I am currently fostering a four year old female aussie/border collie for a group in Lexington, Kentucky called The Haven for Dogs. She is red and white in color and small in size - maybe 40 lbs. She is the sweetest dog and the best behaved dog inside and outside. She is 100% housebroken and quiet in the house. She is active outside and playful, but when she comes inside, you barely know she is around. She mostly curls up at your feet or goes to her bed.
Here is the only bad news...... Her only problems are getting along with other female dogs. She loves my male Aussie and plays with him a lot. She is not good with my two girls and has started a few tussles with them (my girls tend to be dominant dogs). She is good with cats unless they run, then she wants to chase them. We have never let her chase them, but her herding instinct really kicks in when she sees them run.
She knows sit, stay, down and off. She can shake hands and roll over. She knows to sit and wait at the door before she can go out. She knows to sit and wait or down/wait before she can start eating her food.
As I mentioned, she is very good with my adult male aussie. Our rescue group is overwhelmed right now - and we don't have room to return her and all fosters are full right now.
If someone would like to take a chance on Ruby, I would be willing to pay the adoption fee. She is spayed, and UTD on all shots and is current on heartworm medication. She is located in the Lexington Kentucky area.
Here are some pictures of her - they aren't very good, but I can take more if requested.

Can you get her a ride to Maryland? I am looking for a replacement for my shephard x who we had to put down 11/5. I put in an application at our local shelter, but the dog I wanted went to someone who got there first, so I am looking again. You can PM me if it will work. My other dog is a neutered male, so all she will have to contend with are the barn cats.

Charlieo -
I am not sure how to get her up to maryland - where in Maryland are you? We do have numerous dog transports going from Kentucky to the Northeast area - I am on a dog transport list that posts anything going through Kentucky.
Yes, she is a real cutie. She is laying by my feet curled up in a tiny ball while I type this.
I just love her and I love her personality with people. I have only seen problems with her and other female dogs. She has been fine with one of my female dogs up until the past month (we have had her for 8 months now) - and since then, we have had two tussles with her and one with my sister's female dog (who happens to be her littermate!).
I already have trouble with my two girls and one more dominant female in the house is way too stressful. Its been two years without a fight between my girls and I want to keep the tension to a minimum.
Anyone can PM me or post here.
It seems with the economy there are so many dogs being turned in. Our rescue mostly pulls from the surrounding humane societies and also takes owner surrenders. Ruby was with a family (with children) for 4 years and then they got a new puppy and gave her back to our rescue. They said they didnt have time for Ruby anymore with the new puppy......

That is downright awful. I guess they never saw adopting her as any kind of commitment to a living being. Financial hardship or illness is one thing, but getting a new dog and returning your old one?
Its too bad she doesn't get along with female dogs. My parents just had to put down their Weimeraner due to cancer, but their other dog is a girl who happens to be rather spoiled and prissy and would not take kindly to anyone bossing her around :)

I have been a long-time lurker, and finally joined so that I could inquire about this dog! A very close friend of mine has been looking for the right dog to add to their family. A few months ago, their beloved 17 yr old Jack Russell passed on. Shortly thereafter, the German Shorthair they rescued from being abandoned at a gas station for 2 weeks and had for a year was suddenly "reclaimed" by the horrid previous owners. They were heartbroken and have fostered and helped place several JRT puppies and dogs with hopes of finding the perfect match. So far...no such luck.:(
They have decided a border collie or aussie would best suit their lifestyle. (I have a BC that was a rescue and a corgi) They have 2 aged male dogs - one aussie and one border collie! They have 27 acres surrounded by 350 acres, with trails cut through all of it, 2 kids (7 and 4), 4 horses, 3 goats, 1 sheep, lord knows how many chickens (in a coop that is inaccessible to the dogs:winkgrin:) and room for one more with lifetime love & care.
I emailed her your post tonight, and she asked me to give you info about her. I really think this dog might be a great match for them. She really misses having a dog that is her shadow. She would be the only female. We are in Spring Hill, TN, just south of Nashville, so you are not too far. Please let me know if she is still available and you think she sounds like a good candidate.

OH, she is GORGEOUS! I am a sucker for herding dogs. If she got along with females, I'd take her in a heartbeat...my Krystal would love to have a friend to run around the acreage with....

BHS, as much as I would like to adopt Ruby, it seems that your friends (1) are much closer(2) would give her a great home. Hope it works, if not I'm here.

Charlio, did things not work out with Tito?

I did speak with the woman that runs the rescue here (that Ruby is associated with) and she would like to keep Ruby in the surrounding area. With so many dogs being turned in to shelters, we would not want to transport her somewhere and if it didnt work out - try to get her back to us. I dont want to have her "get lost" in the system and end up in one of the shelters ( or worse) out of state. I think she would be willing to let her go to Cinci or even Nashville, but she was hesitant about letting her go farther.
BHS - if your friend would like to contact me, PM me and I will give you the Haven's information. I would be happy to talk with anyone about her.
For a herding dog - she is really laid back and quiet in the house. No barking or high energy - mostly comes inside and "hangs out". Besides the recent issues with my females - she has been the EASIEST foster we have had!

didgery - Lori found a local family, (with young kids) and was to call me if it didn't work out. Since I haven't heard any more, I assume the locals are working out, and that's great for Tito. I can certainly understand wanting to keep the adoptees close. Better for the agency, the dog and the new family.

I PM'd you! My border collie is very laid back as well. She won't chase a ball or frisbee. Doesn't have the temperament for agility (unlike my corgi that I did it with), but is perfectly suited to be the BEST therapy dog. My youngest of 3 boys has special needs, and she has participated in his therapy sessions from the day we brought her home at 8 weeks. I have taken her into nursing homes before, and she is truly amazing. I wish I had the time to get her certified and do that. She would absolutely love it!
