Is this why they're discussing cloning woolly mammoths? To make more of these:

You know, some people have claimed fleece-lined, open front boots makes a horse look like it had sheep strapped to its legs. But what about having Chewbacca strapped to your own legs?

Wow, what are those made out of?!? I would imagine that when they get wet they stink to high heaven!

I've seen something similar in a white curly type fleece...these look odd as hell though.
All I can think of is if a woman were wearing those someone is bound to comment, "Hey lady, time to wax!"

I can't help but think that even the stoutest hearted horse would either bolt in terror or attack and kill any rider approaching in that ensemble of items....

The chaps and "Oh-so-cute little furry boots" would last about two minutes in my house--after the cats smelled them and hissed at them ("You lookin' at me?"), the fur would literally FLY!:eek:

Hubby would probably start riding horses just so he could wear something like that.

Those have been around long before any of us were - they were worn by "gauchos" to get them thru tough winters in dealing with cattle. If you ever watch the Rose Bowl Parade when Scripps Miramar outfits their spotted Saddlebreds in rugged western attire (not the silver saddle parade outfits but the Old West outfits), you will see them worn as period costume attire. They definitely serve a purpose in keeping a cowboy warm, but I have to admit, they don't appeal to me much.

Dumb question, but how come the fuzzy part goes on the outside? With things like boots and coats, doesn't the wooly part go on the inside? And wouldn't that make it easier to keep them clean?

(I mean clearly, actual sheep are built furry part out, but is that by biological necessity or because it's the optimal design to maximize warmth?)

I would think if the fuzzy part was to the inside, they would itch pretty bad. Plus it probably provides better insulation if they're on the outside. Also as far as keeping them clean, I doubt the goucho's/cowboys of old were as interested in cleanliness as we are today .

All I can say about the woolly chaps is that they probably aren't made of "angora wool" - given that angora wool comes from angora BUNNIES... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Englishangora.jpg

There are Angora goats, but the wool they produce is mohair. I guess as long as you didn't process it too heavily, most any wool would probably be warm and with all the lanolin, pretty water resistant, but ugh, I've been around dry sheep and they don't smell particularly nice (unless they were cleaned up for a show or fair) - I don't want to think about the way wet sheep smell.

Angora chaps.....lovely old beasts and you can actually buy new ones too, starting at the paltry sum of 1100.00 and going up. Hair is on the outside to shed water/snow - they were mostly a northern plains thing, and there were more than a few pairs up my way. Underneath they wore red woolies (heavy woolen one piece underwear) and lined wool pants - jeans were not the outfit of the west despite what the movies say. The old timers said you would freeze in jeans, and they are right, jeans at 30 below is danged cold, lined wool pants with long johns is much better....and now the wool pants have been replaced by polar fleece :)

As silly as they look, they are super warm and having ride in the colder western parts of the US or use horses on long fall hunting trips they would be great.

About those fake leopard skin boots: some transvestite Diva somewhere is soooo unhappy they only come in a size six!

Those are the nastiest looking wooly chaps I've ever seen. Much prefer the look of the white angora ones. I think my cousin the rancher had a pair many, many, MANY years ago.

(I mean clearly, actual sheep are built furry part out, but is that by biological necessity or because it's the optimal design to maximize warmth?)

I think it's for both reasons. If they were built furry part in, the furry-ness would get moist and lose its insulating properties.

It appears that they call them "angora" when they are made from angora goat skin. Mohair is probably what is made of the sheared fibers.

I was thinking they meant "alpaca" because they look a lot more like llama hair than goat hair, but I guess not ;)

I must say, wooly chaps look a whole lot better with a cowboy in 'em!!!

Used to see a lot of them in old pictures in The Western Horseman, back when that was a real magazine.

Man. If my cats peed on my ribbons, just THINK of what they would do if I left those lying around!

And really, I spend enough time shaving my legs as it is.... strapping those on would be like me saying "Ha HA! I am embracing my inner angry feminist! Who not only does not shave her legs, but ADDS MORE HAIR on top of what she already has because she is not yet manly enough!"

Bluedejavu got it - they're really not all that uncommon, at least in a historical sense, but maybe I only say that because I'm from Texas and have seen about a billion pairs at ever cowboy museum I've ever been to. :D They're called "woolies," FYI.

For some reason, this made me burst out laughing.

But I thought wool kept you warm when it's wet?? That's why I wear wool socks in the winter, so if my feet get wet, they still be (fairly) warm...I live in the North Pole--um, Wisconsin, after all!

uh....I kinda like these ;-). But then, I have no restraint or, apparently, taste, when it comes to leopard print. Fortunately, I can't wear heels anymore with my back, and they're the wrong size...
