Question 1: Does anyone feed Maalox tabs? Right now I'm feeding 2oz liquid Maalox twice a day. But I'm thinking it would be easier for the barn staff to just toss in some tablets instead.

Question 2: If so, how many tablets do you feed at a time?

Question 3: What's the best place to buy Maalox in bulk?

I can't answer your question directly, but your question made me wonder -- why Maalox instead of an equine antacid that is designed (and priced) to be fed in horse-sized quantities?

Umm ... good question. For me, it's a combination of not being able to afford GastroGuard (even the maintenance dose would be $10/day), and Maalox working. I've tried the Natural Stomach Soother, but that seemed to make Harry ill, so I stopped that.

I'd take a look at UGard, if you're happy with Maalox. It comes in a powder, pellet and liquid and has similar ingredients to Maalox.

We use both liquid and tablet form of Maalox. We usually use 60 cc's of liquid and anywhere from 5-8 tablets. I know BJ's or Sams Club has the bulk size of Maalox. But sometimes it's hit or miss around me. UGH!

My 24 yr old Arab is on Pro CMC now and so far so good with him (knock on wood). He's a colic prone horse so this seems to be working well.

I agree w/ the other poster....i would give something like Corta Flx U Guard pellets which is designed specifically for horses and works great-its completely turned around the ulcers on my ottb.

Two thumbs up for Corta Flx Uguard! affordable as compared to some of the other ulcer supplements and comes in powder, pellets,or liquid and even the pickiest of horses seem to eat it.

To the folks suggesting u-guard, I have a question. I've heard antacids actually make the horse's stomach produce MORE acid long-term. Does anyone know anything about this?

My vet suggested 90cc's of generic liquid antacid from Walmart. My filly LOVES the mint flavored! It's candy to her and I just pour it on her grain. She licks & slurps. :D Cheapest for me!
LONG term use of any antacids or anti-acid meds (you do know the difference right?) can interfere with digestions as stomach acids are normal and necessary for digestion.
Antacids are calcium or magnessium or aluminum based liquids/tabs that NEUTRALIZE the existing acids. Most are harmless due to short action times.
Anti-acid meds PREVENT the secretion of acids into the stomach. Bigger deal effects and longer effect times. Hence these are used for curing active ulcers. Omeprazole/Ranitidine/Cimetidine are ANTI-acids.
