I tried searching for another post but my skills aren't good enough

Going through my TBs record and for one race- one of the comments were "stopped"

Obviously something stopped! :D but what factors/reasoning would be to stop him?

Just tearing his racing record apart to understand how he was on the track...

Thanks

I usually read that as shorthand for "ran out of significant forward momentum" or the horse was asked to run too soon and had nothing left for the stretch. Nothing really noteworthly like "pulled up" would have been.

"Stopped" means just that, he stopped trying... i.e. was running along and he just slowed down (for usually no real reason except that he was tired of running... usually they slow pretty quickly too, hence the term stopped)

Probably the most common is respiratory stuff- bleeding or something impeding their normal breathing.

Sometimes injury, or sometimes a horse who gets pissed or has a bad track trip (gets caught up behind horses and checked, etc)- sometimes if they're checked they don't really get going again once the way clears. And of course, sometimes they just don't care and stop trying.

Good to know- thanks. I was thinking something like pulled up but good to know it wasn't along those lines.

How about:

"brief foot, in tight"
"empty 8 wide"
"failed to respond"
"jostle pinch back strt"

How about:
"failed to respond"

Somewhat exactly as stated: the jockey asked for go - cracked the whip typically - and the horse wasn't phased. No response when asked.

How about:
"jostle pinch back strt"

Happens often - at the start the field breaks from the gate and goes collectively towards the rail. Most horses don't like being overly bumped/jostled which is made worse by the pinching of horses from the right pushing towards the left where the rail is. So a horse gets squeezed and unless they hold position they'll fall back.

Brief Foot in tight usually occurs in sprint races when the inside horse shows speed then gets impeded heading into the turn by the horse in the 2 path.

8 Wide Empty basically means the horse showed very little and raced in the middle of the racetrack. In other words, the jockey was probably just worried about getting his $50.

[QUOTE=firstimpressioncounts;3664662]Good to know- thanks. I was thinking something like pulled up but good to know it wasn't along those lines.

How about:

What you are looking at is called a trouble tine. Sort of where someone takes note of the trip the horse had throughout the running of a race.

"brief foot, in tight"
Showed a little speed but not enough to clear and was crowded. So likely ran some was squeezed and quit running/trying

"empty 8 wide"
Had a very wide trip. On the rail would be the one path so 8 wide is 8 off the inside fence. Has a whole lot more ground to cover than a horse on the rail and had no run in him as a result

"failed to respond"
Didn't do much when asked to get down to running.

"jostle pinch back strt"

Was jostled or pinched when coming out of the gate. Horses on either side might have come in his direction

Stopped means a one other poster said that the horse didn't carry on with enthusiasm.

Sometimes we'll see,
Clipped heels
off slow
lame, vanned
pulled up, walked off
broke down
bled
rank
bumped at start
lacked room
eased
failed to menace
weakened
etc
It's some one's (chart caller) interpretation of how the horse ran

Thanks everyone!

Seems he had a couple of '#' wides so wanted to understand what it mean...

There's a lot of comments, some make sense, some I had no clue (93 starts so there's a bit of reading and figuring out there for me )

That's a lot of starts! How old was he when he finished?

Sounds like a hard knocking guy, those are my favorite kind :)

Gustoruckus is his reg name.

He's 93 model. Started racing in 1995 and retired in 2002.

Of course, his last two years of racing he did 9 races (7 in 2001, 2 in 2002)- did not place in the top three at all. I'm guessing either he got hurt (there's obvious pinfiring scars on his leg) or just plain got fed up. (there's a few "tired" in the comments)

I had no idea who he was when I bought him nor did the girl before me (we didn't buy him directly off the track- he had about two owners before her and I). I thought just a few years (like two or three) of racing and that was it... I totally did not expect a very thick evelope from the thoroughbred racing protective brueau!

I admit- I was horrified to see I had a horse that raced as long as he did but doesn't bother me at all... :)

The most unusual comment I ever encountered on a chart was "impeded by umbrella at 1/16"

This (http://www.wktv.com/2tube/3445211.html)was why.

