sulfa products from their small-animal vets when there was an unavoidable delay in getting a large-animal vet out. Plain old aspirin can be a short-term solution, too, if your horse has no history of ulcers and there is no uncontrolled bleeding. Powder for large animals is available OTC.

Cold water, as already suggested, will help, too.

Seriously, consider bandaging , including the 2 good legs and provide lots of bedding. Can she lie down?

Bute if you can get it and keep things clean. BL is more of a maintainance alternative.

Better yet, try harder to get a vet out NOW.

She is so much better today...bearing weight on all fours.(Without any pain meds) She is bandaged on both right legs, and does have a thick bed of straw...and the best hay in Nelson County. Her appetite is good, she is going to be fine.

My neighbor just brought me some some bute....we just need some SMZs now.

You might want to bandage all 4 legs. The good legs need as much if not more support than the injured legs.

She is still doing well, if it weren't so dang muddy I would let her out in a small paddock. She has a nice large well bedded stall though:)

This sort of thing is a PSA for why we should all have extra bute, SMZs, and banamine on hand for situations like this. Reminds me to get more bute next time my vet is out...
