I'm paying $17.50 for a 50lb bag of shredded plain beet pulp. I used to pay about $10. Flax seed isn't even in the budget right now. I used to feed a cup or so per horse especially in the winter months (warmed in the crock pot all day) I didn't charge extra for it and just included it in the board. I think I was paying $20 per bag. Now I can't even afford to buy it! Last time I checked it was $36 per bag! WTF?! Is there a shortage of flax seed too? They can't give me that story about the price of gas anymore... so what's up with flax seed? It makes me so angry when they put the price of something up because of the price of gas but when the price of gas goes through the floor it doesn't come down in price! UGH!
And while I'm at it... what is everyone paying for Southern States Legends Performance? I think I'm paying $18.00 now. Makes me crazy.

I think a 50# bag of flax seed here is running around $55. I was buying it by the 10# bag for $10, but last time I went to the store it was up to $14. After what I have is used, I'll be getting the 50# bag. Better start saving now!

Beet pulp in TS is 13.99. At the feed store it is about 15.50 -- up from 8.50 in the last 6-8 months (maybe a bit longer). There have been spotty shortages... not sure why.

6 months ago ground flax was 10 cents per pound, it is now roughly 15.00 for 10 pounds. I've stopped buying it.

Southern States Legends Perform is $15.50 a bag. TC Growth and Low Starch, 16.50.

I don't even want to think about hay prices.

I can get both kinds of beet pulp now, but from 2 different feed stores. It was almost $17 last week, used to be $9. The complete pellet I mix with it is $9 and I'm thinking I need to adjust to feed more pellets, less pulp due to the increase.

I looked for flax seed it was between $18-55 a bag. The problem EVERY store was out. I had a family member buy the last bag from a store in another state and bring it to Thanksgiving!

Well, the flax seed, hay and beet pulp that's for sale now was produced with $4.50 per gallon diesel fuel and $650 per ton fertilizer. I strongly suspect that supplies of those products are low because most farmers thought "Now, nobody is going to pay what I'd have to get for this crop with the high cost of inputs."
Then the farmers planted less, or tried an alternate crop. It's hard to find hay around here. Why? Because the big hay producers didn't fertilize, thinking (correctly) that they wouldn't make a profit by putting expensive fertilizer out.

Maybe next year gas, diesel fuel and fertilizer prices will be back to some reasonable levels and the cost of farm products will go down accordingly.

well. Sask Potash Corp has projected about half last year's cost of fertiliser, so that will go a long ways to help....and some are predicting the price will drop by 2/3. I'll believe either when I see it.

We quit flax two years ago, simply because the input costs outweighed the returns - flax is expensive to grow, needs 'stuff' to prevent a disease that I cannot remember the name of, and that stuff is pricey and it trebled in price, so no more flax until the chemical companies grab a brain. I never looked for flax seed, can just bum a 5 gallon pailful from someone - just the bottom bit from the truck will do but i will pay market price for a bushel if I have to. Beet pulp is around 12.00 for almost 60 pounds.

I feed BP pellets hydrated with garlic and applecider vinegar. I add 1/3 cup flax seeds to hydrate with that. I recently paid just under $13/bag 50# BP without molasses pellets. The flax has been just under $58 for 50# bag.
I left out the flax seeds for a month and 1/2 and found my two foundered
horses who foundered in 2005 could hardly move. Literally. I had been told
flax was antiinflammatory and this really proved it. As soon as I added it back into hydrate with the BP, in a weeks' time they were moving much better and by the end of 2 wks they were back to normal again. So....leaving
it out is not an option for them. I also have 2 31yr olds that I know benefit
from it. I found that 2/3c was actually too much, their poop turned red.
I found 1/3 cup per horse is plenty to do the job. I also add stabilized rice bran which offers 120 antioxidants to the mix. A person can also hydrate whole oats and or alflafa pellets if you have horses that need more.
But the main base is safe for all of them and a wonderful feed for year round.
You can email me or visit my site for the receipe.

Is the inverted calcium/phosphorus ratio not a worry to anyone who feeds feed store flax because you're feeding so little?

Beep without molasses:
$12.50 / 40 lbs several weeks ago.
$16.75 at a different store last week. :(

I've had a pretty hard time finding it w/o molasses.

We are paying $18.99 for BP....up from $9.99 this time last year. It is damn near impossible to get without molasses this year here as well. We use several of Horsetech's products which have a flax base so we don't use flax other than what's already in the supplements.

Just an FYI:

Ask your distributor to order a pallet for YOU when he places his store order. That way, you can get the entire pallet and a bit off the price for ordering in bulk.

I was at TS today and plain shreds were $15. Luckily I had previously purchased six months worth at $9.50 per bag. I won't need to buy any till April. Crimped oats were $15 and whole oats were $12.