Lots of starts and 7 years of racing generally means sound to me unless he retired due to injury. As someone else said, a hard knocker. Pinfiring was probably from bucked shins as a 2-3 year old. That's not unusual, nor an unusual treatment for them back that far. As far as things that could indicate, an injury usually isn't my first guess. I bet he's a wonderful boy. What are his earnings? You should update Pedigree Query with what the TRPB sent you :)

Broke Slowly, impeded by patron 1/8, ran for purse money only

I still wish Artax would have ran over him.

That guy totally deserved to be run over.
Wasn't there a race somewhere where there was a "deer" incident?

:eek::eek:

Okay- that is CRAZY. (the umbrella comments, the crazy fan and I guess a deer accident???)

jengersnap- it wasn't about him being sound (obviously it was a sign he was well put together and was able to handle all the starts, etc.) but more of a mind mentality- I've ridden a lot of TBs and I find those that didn't race long or weren't successful on the track didn't have a lot of issues with being in a group, etc.

He does have one ankle slightly enlarged but sound on it so far

So far he's been good so I am quite pleased! Have had him for two and a half years- and he's with me til the day he dies (I think he deserves it after his years on the track)

Will take the time to update his pedigree query this weekend- But his earnings are (as per equineline (I don't have the other report in front of me) $110, 617 US- 93 starts, 13 1st, 13 2nds, 17 3rds.)

Ack, don't say that! My TB is out for a few days and hubby offered to toss me up on our 9 year old stakeswinner this weekend as a sympathy gesture. He just raced 10 days ago, but since we turned him out with the gang for his winter off he's been following us both around like a puppy dog, saying "ride me, ride me"! I led him and his jockey over to the pony in the last race and she's always been head over heels about riding the old gentleman. I asked her about the speed he has though (he's VERY fast, runs 2F in .21 frequently) and she said don't worry, he can only go so far and he's smooth lol (gulp) ;)

Who's your old man? :)

No no- no issues with him at all compared to another TB I rode that raced a long time... my TB has a good mind and attiude... has that puppy dog following as well and has been wonderful.

His reg name is Gustoruckus.

I am not sure if he was "fast"- I am not good with the whole racing record analyzing at this point

We had an amazing ride last night- his canter is really improving (he's had a very relaxed lifestyle the last two years (ummm since I bought him)- I did not ask much from him due to the lack of facilities where I was at before- we're at an indoor now) (I didn't expect us to have an easy paced two years but maybe it was good for him).

His canter stride was the best last night- big rolling canter. Our corners still need work (he likes to do it square ), but he's coming along faster than I thought he would at the new farm. We lost two years together but we do have an amazing bond now :D

The key with him is to start off with a relaxed attitude- I give him his head and just let him set the pace (walking or trotting) for about 10-15 mins then I set the pace.... I've noticed that if I ask for too much right away- he's tense for the rest of the ride (and worries- he's a big worrier- but not as much as he used to)

I wouldn't trade him for anything in this world :D

Hope you have a good ride on your old man! (may I ask who he is?)

Video on Artax's attempted assult

As a post script on this insanity: In April 2000 Lee Chang Ferrell was handed a three-year suspended sentence and five years probation for his involvement in the incident. Further he was ordered to continue psychological counseling and enroll in a vocational skills program.

ESPN - "Puncher" (http://espn.go.com/horse/TripleCrown00/s/000517_Puncher.html)

[the family's lawyer] Heyman has acted as a spokesperson, painting the man who ran on the track not as a reckless, drunken idiot but as a troubled person who doesn't even remember the incident.

Heyman says Ferrell suffers from a "multitude of psychological disorders," some of which stem from his being abandoned at age 4 by his biological father in his native South Korea. He was placed in an orphanage and later adopted by a Maryland couple.

One of the conditions of his probation agreement is an assurance that he will never set foot again on any property owned by the Maryland Jockey Club.

The remarks by the MJC actually were rather big of them:

Though Ferrell is, of course, unwelcome at this year's Preakness, the Maryland Jockey Club wishes him well.

"Anybody who did something like this has to be a troubled individual," said Maryland Jockey Club COO Jim Mango. "There's no question about it. It couldn't have been that he was just drinking. We hope he lives a long life and never does something like that again."

Sure! But he's "Hubby's" horse, not mine! They have one of those special relationships. The ground was too frozen and choppy to ride him today :( but my mare is feeling better so I expect to trailer her out for a ride on the beach :)
