I'm a middle-aged, "fluffy", beginner rider, and am also rather wimpy. We've had our gelding for a couple of years now...he started out more as my daughter's children's hunter, but put up with me learning on him. Back in February, he'd had a leg injury, and we weren't sure if he was going to be sound again, or would become a pasture ornament. He wound up coming all the way back, and last month was given a clean bill of health and we were told he could start jumping again. My daughter has been working with him, and I've resumed taking lessons. And today, I jumped for the first time! Granted, it was only crossrails, but it was real jumps!! Now I'm motivated!! I will lose enough weight to wear tan breeches in public and show this spring!! I actually scheduled another lesson for tomorrow because I want to jump again...it's really fun! :D:D

Oh, you finally let the genie out of the bottle there!
Jumping it is for you!
Remember, since a horse really should only be jumped so much, if you take lessons on other horses, you will get to jump even more, as you can then also practice on your horse and double your jumping pleasure.;)
Jumping is so much fun, for both, horses and riders.:p

Glad you're having fun. That's what riding is all about. If you can't smile, you aren't doing the for fun thing.

Congrats!!! Jumping is so much fun! To spare your own horse, take actual jumping lessons on other horses, and practice ground poles on him--a ground pole is the same thing as a jump for practicing timing, finding a spot, all that good stuff. :)
Wait till you jump your first course! Nothing else like it, even if it's only one foot jumps!!!!!

Good for you! I reeeeeaaaaallly miss jumping. As soon as my horse is old enough, we're going to go back to it. There's is nothing like the thrill of it. Well maybe racing a Lamborghini at top speed, but I unfortunately I don't own one. I so miss it, I even dream about it!
Congrats!

Thanks, all! It really was thrilling for me...I wasn't sure I'd ever have enough nerve to actually jump, but now that I've done it, I want to keep it up! I was quite apprehensive, as he has a big jump, but I think he understands it's the old mom who can't ride, so he takes it easy on me.
Here's a couple of pictures of him with his previous owner, who showed him in the A/O's...I have a looonnnggg ways to go!

I have a little story to share. Back in the dark ages of the '60s & 70s when I was first learning how to ride, I rode for years before learning how to jump. I was pretty much horse-obsessed and hooked anyway, but my sister, who took lessons with me, liked to ride, but wasn't as horse-obsessed as I was. Anyway, so we were on our way to our regular Saturday morning lesson one day when my sister announced that after today, she was going to give up on riding. I guess she was bored or something. Anyway, wouldn't you know it but, that was the very day that we were introduced to jumping! On the way home from the lesson we were in the car and my sister said, "about what I said earlied about giving up on riding? Well ... nevermind." LOL. Cracks me up to this day.

Jumping is a rush! Have fun. Like Quinn said, you can do anything you put your mind to, especially with such a lovely horse.

He is a lovely guy, isn't he (yep, proud mama!). We've been through some tough times with him over the past year, and I was really starting to wonder if I'd made a mistake in buying rather than leasing...but it's all coming together now...knock on wood!
