I know there are sprays on the market to keep deer or rabbits, etc away from your garden etc.
Does anyone know of a spray that you could spray on maybe even the ground to keep a horse out of a "zone"????
Situation is: I have my horses in electric fence with wire on our side. 3 other horse's pasture boarders ours and they have gotten in the habit of reaching over nipping and squealing. I actually tried to use a shock collar on my horse to keep AWAY AWAY, but it's hard to catch them in the act.
I thought if I could spray something like a liquid fence type product on both side of the fence to increase the boarder so they can't reach each other.
HELP.

I don't know of any such product for horses & I think the products for dogs, deer, etc. barely work (from what I've read) or don't work at all.
The answer is TWO fences, 12 - 20 feet apart. We pretty much never allow shared fencelines. Another way would be a much taller electric fence with 4 - 6 strands separating the horses. I would guess that 5 ft. tall with 6 "tapes" or "ropes" or "strands" separating the pastures would reduce the reaching & squealing. If the fence is well ground & very "hot" the horses will hesitate to get close.

I agree with Evalee--even one or two strands of tape on step in posts 10' in from your fenceline will solve the problem.

The deer spray (blood-based) worked fairly well on my horses for a period of a day or two--I was trying to keep them away from a squishy spot in the pasture where a big truck had gotten stuck. They then became inured to the smell after that and no matter how often I reapplied it they ignored it. A visual/electric barrier is so much better. Especially when you are trying to overcome the very powerful instinct for horses to socialize.

Believe me if it was my farm they WOULD NOT share a fence line!!
But unfortunately I can't make any modifications other than what I have by putting hot wire on my side.
Hence the reason I was looking for something that maybe could be used as a deterent. ugh, it is so frustrating to watch them do that crap over the fence.

I know someone mentioned deer spray with blood in it. But what about actual dried blood. I think I used to by it by the 5 - 10 lb sack for my roses way back when. Maybe liberally dribble that around and see what happens?

Plastic step-in posts and one or two hot-wires, placed several feet back from the fenceline. It's cheap and portable.
THROW AWAY the shock collar.

As I said before, I CANNOT add or alter anything (other than the added hot wire on my side) at this farm.
Shock collar actually is great! Obviously when used correctly;)
I guess I pour some blood as a invisible fence!!! should be fun:sadsmile:

Why can't you pull the hotwire back a few feet? Would be far better than one of the horses getting hurt or the main fence getting broken.

Because I DO NOT OWN THIS PROPERTY. It is on the National Historical Registry and NO modifications.
Believe me, if it was that easy I wouldn't have to ask for help on a forum!!!

Hmmmm. Very interesting. A property on the National Historic Register is allowed to have an electric fence (not historically accurate) but the fence cannot be moved? Or have a second fence behind the first?

BECAUSE it is NOT my FARM.
They do not like things that are visually distracting or unappealing, such as another line of wire several feet from the split rail fence. The electric wire we have now is not visable if you just walk up.
AND Because the owner of the farm does not see them "play fighting " over the fence as a problem..."it's cute". Believe me, I've gone there...
So I was just attempting to find an "invisible" remedy to prevent me from going bonkers!!!!

Really has nothing to do with historical accuracy, but asthetics. A line of electric fence a couple of feet from the split rail would not be "attractive" The electric fence I have on our side is hidden by the split rail fence.
Besides farm owner does not see a problem with the "play fighting" over the fence..."it's cute"

Okay, no need to get worked up. Just trying to figure out what you're dealing with.
I've seen posts which come out at an angle from the main fence to hold the wire. Would that work for you?
They're kinda like this l-* so the wire is a set distance away from the main fence. You could put it behind the split rail so it wouldn't be seen.
