I recently bought a new Tipperary safety vest and it's a little too long for me. Has anyone else had this problem? What did you do? Would it be OK to shorten the length in the back? Any advice is appreciated:)

We had a Tip vest basically rebuilt for me several years ago. It had been the boss' and I needed a better vest (my first vest was so uncomfortable and bulky, I didn't ride very well in it), but didn't have money to buy a brand new one. We took it to, of all people, our blanket lady, who was able to take it apart, remove a few cells of it here and there, and get it to fit me pretty well. It wasn't a perfect fit, but it worked and did its job well for a few years until I got a new one as a gift. The rebuilt one is still used as a spare. I think shortening them would be even easier than what mine went through, as we had to not only shorten it, but remove some from the shoulders and back. I think someone skilled in sewing and tailoring, especially someone who deals with heavier things, should be able to do it pretty well.

I am short, and most off the rack vests are too long for me. I custom ordered my Tipperary to be 2" shorter in the back, so I would assume that if Tipperary can do it, that it can be done. You could always check with them and see if they would do the alteration at a reasonable price.

I have shortened 2 of them. It's quite easy. I carefully cut a few of the stitches on the binding/trim at the bottom and removed the lower pieces of foam. Then I hand sewd the trim back on and just left the soft material at the original length. The vest still covers all of DDs back and the soft material doesn't interfer with anything. No one can tell that the vest has been altered. It took maybe 10 minutes.

My question back to you would be why are you riding in a vest that is not safety rated and especially so for eventing?

My DD's vets was purchased in the UK and is BETA tested. It "looks" like a Tipp, but is not. In the UK you are required to wear a BETA tested vest, so we purchased one before she competed. This vest is a bit thicker and a bit stiffer that the Tipp, but it is segmented and much more flexible that the one piece vests.

The vest was a bit too long in the back and hit on her cantle and rode up around her ears. I reshaped it a bit. It still covers everything that the original design covered.

You can open the bottom hemm stitching, remove the foam pieces, sew the hemm back together ( sewing machine, $ 99 ), fold the empty pockets to the inseide of the vest and hand stitch them to the inside, simple. Takes 30 minutes even for a guy.
It does not, or should not, make any differance to the testing standard, because that standard is based on the thickness of the foam.

Thanks everyone:) I'm just not the most handy person when it comes to a sewing machine (or a needle and thread:D)! This sounds pretty easy though.
