View Full Version : Nicanor Update

On Nov. 16, Nicanor had his first official work since the beginning of July. He went three furlongs in :38 seconds flat. "It was an uneventful work," said trainer Michael Matz. "He did his job and went fine."

“We just put him on a van to go to Florida,” said Matz. “He’s still growing. He’s got to be at least 16.2-16.3 hands. He’s not as long as Barbaro was, so he is really a big boy. The whole family was that way; they are just late to mature.”
As a result, chances are Nicanor will not make his racing debut in 2008.
“My guess is that he probably will not race within the next two months,” said Matz. “If he did, it would be at the end of the year.”

VABred as always thanx for keeping us upated on B's family! Don't you if you remember me, I used to post as CrzyCorgi, but I was a big Barbaro fan and followed all of your threads keeping us updated on him. Thanx again, I was just wondering the other day, how he was doing.

I have the most gorgeous pics on my computer of Nicanor and the '07 La Ville foal as well. I have a few of him as a yearling and of couple of him in training, what a gorgeous boy!

FWIW Man in Havana is doing REALLY well in his career as a show jumper. (Not with me!! A friend has him)

If I get a chance I'll try to find some proofs and throw them up.

You can bet your bottom dollar that they are going to be super careful with this horse.

See I gotta interject some thoughts and experiences here.

I (as most here know) worked for Michael starting June 1 2006, just after Barbaro's accident.

We had Man in Havana in our string that year and for the bulk of it, I rode him. He was never treated with kid gloves. Never pampered b/c of who he was brothers with. Quite the opposite in my mind. He didn't want to be a fast horse naturally and we were trying pretty hard to figure out how to find the side of him that wanted to run. (If there even was one....PS there wasn't!) Likewise we had a few other horses that were siblings of "famous" racers. Michael's approach (As far as I could tell....we didn't discuss it at length ;) ) was to stay the course and keep laying the foundation and let the horses minds and bodies tell him if/when they're ready to do more.

I have spoken to a few of my friends who still work for MM and the same is holding true here. Nicanor is a horse, one of over 80 that are stabled and trained with Michael. Not one is more important than any of the others. Sure some may be easier to train, more successful, better bred or more expensive, but the deal is that they all have to go out to the track and learn the game and do the job. None get to just "phone it in" based on their purchase price, family members or any other sparks of brilliance that may have occurred before.

Ok just my 2 cents.

I understand that, but there will be mucho scrutiny for this horse, Huge boots to fill in the mind of fans... wrap him in bubble wrap and go slow, as much time as he needs. Nothing wrong with that! Once bitten, twice shy.

Em, might as well interject my thoughts here. I very briefly galloped at Stephens TB in FL. Just a little fill in for another rider. I love the Stephen's, they're great. I galloped in company with Nicanor and have been on nicer horses and have been on alot of lesser horses. I liked Nicanor, but he was still very much in a baby phase when I saw him about 9 months ago. In comparison, I galloped a half sister to Honey Ryder by AP Indy for all of the winter and spring of last year. Now THAT is a talented horse. One of those horses that you don't even have to break, that goes out and gallops like the stake horse they are the first day. Nicanor may come into his own with age. For his connections, I hope so.

He will be in Fl. for the winter. I think its best to keep that info somewhat quiet. He is still owned by the Jacksons and he does show under his registered name.

He is in the Unionville area and has done some recent clinics with Michael Page and Jimmy Wofford this fall.

He is still a ham and still loves peppermints and carrots. Which they have in abundance where he lives.

Thank you for the info. I have a friend that is in Wellington for the winter and I will tell her to keep an eye out for him...If they are showing him, what division? Maybe he would make a good eventer? or dressage horse....
Imagine that racehorse owners giving second careers a chance, What an idea!
Gotta love the Jacksons......
